I see comments about ANWR. The Alaskan pipeline has a capacity of 2mil/bpd. Prudhoe Bay is in terminal decline and currently produces 1.3mil/bpd. Even if we drill ANWR and turn the valves all the way up, that will only add 700,000/bpd. The US currently uses about 20mil/bpd.
I don't disagree and I'm not opposed to drilling here, drilling now. The point I'm trying to make is that it is not the solution they portray it as. It won't lower gas prices now, next month, next year, 5 years from now.
Oil production has been on a plateau since about 2005. Worldwide demand has increased. The result is $4.50 gas. Yea, we should probably drill here to reduce imports, but this will NOT lower the price. Oil is traded in an international market.
I know people who worked in the Texas oil fields in the late 70's and early 80's. They told me that most of those oil wells that were drilled, were capped and are still capped. All done for market reasons. We have more than enough existing oil wells already drilled....you just need to convince BIG OIL to start pumping them....they wont do it however because they are in cahoots with the Saudi's and OPEC. THE PRICE OF GAS HAS NOT GONE UP. The value of the dollar has just gone down! in 1947 a gallon of gasoline cost about 25 cents. A 1947 quarter contained 1/4 ounce of silver which is worth.. guess what! over $4.50. Which means, THE VALUE OF GAS HAS GONE DOWN. Wakeup people these are shell games.
The value of the dollar has definitely gone down, but the demand for oil has grown exponentially while supplies have changed little. Supply and demand causes oil to cost more.
next lets start a petition to keep computer companies from having such high prices!! Lets do it!!
hey did you even realize you replied to me using either a microsoft computer or an apple computer?
Oh and i just replied to you using a mac. I guess that means that i helped become part of the high computer price problem by buying a mac and that i need nothing other to do in order to change the problem than to educate myself...
This sudden urgency to lift the moritorium on offshore drilling is just political grandstanding.
The problem is not lack of supply. Oil companies have lots of leases within the US they are not developing. They can increase oil production within the US today if they want to. The moritorioum is not holding prices up.
And remember we have not nationalized our oil production, so any oil pumped out of US territory is the property of Big Oil. Why would they sell it to you at a discount?
Actually the moratorium is in the way, right now oil companies have leases all over the world. They are developing the easiest ones that they can get the quickest easiest returns on. They aren't allowed to drill in some of the new huge discoveries of the US.
Nationalizing your oil would be the biggest disaster you could ever imagine. You think 5 dollars for a gallon of gas is bad, wait until you go to the pump and they don't have any gas. Flood the market with oil and prices will drop..
Why must it be that if we drill for oil here we can not explore alternate fuels? They are not mutually exclusive. We can use oil until a reasonable alternative comes along. (Coal gasification sounds good to me)
You know what? No. This is a temporary, easy way out, that doesn't look to the future at all. American auto makers and other oil using corps. had the opportunity over a decade ago to embrace alternative fuel sources & begin the process of weaning this country off petroleum. But greed trumped foresight. Well, not this time. We are paying the price. It's a bitter pill, but the answer this time is not MORE oil. It's less. Tough love, but this will fast track alternative fuel development even more.
Why is the Republican Party -the party that is supposedly in favor of "personal responsibility"- have no problem forgiving corporate America for the most egregious acts of irresponsibility? These companies have dragged their feet, kicking and screaming into the 21st century, while Republicans turned a blind eye. You can't have it both ways. This is why your party is losing seats in congress. People are realizing you are the party of yesterday and now. Not tomorrow and beyond.
Let's not forget that your "Party of Tomorrow and Beyond" has held power over Congress for a half year and hasn't done DIDDLY SQUAT for the American Citizen!
We are the most technologically advanced country on earth with some of the brightest & best minds around. We put people on the moon 40 years ago! But instead of similarly trying to tackle the issue of ending our fossil fuel addiction, we have blown billions and billions on war and waste. So now, you guys want to use a 20th century technique (drill for oil!) to answer a decidedly 21st century problem? No way. Your short term solution is just more destructive 20th century Republicanism. No more.
I have the ultimate solution. Render Sean Hannity and Newt Gingrich and his 4 wives down into oil. That should lower the price significantly. Now who is on board with that?!
Big Oil corporations have no interest in lowering the price of gas. They lease these fields for a fraction of their value, enjoy tax breaks and charge whatever the market will pay.
This is not blaming the corporations. They exist to maximize profits and make money for the stockholders.
