They were sloppy, their footwork was difficult and soooo fast but not very well presented. If Torvill and Dean weren't given incorrect deductions they would have won. The flow and presentation of T&D's program is clearly better and their moves may have been done before but they were still more difficult and imaginative the G&Ps
@ThePlymouthgirl See what I wrote to 'nhojbew'. You may not be from United Kingdom, but you are obviously a fan of Torvill/Dean. I guess, that makes it hard to be objective, but it doesn't mean that you can't try. I too have my favourite figure skaters, but that doesn't make me think that they are the best at all times.
@ThePlymouthgirl After watching it more carefully I can say that I like the choreography more than I did at the beginning. It is not too original for figure skating in general, but it's original enough for competition - actually it looks more like a show program and/or performance, not like an ordinary competition program. And that makes it original for the given situation.
@nhojbew Can you explain - what does "sloppy" mean in real figure skating terms? Whatever that means in your book, in my opinion, it's quite difficult to do expressive and/or beautiful moves with the speed that they have. Given that, I think that they were doing quite well.
@nhojbew To be frank, I don't like this choreography all that much either + I am not their fan (just as I am not a fan of Torvill/Dean), as I was not watching all that much figure skating at that time. But even I can see that they are really good. So, I think, you being from the United Kingdom and a fan of Torvill/Dean, says something.
Oksana and Evgeny were ROBBED at the 1994 Europeans. They deserved a gold medal but this british team robbed them. They must return Oksana's and Evgeny's Gold medals to their owner. FED EX them ASAP.
I am inspired by this performance! They are so beautiful together and their ice dancing is very creative and unique! Beautiful skating looks like it is so easy, but increadibly difficult in fact. Thank you for the joy of watching you!
I personally disagree. All of their wins were highly deserved but to me, this one was perhaps the most questionable. This program has moments of brilliance and they showed up to this competition looking fit, ready, and super-prepared. But there were an awful lot of breaks in the choreography. I could understand any order of the top 3 that year.
So fascinating to study the evolution of this discipline. Torvill & Dean ushered in the dramatic '80s (deaths on the ice, etc..) which I rather enjoyed. The '94 Olympics had a new set of rules designed to force the skaters back to more traditional ballroom dancing styles. After the 2002 skate-gate Olympics, the rules became almost stifling in their requirements. By today's standards, this would be appropriate for an exhibition performance. Not to say that they couldn't handle today's rules!
Wow, this is quite strange. USUALLY, when you think about, most of the ice dancing olympic champions dance to something very classic like Carmen or Bolero or Beethoven's Sonatas. But this is absolutely different, winning with rock and roll. There's nothing wrong with it but definitely unique.

