There are just so many ways you can do it: samples, real instruments etc. Do it solo, in a band with a DJ, up to you. Back in a day they used trackers to make songs, ofcourse now you have Reason and that kind of software :) and hardware obviously.

Check some LE live performances or Anders Meinhardt drumming for some live action.
