I love Cockatiels! They just have this innocent sweetness about them, and they're pretty easy to take care of. Ours likes my husband way better than me, but still, she's just sweet. they love to sing and whistle A LOT but it's not an an annoying way like some birds lol.
@wheelchairmommy How long have you had him? Some birds are afraid of fingers. :] You can try petting him with your nose instead. I'd also check out this forum called Tailfeathers Network, it's very helpful and the people there will answer your questions. If you know about his past too that should help!
@OMGZALLAMA we've had him over a year. I'm not going to put my nose near his beak thanks, he bites! he bites if my daughter tries to kiss him (she is 16), he bites whenever we try to get him on our fingers, we say STEP UP. he will step on our fingers but not before he's bitten a few times. he's also taken a small chunk of skin too. he does not like to be touched. I had a white cockatiel 25 years ago, used to belong to my ex's dad, now that bird loved to have its head rubbed or be stroked.
one of my cockatiels looks just like this one. he's a white-face silver pearl & his name is Sambuca. i have taught him to speak in complete sentences. he's learned to say things like "time to get up!" in the morning, & things like "i'm a pretty good bird!" & he says his name, he coughs, he laughs, etc. Cockatiels are the BEST pets!
They are naturally vocal, esp. the males. You don't need to teach them; however, if any particular tune or melody is whistled or spoken around them constantly enough, they're prone to mimic it, usually with greatly varying accuracy. Either way, it's cute, and they have little hearts of gold, esp. the hand-raised Cockatiels like this one!
@EvangeliumDiSilenti i think what he was trying to say is, you dont nessicarily *HAVE* to teach them, they will mimic things on their own, for instance if you listen to music and play a paticular song they happen to like they might whistle a little bit of the song...but you can teach them to talk as well.
@Dnash777 Ah. Well either way I still consider it teaching yourself if you put it on a recorder or something, even though you're not the one making the sound. You're still having the thing play for them so they learn to mimic it. That's just me though. Lol.
@IDameaux9I you don't need to teach them they do it naturally but you can teach them songs by whistling and i use to do it to my birds and they sang after me. i taught them a christmas song! :)
A slate grey male with white head and no orange cheek patches. This is a rare color mutation. Have you considered breeding him?

Stuff like what's in this video has to be taught, that's not their natural sound lol. Maybe you discovered this if you happened to get a cockatiel.