DiamondsOnice you must me out of your mind. What are you trying to prove? You can write a poem about yourself MR.Chris but it is pointless because OKSANA and EVGENY ARE THE BEST ice dancers on the planet!!!!!!!!!
Torvil and Dean got 3 sets of perfect sixes for artistic impression. They had an audience of 24 million in Great Britain alone. They trained world champions the Duchesnays, they won 5 proffesional titles, and Christopher Dean has two emmies for his choreography. They had at least three of their own world tours, that were all a sell-out, and are now veiwed every Sunday by 10 million people. They are the greaest, and i think this performance just proves that not even Russians can beat them.
Oksana and Evgeny were Robbed at the europeans that year. They won this amazing free dance with 6.0 marks and standing ovation not just at the competition but also at every official rehearsal where skaters, coaches, ISU members and other skating and not skating audience from all over the world were.
Oksana and Evgeny ARE the BEST ice dancing team on the PLANET!!! TWO times OLYMPIC champions, 5 Times World champions and 3 Times European champions. They should have been also 4 Times European champions but T&D stole their gold medal in 1994 europeans but Oksana and Evgeny got their deserved Gold that year anyways at the Olympics and Worlds.
what a load of rubbish..these two aren't fit to lick the boots of Torvill and Dean..Torvill and Dean were robbed..but when you have four 'soviet' judges out of nine i suppose it's not surprising..anyway Torvill and Dean will go down as the greatest ice dancers ever..don't remember Grischuk and Platov getting straight 6.0 across the board do you?
Absolutely unbeatable Oksana and Evgeny are genius!!!
No one could ever be compared to this two. their speed, amazing technic, fun presentation, extremely deep edges and unique style. If any one would ever say anything negative they just envy and cannot help that this guys are absolutely AMAZING!!!
We can understand those bitter people who is envy that Oksana and Evgeny ARE UNBEATABLE and no one could ever bit them even T&D. Oksana and Evgeny not just skate with a very high speed but also very difficult technic, outstanding and fun presentation, very deep edges and unique style.
messy and unoriginal. Yes they can skate fast with difficult footwork but as soon as the music slows they have no idea what theyre doing. Pretty two dimensional if yo ask me. We all know what was happening with Russians and figure skating throughout the 90s so we really shouldn't bother with arguing Torvill and Dean's case as no one has achieved more than them in Ice Dancing. Aside from competitions their legacy still remains. Ice Dancing hasn't even begun to move on from them
Oksana and Evgeny Are Genius and absolutely outstanding skaters . The best in the history of ice dancing team. UNBEATABLE FOREVER. No one could ever get close to them. They won TWO OLYMPIC GOLD medals, 5 Times World champions and 3 times European champions.
Torvill and Dean won an Olympics, 4 worlds, 4 europeans, 5 professional world titles, 3 champions of champions titles. Their scores are so far ahead of anybody else. Torvill and Dean beat them once and lost to them once in a disputed decision. I will also mention their legacy again.
Oksana and Evgeny won TWO OLYMPIC GOLD medals, also 5 TIMES Worlds Gold medal and 3 Times European Gold medals. Their fourth GOLD from European was stolen by T&D who clearly didn't deserve that gold but Oksana and Evgeny did. D even mention it in his interview right after European 1994 that he thought Oksana and Evgeny should have won that Gold and not him.
also Oksana and Evgeny is in Guiness book of record for being TWICE Olympic champ. T&D do NOT have that record beaten.
Oksana and Evgeny WON TWICE Olympic GOLD 1994 and 1998, also they won 5 Times World Championship and 3 Times European Championship ( one of that Worlds they won in junior with different partners).
They ARE in Guniness book of records for being the ONLY team in ice dancing to win Olympic Gold twice. BRAVO!
Oksana and Evgeny had standing ovation and NONE stop applause even during every rehearsal from all the skaters, coaches, choreographers, ISU members and the rest of the audience. BRAVO.
so they are in fact, as a couple, only 4x World Champions..you shouldn't try to mislead people..it is blatantly obvious to anyone with a head that had Torvill and Dean continued they would have won Gold in 1988..and as I said..one word..Bolero! Does the general public all over the world remember their rock n roll FD? Of course not..everyone remembers Bolero!
We were personally watching this Olympic performance and all of the rehearsals and witnessed how all of the people were screaming from excitement to see this two skating this fun program and giving them none stop applause and standing ovation.
Absolutely outstanding performance with extremely high speed, energy, outstanding difficult ice dancing technic and just fun to watch. i was there personally and even on rehearsals this team got standing ovation and none stop applause from all of the people was there watching.
Amazingly difficult program. Absolutely wonderfully performed with so much energy, speed, excitement and fun. It seems so easy and light but who knows the real figure skating would know that it is extremely technically difficult program.
What a joy to watch this two gorgeous ice dancers who made history in ice dancing in becoming two Times Olympic gold medal winners. G&P are the greatest!!!
These 2 are fucking awful & as LPCLASSICAL said they should sent those Gold Medals to their RIGHTFUL owners who happen to be Torvill & Dean.......THE GREATEST ICE DANCERS OF ALL TIME!!
Although T&D won that night anyway because everyone in the world knew who won the GOLD that night but the judges were so bitter that they were allowed back then showed up all the amaterus by being better than they were so the judges screwed them over!
I agree with you. While this is not too bad, in my opinion (I can't skate, so I might be talking nonsense here), but it's nothing compared to Torvill and Dean! I don't know much about skating, but this looks rather messy to me... For sure, I was not awed by this performance as much as T&D's...
G&P are the best ice dancers ever in the history of ice dancing. Their technic, energy and passion put them on the top of the mount which no one could reach even today. BRAVO!!!!!!!!!
Crap that was a frentic mess, with lousy musical choices. I like some of G&Ps dances, but this isn't one of them and it shouldn't have won. I hope the judges enjoyed the bribes.

