Cool I need to move to an area like this it should be bug free ! Thank God for King Coal a American fuel that provided American Jobs. Shame I was born to late after we killed all our industry & prosperity. Thanks to the silent and boomer generations we are a has been nation.
Take a trip thru northern Pennsylvania to see the forever residue of ancient coal mines. I used to go trout fishing in the un-spoiled waters, but now they are far and few between and way too crowded for my tastes.
I remember back in the 80's I read an artical in popular science where they was talking about using rods of zinc 7 copper to create a giant battery. it did not make any useful electricty but it did rais the Ph of these sludge ponds. The worst part about these ponds is when they wear out & flood the folks down stream. nobdy's responable. If your lucky FEMA will give a trailer to live in for a little while & your land is runined. I still think we need the mines but this kind of mess is unnessary.
Thanks for this vid it was a real wake up. I never knew was out there. Everywhere I've been. All that was needed was to boil and you where good to go. Other than that orange color is there any way to tell? Also any way to make it drinkable? Adding baking soda maybe.
@roguepathfinder baking soda will help neutralize the acidity, but there are far worse things to worry about with that water. Heavy metals such as mercury, lead. Toxins such as arsenic are at high concentrations in this type of water. Iron, sulpher etc.... I would drink it nor would I allow my worst enemy to do so.
Well when this one was dug it was probably owned by a coal company. Then purchased by the national forest service. But there are situations where companies lease the mineral rights to public areas
Yea its not much of a problem where i live in northeast ohio, but where i go to school in southeast ohio its a big issue. Where in ohio did you grow up
Well that question seems a litl out of my knowledge zone, my first guess would be no, but maybe it would im not sure, i will try to find out. Good question
Thanks for noticing bro, i am majoing in wildlife management at hocking college as well as a lot of other environmental sciences, thanks for the comment and the support

Absolutely horrible to see a once pristine piece of woodland be turned into a "festering wound on the earth".
