I used to always watch these in fast motion but I always thought that when u grab the gun ur hand wud mess up badly when he inevitably fires. Then u wud be screaming in pain and then beaten up. And now I know that u push back the hammer, I doubt that in the in real speed I would be able to successfully comfortably push back a small piece of metal.

this one only looks cool, but is not very usefull.
When its a two handed grab on the weapon its done similar but the right hand would go between the hands holding the gun as the left hand is on the gun (think a karate x-block position). Then the right hand pulls back and downward on the wrists and the left hand applies the twisting force away from you striping the gun out of their hands.

The same types of disarms with a few variations are used by the Isreal commando's and for sure they have to make sure it works especially since they have to fight so much.
@Mider999 u're forgetting one very important detail, most muggers don't just point their guns foward like that, they keep them at waist level, concealed, the way that gunman was holding his gun would call too much attention.
when the arm is folded and the gun is held near your waist, is near imposible to put this to use.
besides during the entire technique you're assuming that your foe would not use his other hand, or his feet, wich is the type of mistake that can cost your life

Anyway if i was in L.A. learning martial arts I would probably wanna train with someone like Paul Vunak or Dan Inosanto they were in the army i believe. Vunak still teaches the Navy Seals doesnt he? There's students of Dennis Hanover there also they teach Krav Maga. Its better to just give your cash up the disarm is the last resort. You can find better disarms in Krav Maga that were thought up for the army

He said that today martial arts are good for hand to hand if there proper arts but you dont need to learn how to defend against a spear or arrow you gotta learn how to defend against a freaking gun or baseball bat. @Shakduhn There's alot more to self defense then just hurting your opponent. If you hear from guys like Marc Macyoung he'll tell you that the scenario may be a psycho hiding iwth a shotgun. There are ways to avoid the fight. Like someone who's arguing with someone else is basically perhaps asking to get hurt especially if there smaller. There has to be some psychology in self defense and alot of teaches wont teach you that.

trained combatants are taugth to keep their cool during combat, but most untrained attackers will often panic when their victim tries to disarm them and WILL shoot the moment you make a sudden move.
if they open fire while your hand is on the slide, it doesn't matter if you redirect the weapon in another direction, you WILL recieve heavy lacerations on your hand

You cannot grab an auto pistol with your hand! The slide moves too fast, too much pressure, heat, and the perp will be pulling the weapon striaght back at the time. They will discharge the waepon out of pure shock. This techinque would only work on a revovler. As martial artists, we owe it to our students to practice these techniques with paintball or airsoft type guns. It might work in the dojo, but does it work at full speed with semi-live guns?
apparently u can because ive seen it done, the gun will fire only one time and after that the force of your grip will usually be more then enough to jam the gun redering it damn near harmless
Assuming that you have removed your vital targets from their line of fire, grabbing the slide will most likely result in you having a cut up hand, and them having a gun that is jammed. Not a great trade, but it does beat getting shot.
That said, I have to agree completely with the use of airsoft guns in training.
Whatever you have to use to preserve your life is important to use instead of being killed by a gun man. But the only thing you have to be able to demonstrate is courageousness for doing that kind of technique..
I think that grabbing with the right hand telegraphs the defense in an impractical way. an assailant would see the defense and pull the trigger before you can get yourself off the line of fire. better to slide left and block/grab the gun with the left hand and employ the technique which looks similar to Kotegaeshi in Aikido. that way you're always offline, and the gun is pointing either toward the sky or back in their face. this looks like a very problematic technique in a practical scenario
funny how in mma, this move won't work, and not to mention REAL gun owners even criminals, hold the gun with two hand and usually don't have a gun three inches from your face, even then, it's a 50/50. this could get people killed. carry mace, take him down, spray a load down his throat and fucking RUN morons! Geez....
Tossing the gun is a pretty good option unless you are very familiar with the particular weapon in question. Different guns have different safeties and it takes time to figure a new one out. Also. this type of disarm often leads to jammed weapons (and cut up fingers) and clearing a jam takes time. It is generally a bad idea to take time out of a fight when you have the upper hand.
Using the near hand (left) seems like a more likely entrance. You could get the same effect. I don't think I'd want to bother going for the hammer or the gun when moving the wrist will change the aim even more, with less chance of getting hit with a cycling slide. There are several guns on the market now that have no exposed hammer. As for running, it may not always be an option. If the attacker is more interested in raping your wife or killing you, what are you gonna do?