This is such a cliche performance - totally lacking in originality and true ice dance art. G and P should take those gold medals and Fedex them directly to their true owners.
It comes across as very contrived as well. In comparison to some of their later-and far superior dances- this one is such a question mark for me. It doesn't strike me as Olympics caliber. The Memorial and The Feeling Begins do, but this does not.
From 1988 till the end of eligible carrier 1998, Pasha never lost any of competition, received a record number in history of the highest marks - 6.0 in the period from 1994 to 1998 and setting new standards for artistic beauty and technical in ice dancing. Pasha has won a record of Gold Medals (total 26), become the only Lady in sport history to receive Olympic Gold Medals Two Times one after other in 1994 and the other in 1998! She is in the Guinness Book with that success. And I love her :)
I think Pasha lost a few comps until 1994 olympics when they became unbeatable. She and platov didn't win the previous year before in the worlds. she is brilliant though.
In the history of dance they certainly are not 2nd behind Torvill and Dean. They are something like 12th behind Torvill and Dean, Klimova and Ponomarenko, Pahkanova and Gorshkov, Mosieva and Minenkov, Bestemianova and Bukin, Recogzy and Sallay, Anissina and Peizerat, Usova and Zhulin, Navka and Kostomarov, Denkova and Staviski, and Krylova and Ovsiannikov. I am talking about their abilities, not the judges rewards for them.
Longevity is certainly a valuable asset to have though. I consider T&D to be great ice dancers who redefined the sport. More importantly though I admire them as people and for the amazingly close friendship they have with one another to this very day.
Well, no argument there, I also admire T&D (more than these two, actually). Yes they did redefine the sport, and their sheer musicality and grace remains unsurpassed for me, probably even unequaled. But G&P are also unique in many ways - only they were not so creative artistically, and didn't happen to have a great coach or choreographer, apart from Dubova early on (Linichuk IMO is awful). In this competition I'd probably have U&Z first, T&D second and these two third.
And she's not really awful, at least I don't know her personally and physically she looks very nice, but I find most of the dances she put up for her couples rather distasteful, both in the choice of music and choreography. For me she practically ruined the fabulous Krylova and Ovsyannikov, who could've done so much more.
It's funny how often people accuse others of their own flaws. "Please take your rose tinted specs off"? Perhaps you're the one who has some kind of spectacles. You don't have to convince me of the greatness of T&D - they are great and unique, specially for their musicality and great choreography. But it takes nothing away from the other great ice dance couples, like Usova & Zhulin and Grischuk & Platov. G&P are very special, in their way of course. Longevity has nothing to do with it.
Please take your rose tinted specs off. Everyone will have their own opinion on this.
For me a great ice dancing couple must have technical & artistic ability, maturity, longevity, consistency and originality. T&D have been skating for over 30 years so in my opinion no one tops their chemistry together or contribution to ice dance.

