  • this song was written by a woman who lost her husband during WWi..not II

Unless if he died during the sneak attack on pearl harbor

  • @Freyja1133 : Ruth Lowe, the composer of I'LL NEVER SMILE AGAIN, was once a pianist with Ina Ray Hutton's all girl orchestra. Should be noted that Ina Ray Hutton didn't have a band around during WWI. In fact, Ruth Lowe's husband, Harold, passed away in 1939 during an operation. Ruth Lowe wrote the song just after his passing. Glenn Miller recorded it in Feb. 1940 and Tommy recorded it three months later. From an American stand point, pre-WWII, but from an English stand point , very much WWII.

  • why are the views not in the millions?? THE greatest, most meaningful song ever

  • This was the number #1 song when John Lennon was born.

  • Very cool video - really makes that very special time come alive again, especially showing the radio.

  • I am a big JESUS FREAK who loves JESUS CHRIST more than anything. Even HE knows I like romance and am waiting for HIM to send me my man of GOD to romance with for the rest of my life. I used to want a romance like Frank and Ava--but I'll settle for Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekkah, and Jacob and Rachel. My father is 83 and rememebrs big band---he played in one. Nothing famous. GOD bless yall and JESUS CHRIST loves yall.

  • @peacheslovesjesus just... just... shut up

  • @MegaPinkfloydlover Grow up. No. There. satisfied. GOD bless you.

  • The best there ever was or ever will be!

  • Beautiful!!!! born in the wrong era!!!

  • According to Wikipedia, this song was the first number-one record ever reported by Billboard Magazine, August 1940, when I was born.

Before that, they had only listed sheet-music sales.

  • Every time I listen to this...to Frank or Ella or their nonpareil peers, I feel myself falling in love with American history all over again. Imagine the meaning this song would have had to all the families who lost someone in the devastating war that was about to break out...imagine the meaning it has to everyone who's ever lost anyone.

  • To all you Atlanta Braves fans out there (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when Jonathan Schuerholz came into the world (October 1, 1940).

  • Can anyone else show some other artists like Frank? I have his entire discography and I want to find more songs and artists like him and such.

  • This song is so...honest. Anyone who has lost a dear one thinks these things. It is a good song to play and remember and perhaps shed a tear or two. That it is Sinatra singing it makes it all the more special. How it must have been like when Tommy Dorsey played this LIVE with Sinatra singing, and you got your girl on the dance phloor...it had to be a special romantic moment.

  • I was born in the wrong decade. This is what real music is.

  • @Comeeatmebra tell me about it

  • <3

  • sounds like a soldier

  • beatiful

  • ♪♫ I’ll never smile again Until I smile at you I’ll never laugh again What good would it do For tears would fill my eyes My heart would realize That our romance is through I’ll never love again I’m so in love with you I’ll never thrill again To somebody new Within my heart I know I will never start To smile again until I smile at you ♪♫ This song is one reason that I picked up that complete Tommy Dorsey/Frank Sinatra CD set a few years ago. Cool video, radio at the beginning.
  • wasn't ruth lowe's husband in the RCAF shot down, hence the song. poignant to know the story & lyrics

  • nothing like the old songs.

  • i remember walking down the road singing this late at night haha its been a while since i have listened to it

  • @FatManDoubleZero i think this is what makes it what it is. the fact is that it hasn't been digitally remastered makes it classic and gives me the chills.

  • Beautiful! Too bad this copy isn't digitally re-mastered to remove the scratches and pops that are realy irritating.

  • @FatManDoubleZero thats the charm of it in my opinion

  • @FatManDoubleZero That's what gives you the sense of the times.

  • @FatManDoubleZero that majkes it better and more classical

  • @FatManDoubleZero i mean makes

  • This just reminds me of my grandma who brought me up with this music. :) As a young teenager..It just makes me so happy to hear this music.

  • The very first number one hit on the Billboard charts.

My how the times have changed.

  • i like this song and im 13.its so pretty

  • @Cellogracen1 would you recomend some of these songs to movies that desperately need emotion and love

  • the way the tune goes is amazing, its just perfect. reminds me of old tv shows my grandparents and me watch. kids gotta realize the amazing music of the past.

frank and bing!!! all the way!!

  • i heard this song today at the jazz museum here in kansas city... best three minutes of my whole day

  • What do u feel when u hear these songs?

  • Great song by a Toronto gal, and sung by Sinatra and the Pied Pipers. There is a second version of I'LL NEVER SMILE AGAIN with Frank Sinatra and, I think, backed by Tommy Dorsey.

  • @hngdad : Also an earlier version by Glenn Miller.

  • Beautiful.

  • It just doesn't get any better than this.

  • is there any1 here who appreciates big band who isnt over 40?

  • thumbs up if u think todays movies could do better with songs like these

  • The Platters did a good version of this song.

  • Frank Sinatra captured the first ever Billboard #1 single with Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra :DDD

  • Lovely,just lovely :-)

  • Music from the celluloid years R exactly what 2days movies R missing

  • classic

  • Its just wonderful

  • thumbs up if nice oldies songs are way better then the weird songs that we have today

  • The first #1 hit on Billboard charts ever! =D lovely song!

