First time I've seen his performance (which is impressive) but what I remember was in Arizona when DCM & DCW did a combined thing at a Bowl game. Not a shred of humility and the guys running the bari rehearsal were just adding to it. It was a good example of learning to seperate the man from the musician.
I always thought the coolest thing about James was that he was actually a Trombone player! He use to only play baritone or euphonium for corps, as far as I know. A truly gifted musician to be sure! SUTA!!
If only baritone players would enjoy playing the horn the way he does. Every year although my higschool is always winning our baritone players feel that they are being punished when they get that spot.
I marched with James and Mike in PR and Grenadiers for like 10 years. I can tell you for a FACT, as I marched 89 PR, that he is playing a 2 valve G , Dynasty, BARITONE bugle. Pretty sure all the leads played baritones in 89. We DID have some euphoniums and they were WAY huge compared to the euphs used to today. The Dynasty Baritones are bigger than the Kings..always have been.
I love all the comments! Let me make this clear: James is playing MUSIC. There are so many elements in MUSIC that are far beyond valves, scores, horns and mouthpieces. If you listen to that and then check out what he is doing, you'll get it. MUSICIANS play MUSIC.
@badddnote This....so much is made about mouthpieces and other BS. When, if half that energy was wasted on playing and practicing through Arbans or Clarke you would be so far ahead. Tone and breath support AND LISTENING go MUCH farther than worrying about how deep a mouthpiece you need to have to mellow out your raucous tone quality because you aren't playing correctly.
@stutzand000 Negative....3 valved G bugles were not legal until the 1990 season. There's one place (I forget the time stamp) in this vid where the valve cluster is isolated against the white in the tunic...there are clearly only 2 valves.
Besides...a lot of us posting here marched in the era (I did) and know our stuff....you apparently do not.
Ok peeps. That horn he is playing was a standard 2 valve Dynasty silver baritone bugle. For the record Phantom did NOT march all euphoniums until recently. We HAD euphoniums in 89, I think 5-6...that's it.
He's still playing. In Florida last I heard. He went on to play for Disney and a bunch of groups in that part of the country. It seems like a happy ending.
I marched with him and as much as I hated him he was very good and at that time deserved to win. I know I'm going to hear all sorts of shit about 2 v. 3 valve but at that time that was it. Again, trip-quad tonguing aside. If only you had to understand what we dealt with dan you'd understand. him and his brother were a kissass bastard. let's hear it for regiment. oh, btw i miss you kylee!
Reading Youtube comments give me a headache. It's been said quite a few times here:
That's a 2 valve baritone in G. Call it what you want, but Dynasty, (the horn manufacturer) called it a BARITONE. They made a model they referred to as a EUPHONIUM which was a bit larger.
I played a horn exactly like this in the mid 90s. As far as the weight, it wasn't bad at all. 2 valve G baritones weigh about the same as the Bb baritones today. The 3 valve G horns were A LOT heavier.
Nope... That year SCV deserved to win... And 1 player doesn't prove anything. If the whole corp can do this than yes... But anyways phantom has been underrated for the last deacde. Espeacially 2003.