i completely agree. i am a martial artist who has practiced gun defense. when i was held up at gunpoint i had to make desicion...i can try to disarm this guy or just give him the 14 dollars in my pocket...i decided the $150 a month tuition was not worth my life and gave him the cash. even the most trained martial artist will shit their pants when it comes to it.
The bigger problem is that people are learning the technique, they should be learning the SKILL. Eg. The technique is disarming the gun but the skill is reacting to the situation. Bruce Lee talks about how many people want to learn the technique but technique without skill is useless. In krav maga they put u under that sort of pressure and fear. This skill vs technique dilemma applies to all learned things. In magic people wanna learn the trick but they dont have the skill ete etc
Because people DO try to shoot you. We live in a world where, when kids get pissed, you have them bringing guns to school and shooting people. In real life, people don't always want to shoot first if they can't get what they want right away. This is a general rule and doesn't apply to everyone, but its true.
Also, some people CAN move faster than the person can respond to shoot. Wouldn't you rather know that you have a defense against that situation than knowing that you don't?

This is to complicated to pull off under stress. People dont seem to factor in the fear factor. In times like this fine motor functions fail you. Easier to go with something simpler and less wasted movement. Way to much motion. It's pretty and complicated but those things get you killed in tense situations. All this is is a Hollywood technique: flashy but not practical.
At that range? Sure there is. Try it yourself with a airgun/softgun or something. You would be amazed how easy it is. The real problem comes after you have gotten out of the line of fire. But still. A knife is way more dangerous at that range than a gun is. Anyway, nobody who knows what they're doing would hold their gun so close to you.
When facing somebody who is committed to shooting and isnt mentally retarded, you need to have lightning quick reflexes or catch them off guard to have a chance at not getting shot.
On the subject of knifes, cutting somebody can be quite difficult. It takes a decent amount of force to penetrate somebody and cause damage (Depending on what type of clothing you are wearing and what type of knife the attacker is using). Not everybody is trained on how to effectively use a knife either.
Cutting somebody can indeed be difficult, that's why people stabbs. Stabbs do a lot more damage than cuts. You should also know that people who gets stabbed/cut with on the streets don't understand what have happened before they see all the blood. anybody understands that if a guy wears a thick leather jacket, you stabb the thigh or gut the neck. Both knife and gun defence require very fast reflexes. No doubt about that. But a gun is more visible than a knife is. Unless you're Rambo. I'm Rambo=)

If they point a gun at you means they don't want to shoot you. If they wanted to shoot you they would have done it already. The pointing means they hesitate, and means you have a chance and the ball is in your court.

Just saying: a 10% chance of success is better than resigning yourself to die; also that when someone points a gun and doesn't shoot right away, it means it is time for you to make a decision on what to do next.