We could have promoted alternatives to oil and CAFE standards more. But policy lately has been crafted by and for big corporations for years.
"Big Oil" is us. We are the stockholders. If you own an IRA or mutual funds then you probably have a share in "Big Oil". If you want to punish them stop driving. Here's an alternative: ride a bike.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
While stockholders do get a share of Big Oil's profits, I wuld disagree thet Big Oil is us. Corporations are not democratic institutions. "We" are supposed to be represented by our government.
To get ourselves out of this mess we ought to raise the leas rates for any new oil leases, and use the revenue to promote alternatives to oil.
Trust me. Increased drilling will not bring the price of oil down.
The government is the largest corporation in the U.S. Of all the 'evil profits' that the 'Evil Big Oil' makes, 85% or more of that is taxed and sent straight to the government. "Big Oil" pays more taxes than 95% of the U.S. population combined. A new oil refinery hasn't been built in the U.S. for over 35 YEARS. Why? Because the U.S. already has the #1 highest corporate tax rate IN THE WORLD. Oil companies don't make profits = no oil production. No oil production = higher gas prices.
WOW! You need to do some reading. You are totally misinformed! Oil company profits are astonomical and the tax rates corporations pay are so far below what individuals pay, when you factor in deductions, it's obscene.
Now I don't say profits are evil, but corprations need to be regulated or we lose our midde class.
What's goin on now with the price of oil is similar to energy prices when Enron was pulling off their big scam. You are getting shafted, not Exxon.
THE MIDDLE CLASS WORKS AT THESE 'CORPORATIONS'. CHeck your parents retirement funds...they probably have oil stocks in them. So be careful what you wish for. And by the way ...corporations PAY BILLIONS in taxes..they more breaks they get ..the better. Because those breaks end up in your wallet !!! NOT THE GOVERNMENTS. EXXON gives you gas for your money...the government just takes your money.
"Trust me. Increased drilling will not bring the price of oil down."
So you're saying that increasing the supply while the demand stays the same will not result in lower prices? You might as well be saying that the supply and demand model is not true.
it will definitely lower the prices but one thing is that the oil companies control the pricing and theyve been getting this much money thus far so they can still have higher prices to make ridiculous profits.
now increase in supply and same demand definitely lowers prices. but whos to say that the oil prices are all of a sudden going to be fair and give us an honest price?
"Evil Big Oil" doesn't control the price of gas. If they lowered their prices, they would all go out of business within years. They don't enjoy tax breaks - they pay more taxes and in higher percentage than anybody else.
"Evil Profits" are what drives America forward. From profits come investments, innovation, growth, economic progress, and eventually a better, cheaper, more abundant product.
Why do we pay double for our gas when we have plenty within our reach? We would not need these Arab countries. Who let them build Mosques in our country, anyway? That was a nutty stroke of genius!!! That's why I call Democrats--dummycrats. None of them have any education==yet they call Republicans dumb. Then they tell us we have all the money. Wait, I thought we were dumb. Again, dummycrats have no common sense.
They are the same people that claim we are polluting our land wins fossil fuels so we can't drill here.
I don't know about you but if we are polluting our air I would prefer we did it with our own oil not some from another country. And who are the geniuses that allowed China to drill off the coast of Florida?
How come the will of the few always seem to prevail?
The simple fact is that the U.S. sits upon an estimated 2 billion barrels of oil. That is more oil than all the oil produced since the petroleum age began. But we need to get it, refine it and make it available. The next step in this campaign should be to tell the Congree and Senate we will not vote for anyone who stands opposed to our energy independence; and, that we want to a national referendum voted on my Americans to do just that. Relying upon foriegn oil is a great national security risk!
This is interesting given Obamas recent announcement that America is now energy efficient..

it will definitely lower the prices but one thing is that the oil companies control the pricing and theyve been getting this much money thus far so they can still have higher prices to make ridiculous profits.
now increase in supply and same demand definitely lowers prices. but whos to say that the oil prices are all of a sudden going to be fair and give us an honest price?

I like your term calling Dems. Dummycrats.

We don't need a petition. We need actual legislation to reverse Congressional interference in the economy.
Congress needs to stop looking at every issue and think that it is a good place for it to impose its will upon citizens through force.
We need a separation of state and economics as much and for the same reasons that we need a separation of church and state.
