I can see the trouble of linking your present day knowlege & definitions of things like arithmatic & geometry. However, is it not that hard to see the analogy in the list.
For example, arithmatic you might understand as points, or one dementional. Geometry, two dementional, a flat plane. "Solid geometry" I can only assume may refer to 3 demetional plane/objects.
So if you were to compare the gradual steps to adding demension to the studies, it seems pretty clear.