  • U should all definetly listen 2 stardust by these guys, it completely belongs with Rio & would add drama for once

  • <3

  • This song ranks in the top 3 all-time. A very haunting but beautiful song!

  • @musicman130man I totally agree

  • 3 people never smiled 2 begin with

  • they've done it again and never cease to amaze us

  • Seriously, if you've just been dumped by the one you thought you loved, you WILL go into depression.

  • @thecousinbellic That is so true...

  • They don't make beautiful music like this anymore.

  • just gorgeous

  • I'm 19 and this song is very sad and beautiful. Last year (2010) I dreamed so many times in the night at home, alone with this song imagine a fictional lady dancing in the dark with me. The only light I could see was the deep blue music player light.

  • I'm 59 years old...back when I was maybe 4-5 yrs old I remember my parents singing along with Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey et al circa 1955-56. And I particularly remember this one..one of "Frankie's" biggest hits when he was the original teen idol! Thanks for posting it!

  • I always envisioned early Sinatra being portayed by a young Leonard Di Caprio. Both have those chiseled, sculptured features. Agreed?

  • God Bless You Frank, Val

  • Long live the 430Th TFW. My other brothers. We hunted monsters and made the sky safe....Cheers TF

  • I'm reading "Frank" the latest book about Sinatra and the author goes into a lot of detail about the whole Dorsey-Sinatra relationship and quite a bit about this arrangement in particular. Read it if you get a chance and thanks for posting.

  • This was the first song to be #1 when the Billboard was created!!

  • @mknsmkl01 Cool info!

  • This song was #1 in 1940, the year I was born, and now I am 70 and alone since my husband died two years ago. The lyrics are lovely and very meaningful to me. He was very special and made me laugh for 5o years.

  • @ceeceeh Beautiful song - sorry to hear about the passing of your husband. Music seems to have the capacity to bring back memories like nothing else does.

They simply don't have the beauty and sentiment in music today like they used to in the days of Frank and Tommy Dorsey and all those other wonderful performers.

You may like to listen to Glenn Miller and Ray Eberle with Handful of Stars or Stairway to the Stars as well - great memories.

  • @ceeceeh In fact it can be regarded as the first number one hit in the official Billboard charts

  • @ceeceeh :'( <3

  • @ceeceeh Yes, this song is great! Well, about your husband, I'm sure he is in a better place right now.

  • @ceeceeh im so sorry

  • @ceeceeh What 70 year old has youtube >_>

  • @manbob50060 That's such an arrogant thing to say about a 70 yr old. I'm 71 and have been on YouTube for years. There a whole generation of us elders who are online everyday. We're emailing, shopping, viewing youtube and anything else we feel like. You shouldn't make fun of the old timers...you'll be here before you know it.

  • Thanks for posting this wonderful song!!

  • thats what you called melody!!!i can still hear the spin in d turn table!!!its so calming!!!

  • I am reading the book "Battle Cry" by Leon Uris about WWII.This song is mentioned, " a lilty voice, Frank Sinatra, crooning". In the book it's Danny's (a Marine just out of boot camp) and Kathy's (his home town girl) favorite song. Had to listen to it... my Dad was a Marine in WWII and like the main character Danny joined the Marines straight from High school, right after Pearl Harbor.Dad loved the Big Bands. Listening to this song along with this book sure gives you the feel of the times.

  • @Ssckxg : Thanks for commenting.

  • Beautiful. Makes me nostalgic for a place I've never been.

  • 1940 - Billboard publishes its 1st singles record chart (#1 is "I'll Never Smile Again" by Tommy Dorsey)

  • Now, what I had heard was that Ruth Lowe wrote this in part because she lost her fiance overseas in the war! Now, the United States didn't enter the war till 1941? I thought this song to be a wartime classic, correct me if I am wrong please. I have this version on a 38 from my Dad's record collection, as well as a 33 1/3 Sinatra solo version from the 50's. This is not my era, yet I appreciate this music so much!

  • Ms. Lowe wrote "I'll Never Smile Again" following the premature death of her first husband in 1939; he died during surgery to correct a kidney problem.

  • @Shamrocked4Ever

Thank you, I had read the exact same thing a week ago in the Library when I decided to look it up, thank you so much for your reply though.

  • @Shamrocked4Ever Look up "Ruth Lowe" on Wikipedia for the full story about the writing of this song.

  • @Shamrocked4ever - I’ve had on my play list for years thank you for giving the hint to find inspiration for this song makes it even more sad and gives a human element that adds to the songs stature a real standard, tried to find Joe Williams version on YT not here I’ll post when I get my gear I’m looking for George Shearing's version on YT if not I’ll put that up too later – I hope people research the inspiration for Ms Lowe plus "Put Your Dreams Away" - RIP - Thank You Ms Lowe

  • Love this one...thanks.

  • @jazz0685 : Very welcome.

  • @MrRJDB1969 : )
