There is so much more to religion than just politics, and unfortunately many Catholics focus so much on politics, they forget about the spirit. Prayer is also a powerful tool. And power corrupts - I wouldn't want power to corrupt teh church and I wouldn't want the church to compromise its values for the sake of power.
Yet I do wish to see more positive interaction between government and religion, rather than the presupposition that all people are areligious.

I'm Catholic, I think that Christians (and people of all religious backgrounds) should have a right to run for office, however I believe that everyone should have a right to freedom of religion, and I'm not sure if a Catholic state would provide that for Muslims, Jews, Protestants and others. I agree that a state needs to be founded on something other than the values of capitalism and indivitualism, but people of all religious backgrounds, atheists included, need to be able to run for office.

Europes technology levels plunged during the dark ages, don't know why they were renamed middle ages... The renaisance the enlgihtenment and the industrial revolution all came about as the catholic states were removed and people were allowed to think again. Now we are in the midst of the greatest technological build up in history as the catholic church loses more and more power

That was the main issue, the fact that they preserved the old knowledge gave them a literal monopoly on education which lasted for a long while until the universities started to pop up.
That, and while Europe languished, The Middle East and Asia did quite well.
