The sound quality here is astonishingly good! Thanks for uploading, yopascualin. And what a wonderful song with the pairing of Glenn Miller and Ray Eberle. It doesn't get much better than them.
love the turntable but u should know .....the way they drop the record on the turntable while it spins scuffs your fine recordings never use an automattic turntable put the disk on then start it up and put the needle to the record
The song itself is the product of two great talents. It was originally an instrumental piece composed in the early 1900's by the greatest American popular composer of that era, Irish born Victor Herbert. The lyrics were added 30 or 40 years later by the incomparable Johnny Mercer of Savannah Georgia. I always thought the bitter sweet lyrics captured the essence of the lovely tune.
brings back memories of going to my grandmother's as a child..she enjoyed Mr. Miller's music and had some record player similar to the style of this one...probably a zenith tho.
Glenn was a great musician, and a true American hero as well. I will always respect him and the others like him who gave up so much for our country. This song is beautiful.
Lovin' these posts! I'm 38 and I'm discovering this great music thanks to folks like you for taking the time to post your records online Yopa. Keep this stuff alive forever.
Miller knew how to strike a mood as well as begin and end a song. His different sections practised without bass and drums, to get more feeling. A little known fact is that Miller would play fourth trombone parts. On live recordings, you can hear him belt out those low notes.
How I got interested in BIG BAND MUSIC. When I was about 16 years old (circa 1971) I bought an old crank up victrola and a TON of 78s off some old neighbor lady. It was a beautiful tall upright victrola made of "light colored oak". I paid 20 bucks for everything ($20.00 was alot of money then). Even though I still listened to Rock...beatles, stones etc....I became really interested in the old music and grew to love it. My favorite has always been Harry James....fantastic tone from his horn
I started getting interested in Big Band Swing @ 14 in 1974 - Harry James and Artie Shaw are my favorites - but there are SO many great records from that era.
A lovely song, there is a version on here by Gracie Fields, completely different but nice, this is one of my favourite songs thanks for posting nice turntable too.
There is a great version of this song by Miss Ella Fitzgerald at the Carnegie Hall in 75 or perhaps 76. Beautiful lyrics, great music and a heart rending performance. I just love it so much. She makes the melody float if thats the right word to describe the atmosphere.
Even though I was born after Glenn Miller died, I love listening to his music. It's so evocative of an important time in US history, and a reminder that US can still be a great nation who helps solve the problems of this world, and not just cause them.
Fantastic. Sounds awesome. I have just restored the mechanics of Philips truntable. Although I dont have any 78's I can try out yet. Thanks for posting this one.
I have this song on a Bluebird 78. May I say that your record sounds better. Could be your stunning Phillips. I use a Garrard RC-80 with Magnavox amps. Im getting an Elac XA100. I hope ELAC is a quality turntable. Please keep the Miller magic alive. Thanks.
I love Ray Eberle's vocals. His brother Bob sang with Jimmy Dorsey, and performed many duets with Helen O'Connell. In fact, Glenn Miller ran into Bob once and asked whether he had a brother. When Bob said he did, Glenn said, "If he's a brother of yours, I know he can sing. Tell him I'll give him a job."
There hasn't been much-better music than that produced by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, with Ray Eberle on the vocals. In my opinion, Ray was the best of the big-band-era singers.

Al Dubin wrote the lyrics, not Johnny Mercer. Herbert wrote the tune in 1919.
My absolute favorite rendition would be Anita O'Day's swinging cut. What a great song.

Ray Eberle is okay, but on this song, Ginny Simms has a more credible interpretation. She glides and lets you know it was a real loss.

leonor123456 3 years ago
