You're too cute to grimace besides opening the door is something that YOU chose to do out of kindness of course and I like that about you but it's like loaning friends money don't expect to be paid back and if you are then be pleasantly surprized.
A lot of people who live in my part of San Diego have an attitude of entitlement. You hold a door open and they look at you as if to say, "About time you got here. Are you looking me in the eye?"
I'm pretty sure the only thing old ladies should be afraid of from Grimace is his gay mannerisms (which are not a bad thing Grimace, but old women tend to be afraid of gay people XD)
besides, they were raised in the age of chivalry! when they see "youngins nowadays" holding doors open for them instead of smoking pot, you would think they would be overjoyed from this miraculous return of chivalry!! XD
No, the real reason Chivalry is dead is because no one understands it. Chivalry is not about getting a reward, verbal or otherwise, for doing something kind to a fellow human being. Yes, it does lean towards helping woman more but that is because it was created in a time when woman were considered inferior. Now, the term Chivalry has been adapted to making someone's, anyone's, life just a little easier. Not for your sake but for theirs. That is what Chivalry is about.

I'll open it up for her". I am thinking that its the polite thing to do to assist her, and a nice "thank you" always shows that it was appreciated. Last thing I might add is chivalry nowadays isn't only one way. women can be chivalrous towards men (although I don't think they call it that).
just cos you had 'one bad experience' doesn't mean you should use it as an excuse not to bother with chivalry anymore. did you ever think that if everyone thinks like you, then chivalry will die even more? imagine if ppl stop caring about anything! i think you should keep practicing chivalry no matter what. who knows? u might even set a good example for others.

you just need to go find a huge line of people going out a door (or in one for that matter!) and hold it open for them!
if you can, try to hold both the inside door and the outside door open if there are two layers.
You'd be surprised how many people say thank you if you are making a funny display of it XD (because they think about it more I suppose)
or... just open the door for a long line of people the normal way - I even get guys saying thank you (sometimes for they're girlfriends LOL)