lyverbird - you are absolutely right about the great skating and them deserving a medal, but not gold. However, I can't agree that T&D should've won the gold. I'm a huge fan of T&D, their OD was very special and was rightly placed 1st, but the FD was, at least for me, not as impressive technically or as well skated than Usova & Zhulin, who were robbed because of some kind of inner politiks.
I thought that Usova & Zhulin should've been dropped to 3rd. Although they had a lot of finesse, the content of almost all of their programs has always been very dissatisfying for me. They had a lot of fire, passion, and drama but not a lot of technical abilities. Considering what their strengths were, it made their horrendous FD from that year even more of a puzzle.
gk891 - we can only agree to disagree. I do agree that U&Z's free dance was not one of their best, specially compared to their fabulous 1993 FD, but for me it was still better then the competition, and technically not much weaker than G&P, and definitely better than T&D, much though I admire those. I didn't see them live, but judging from the recording, they had great speed, great edges and a lot of dance holds, as opposed to open skating. Definitely would have them 1st on FD and overall.
Fair enough, we can agree to disagree. But I thought U/Z looked slow and out of shape at the end of their FD. Although the handholds were good, I didn't think they were doing enough from within them. Back in 90-92, I always found it disappointing that Dubova always gave such greatly complex choreography to K/P and G/P but not with U/Z. They were very striking artistically but I just wasn't sold on their technical abilities.
They were her students from 1989 to 1992. Watch my vid on Grishuk & Platov at the 1992 Olympics and it's Dubova in the kiss & cry area. When it was discovered that Grishuk & Zhulin had an affair, it was Dubova who booted Grishuk out of her camp. Platov recently said in an interview that Dubova was the toughest coach he had ever. They were indeed her pupils.
Dubova was the evil bitch. She beat up Oksana in lake placid and also broke her front tooth, cracked her lip open and bleeding break Oksana's two ribs and left her with several dozens of bruises. She also bit up Yura Tchesnichenko and navka and so many other skaters.
Great skating to a horribly edited selection of music, I think this routine showed their potential alright and they certainly deserved to medal but in my opinion, they shouldn't have won the gold, T&D displayed more maturity and grace as well as effortless technical content that simply wasn't as flashy and obvious as G&P..
suzstephen -the fact that G&P broke up proves nothing, and has nothing to do with their qualities. I love T&D, artistically they are in a class of their own, but G&P were a fabulous pair, maybe the best of them all technically.
Please have a look at Torvill and Dean Rock n Roll OSP SHORT PROGRAMME in 1983!!! You will notice some of the choreography in this programme were borrowed from Torvill & Dean. Speaking of energy, this piece has far less energy than Torvill and Dean's Rock and Roll. Grishuk and Platov borrowed from T & D shamelessly except they are slower and not as in UNISON.
T&D are a bit better on the technical side, mainly their footwork. Read my comment under "Grishuk Platov 1994 Rock Around The Clock". But look at Grishuk and Platov's poses! T&D are nowhere close. You only need to watch T&D from thighs down. But with Grishuk and Platov, you can't spare anything. Their faces and their whole bodies are electrifying. Talking about borrowing, does any work come from a vacuum?
They are every where..In my myspace adress, facebook ,hot mail,im my telephone,in my room,in my computer.I love them. They are so special for me.But they dont know this.I am sure that if they knew it they would be surprised because I have a record, too. The record of watching them. They are perfect.
From 1988 till the end of eligible carrier 1998, Pasha never lost any of competition, received a record number in history of the highest marks - 6.0 in the period from 1994 to 1998 and setting new standards for artistic beauty and technical in ice dancing. Too many separations IMO, but their speed and her agility cannot be denied. This paved the way, though, for "Feeling Begins" and "Memorial." A hint of things to come!
there are periods of brilliance in this programme. Torvill and Dean's was more consistent and more original even if thye did use some of their own old moves.
They were sloppy, their footwork was difficult and soooo fast but not very well presented. If Torvill and Dean weren't given incorrect deductions they would have won.
BRAVO!
Mostpowerfulgirl 3 years ago
Oksana and Evgeny had standing ovation and NONE stop applause even during every rehearsal from all the skaters, coaches, choreographers, ISU members and the rest of the audience. BRAVO.
Mostpowerfulgirl 3 years ago
so they are in fact, as a couple, only 4x World Champions..you shouldn't try to mislead people..it is blatantly obvious to anyone with a head that had Torvill and Dean continued they would have won Gold in 1988..and as I said..one word..Bolero! Does the general public all over the world remember their rock n roll FD? Of course not..everyone remembers Bolero!
steps1 3 years ago
OKSANA and EVGENY FOREVER in Guiness book of records for winning TWICE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS 1994 and 1998 OLYMPICS.
NOONE could compare to this two NOT even Bolero...

That's a very bold statement.