i guess if there was something going on and the BG would be distracted, it is a good technique. Your point makes sense but usually a BG wouldnt attempt to rob you at gun point when there are other people or things around. Your best defense is pretend to reach for your wallet and draw your CCW and put 2 in his gut and run.
That's great if the guy is right on top of you and you're physically fit and fast. I still think the best defense is having a gun. If you are being mugged, turn your strong side away from the attacker to block his view and reach back as if to get your wallet. Hold your weak hand up and out in front of you as a distraction. Instead of handing over the wallet, you draw your gun and put a few in his chest.
OK THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO IN THIS SITUATION IS GET WRIST CONTROL..THIS GUY IS A MUGGER AND HE WANTS YOUR MONEY TO BUY CRACK.. GET WRIST CONTROL THEN... PULL OUT YOUR GUN...HE IS SCARED NOW...HE IS SCARED THAT YOUR GOING TO SHOOT HIM IN THE HEAD end of scenario
I hate "false" defense vids... a simple turn of the body, a step forward, ANYTHING besides standing still would screw up this move (let alone the "attacker" was offering no resistance and the thumb is too weak to keep the hammer down)
No one will get that close to you with a gun? Actually a lot of armed robbers get that close so that it would be easier to shoot the person if the person decides to run away.
This is just one of several ways to disarm someone with a gun. Obviously if the person with the gun is far away this won't work nor if the gun doesn't have an external hammer will this work. Nor if the person has an oozie. This technique is specifically geared to disarm that particular gun if the gunman is close distance to you.
This would not work with a Glock pistol because it has an internal hammer.Martial arts is highly over rated and only the truely best can stand up against an armed attacker but if the gun is a glock or they are too far of reach they are helpless.A knife or baseball bat is more realistic and easier to disarm than a gun but I would rather shoot back instead of risking it big time trying to disarm a thug with fancy martial arts moves.
You'll get someone killed teaching this technique. Moving off line without changing the distance is a big problem. With a finger on the trigger, the attacker has only to follow your movement and shoot. Grabbing the gun is extremely risky. Also, if a shot goes off you'll get burned grabbing it that way.

The technique takes long and is risky. You could get your head blown off if he moves the gun with you.

Tossing the gun is a pretty good option unless you are very familiar with the particular weapon in question. Different guns have different safeties and it takes time to figure a new one out. Also. this type of disarm often leads to jammed weapons (and cut up fingers) and clearing a jam takes time. It is generally a bad idea to take time out of a fight when you have the upper hand.

Using the near hand (left) seems like a more likely entrance. You could get the same effect. I don't think I'd want to bother going for the hammer or the gun when moving the wrist will change the aim even more, with less chance of getting hit with a cycling slide. There are several guns on the market now that have no exposed hammer. As for running, it may not always be an option. If the attacker is more interested in raping your wife or killing you, what are you gonna do?

i completely agree. i am a martial artist who has practiced gun defense. when i was held up at gunpoint i had to make desicion...i can try to disarm this guy or just give him the 14 dollars in my pocket...i decided the $150 a month tuition was not worth my life and gave him the cash. even the most trained martial artist will shit their pants when it comes to it.

The bigger problem is that people are learning the technique, they should be learning the SKILL. Eg. The technique is disarming the gun but the skill is reacting to the situation. Bruce Lee talks about how many people want to learn the technique but technique without skill is useless. In krav maga they put u under that sort of pressure and fear. This skill vs technique dilemma applies to all learned things. In magic people wanna learn the trick but they dont have the skill ete etc

Because people DO try to shoot you. We live in a world where, when kids get pissed, you have them bringing guns to school and shooting people. In real life, people don't always want to shoot first if they can't get what they want right away. This is a general rule and doesn't apply to everyone, but its true.
Also, some people CAN move faster than the person can respond to shoot. Wouldn't you rather know that you have a defense against that situation than knowing that you don't?

these techniques r just for specific conditions for someone who has no alternate choice, e.g. a policeman against an armed criminal.

This is to complicated to pull off under stress. People dont seem to factor in the fear factor. In times like this fine motor functions fail you. Easier to go with something simpler and less wasted movement. Way to much motion. It's pretty and complicated but those things get you killed in tense situations. All this is is a Hollywood technique: flashy but not practical.

At that range? Sure there is. Try it yourself with a airgun/softgun or something. You would be amazed how easy it is. The real problem comes after you have gotten out of the line of fire. But still. A knife is way more dangerous at that range than a gun is. Anyway, nobody who knows what they're doing would hold their gun so close to you.