I got up to 7th in bari solo inn 89, playin Concert etude..i thought I played pretty good but when I heard Hosmer, dam! there is always someone better, unfortunately. congrats on your corps winning it all this year, I marched with the current director Rick!
great so see the whole performance. I was actually standing in front of you when you guys played your exit concert next to us, SCV in '89. that was one of the loudest brass lines I ever heard live in my life! For all you haters hating on this performance and critics alike, F#@#$ OFF! This guy was the man for his horn line and corps in 89. Lets see any of you bozos play CarnivalofVenice without a mistake, you freakin idiots.
G bugles of the era could not play 4 notes...C#, D, Eb, and Ab in or below the staff...which required a 3rd valve that far down. (all the horns were in the same key and clef...TECHNICALLY the same instrument) You could play Ab above the staff with the 1st valve and pushing the st valve slide all the way in (remember those?), but otherwise, you had to pick a key that minimized 3rd valve combos, especially for the low brass. GREAT job!
That's a common misconception. There are Baritones with four valves and also Euphoniums with four valves. The number of valves isn't what makes them seperate, it is the shape of the bell. (in other words, see stonepolis's comment)
that's not completely true, while bell can usually tell you the difference, most of the time the Euphonium tubing throughout the instrument will be larger, the tone however is what really matters
This guy is truly magnificent! He provides a perfect example of what the euphonium is supposed to sound like. Even though the instrument he is playing is called the baritone G bugle, its tone is dark and mellow, like the euphonium. This is due to its euphonium-like bore. (Two-thirds conical). True baritones are more crisp and bright because of their half conical, half cylindrical bore.
What? I am certainly not a Vanguard fan today, but he made a damn good decision to march where he did in 1989. I don't even care about 1st place, just what a badass show.
well first of all,i aint talking to you, second of all, this guy marched phantom not vanguard in 1989.douche!so get ur shit str8 before you criticize nigga!
Why the fuck would you tell someone, "Wow, you're good! You should march with a different corps!"
That's a good way to get your ass whooped. Most people would never give up their corps experience for a few spots in final, you fuckin douche. After performing with over 100 other people for thousands of fans, as you're marching off the field surrounded by your corps mates, you realize that it's not about the scores.
ok well thats a cute pathetic story but honestly i dont give three flying fucks.ur an idiot and i wasnt mentioning it to you IMBECIL! IDIOTA! CARA DE CULO! hahaha.ur an idiot and sorry i didnt mean to hurt ur boyfriend's feelings. hahaha ur pathetic. and its funny cuz i bet ur gonna feel offended by this message and ur gonna reply with some dumb shit cursing me out.but i dont give a fuck cuz ur not man enough to say it in front of me..lol anyways, lets see if ur pussy enough to write back.

he is cheating with his tone and range... he puffs his cheeks and has somewhat bad technique
ChaosCasey 3 years ago
Who says what is good and what is bad technique if it sounds like sex?
WoWarrior08 3 years ago

there are also baritones with four valves ;)
UserID20 3 years ago
They are called Euphoniums
beak1972 3 years ago
That's a common misconception. There are Baritones with four valves and also Euphoniums with four valves. The number of valves isn't what makes them seperate, it is the shape of the bell. (in other words, see stonepolis's comment)
UserID20 3 years ago
Aye User i know. I play both...=) Sorry for the mix up, i had not slept much the last few days. I should have been more specific. My apologies.
beak1972 3 years ago
an there are also baritones/euphoniums with 5 or 6 valves
marktremontirules1 3 years ago
Now this is news to me. Can you give me way to look at them, PLEASE. That must be an interesting sound.
beak1972 3 years ago
one of my friends who amrched at sugarbowl with me owns a 5 valve, and my GT band teacher played a 6 valve
marktremontirules1 3 years ago
that's not completely true, while bell can usually tell you the difference, most of the time the Euphonium tubing throughout the instrument will be larger, the tone however is what really matters
americanforkbari 3 years ago
youre forgeting the bore difference.
adamscorpionman210 3 years ago
thats fucking awesome.
Jeromeybush 3 years ago
This guy is truly magnificent! He provides a perfect example of what the euphonium is supposed to sound like. Even though the instrument he is playing is called the baritone G bugle, its tone is dark and mellow, like the euphonium. This is due to its euphonium-like bore. (Two-thirds conical). True baritones are more crisp and bright because of their half conical, half cylindrical bore.
euphobari 3 years ago
yes, it is true that phantom has always marched euphoniums exclusively. the term "baritone" here refers to the pitch of the bugle.

Yeah. I play that in my high school marching band, and I can say that compared to him I suck royally.
bigkevi1992 3 years ago
That is the most beautiful sound I have ever heard come out of a euphonium.

Richard102106 3 years ago
Why the fuck would you tell someone, "Wow, you're good! You should march with a different corps!"
That's a good way to get your ass whooped. Most people would never give up their corps experience for a few spots in final, you fuckin douche. After performing with over 100 other people for thousands of fans, as you're marching off the field surrounded by your corps mates, you realize that it's not about the scores.