When facing somebody who is committed to shooting and isnt mentally retarded, you need to have lightning quick reflexes or catch them off guard to have a chance at not getting shot.
On the subject of knifes, cutting somebody can be quite difficult. It takes a decent amount of force to penetrate somebody and cause damage (Depending on what type of clothing you are wearing and what type of knife the attacker is using). Not everybody is trained on how to effectively use a knife either.

Cutting somebody can indeed be difficult, that's why people stabbs. Stabbs do a lot more damage than cuts. You should also know that people who gets stabbed/cut with on the streets don't understand what have happened before they see all the blood. anybody understands that if a guy wears a thick leather jacket, you stabb the thigh or gut the neck. Both knife and gun defence require very fast reflexes. No doubt about that. But a gun is more visible than a knife is. Unless you're Rambo. I'm Rambo=)

Trying to avoid a murder charge if you don't resist doesn't mean they won't risk a murder charge if you do.
And their trigger fingers can move a lot faster than anything you can move.
The guys with the guns in these vids are allowing themselves be taken down, not trying to pull the triggers.
And anyway, if you think they don't want to shoot you, why do something that might change their minds?

Of course. Like I said in my first sentence, attempting the grab the gun is pretty far down the list. You give up your wallet, you run, you negotiate, you beg, then MAYBE think about grabbing it. Just saying: a 10% chance of success is better than resigning yourself to die; also that when someone points a gun and doesn't shoot right away, it means it is time for you to make a decision on what to do next.

fingers move faster but they have to react to your movement and if you move precisely they cannot react fast enough to shoot you try it with an airsoft gun. Its not speed against speed it's reaction against movement

Is it stating the obvious that before you consider snatching handguns away from folks you got to know how they work? I can take the wooden dummy gun, but if I got a real one I'd have to stand screaming like a ninny until someone came to put the safety on and unload it for me. Oh my god.. If you put your finger on the hammer of a gun as long as the hammer isnt cocked back it cant fire and if the gun has a slide it only slides because the hammer already hit the bullet and its the force moving the slide.

If its just a robbery, the best thing to do is give the guy your wallet...not try to take the gun away....
And if you do take it away, these techniques on the video contain a lot of wasted movement. He grabs the gun in the wrong direction too..
If you grab it the other way, you can break the guys finger in the trigger guard...

i guess if there was something going on and the BG would be distracted, it is a good technique. Your point makes sense but usually a BG wouldnt attempt to rob you at gun point when there are other people or things around. Your best defense is pretend to reach for your wallet and draw your CCW and put 2 in his gut and run.

That's great if the guy is right on top of you and you're physically fit and fast. I still think the best defense is having a gun. If you are being mugged, turn your strong side away from the attacker to block his view and reach back as if to get your wallet. Hold your weak hand up and out in front of you as a distraction. Instead of handing over the wallet, you draw your gun and put a few in his chest.

I hate "false" defense vids... a simple turn of the body, a step forward, ANYTHING besides standing still would screw up this move (let alone the "attacker" was offering no resistance and the thumb is too weak to keep the hammer down)

This is just one of several ways to disarm someone with a gun. Obviously if the person with the gun is far away this won't work nor if the gun doesn't have an external hammer will this work. Nor if the person has an oozie. This technique is specifically geared to disarm that particular gun if the gunman is close distance to you.

This would not work with a Glock pistol because it has an internal hammer.Martial arts is highly over rated and only the truely best can stand up against an armed attacker but if the gun is a glock or they are too far of reach they are helpless.A knife or baseball bat is more realistic and easier to disarm than a gun but I would rather shoot back instead of risking it big time trying to disarm a thug with fancy martial arts moves.

You'll get someone killed teaching this technique. Moving off line without changing the distance is a big problem. With a finger on the trigger, the attacker has only to follow your movement and shoot. Grabbing the gun is extremely risky. Also, if a shot goes off you'll get burned grabbing it that way.