Oksana and Evgeny the only ice dance team in the history of ice dancing who won TWO OLYMPIC GOLD medals.
Mostpowerfulgirl 3 years ago
We were personally watching this Olympic performance and all of the rehearsals and witnessed how all of the people were screaming from excitement to see this two skating this fun program and giving them none stop applause and standing ovation.
Mostpowerfulgirl 3 years ago
So far of being an outstanding performance. This might be the least interesting dancing program of any Olympic gold winning performance.
JesusGarciaRazcon 3 years ago 3
Absolutely outstanding performance with extremely high speed, energy, outstanding difficult ice dancing technic and just fun to watch. i was there personally and even on rehearsals this team got standing ovation and none stop applause from all of the people was there watching.

They did it better in Europeans that year. no offence like

Oksana and Evgeny absolutely incredibly amazing ice dancers. BRAVO!!!!!!!!!
Mostpowerfulgirl 3 years ago
Amazingly difficult program. Absolutely wonderfully performed with so much energy, speed, excitement and fun. It seems so easy and light but who knows the real figure skating would know that it is extremely technically difficult program.

What a joy to watch this two gorgeous ice dancers who made history in ice dancing in becoming two Times Olympic gold medal winners. G&P are the greatest!!!
Mostpowerfulgirl 3 years ago
MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE!!!
Mostpowerfulgirl 3 years ago
These 2 are fucking awful & as LPCLASSICAL said they should sent those Gold Medals to their RIGHTFUL owners who happen to be Torvill & Dean.......THE GREATEST ICE DANCERS OF ALL TIME!!
Although T&D won that night anyway because everyone in the world knew who won the GOLD that night but the judges were so bitter that they were allowed back then showed up all the amaterus by being better than they were so the judges screwed them over!
Zelinna12 3 years ago
I agree with you. While this is not too bad, in my opinion (I can't skate, so I might be talking nonsense here), but it's nothing compared to Torvill and Dean! I don't know much about skating, but this looks rather messy to me... For sure, I was not awed by this performance as much as T&D's...

Outstanding performance!!! Deserves 7.0.

Watching Oksana & Evgeny you're in another world for a short time. Just wonderful! Revolutionaries on ice.

This performance is kinda sloppy, and did not deserve to have a podium win. It was not Olympic standered.

Absolutely marvelous dance!!! The BEST ice dancing team in the history of ice dancing. Oksana and Evgeny ARE THE BEST!!!
Mostpowerfulgirl 3 years ago
Omg, this is a horrible dance. And the synchronization between them isn't too good either

Exactly... though I don't know much about skating, I thought they looked messy and they lacked the clean synchronization...

Oksana and Evgeny the Best ice dancers in the World!!! Bravo!

what a fantastic performance, full of energy and passion.
This skaters are GENIUS!!!
happyfaceskater 3 years ago
This is such a cliche performance - totally lacking in originality and true ice dance art. G and P should take those gold medals and Fedex them directly to their true owners.
LPCLASSICAL 3 years ago

And I love her :)
timucin73 3 years ago
I think Pasha lost a few comps until 1994 olympics when they became unbeatable. She and platov didn't win the previous year before in the worlds. she is brilliant though.

Not by a long short are they the best there second behind Torvill & Dean
slamballmanlita 3 years ago

More importantly though I admire them as people and for the amazingly close friendship they have with one another to this very day.
suzstephen 3 years ago
Well, no argument there, I also admire T&D (more than these two, actually). Yes they did redefine the sport, and their sheer musicality and grace remains unsurpassed for me, probably even unequaled. But G&P are also unique in many ways - only they were not so creative artistically, and didn't happen to have a great coach or choreographer, apart from Dubova early on (Linichuk IMO is awful). In this competition I'd probably have U&Z first, T&D second and these two third.
Ygrec1 3 years ago
Happy to see Someone from Israel!
P.s I don't think Linichuk is awful
b2367 3 years ago
LOL, same here...
And she's not really awful, at least I don't know her personally and physically she looks very nice, but I find most of the dances she put up for her couples rather distasteful, both in the choice of music and choreography. For me she practically ruined the fabulous Krylova and Ovsyannikov, who could've done so much more.
Ygrec1 3 years ago
It's funny how often people accuse others of their own flaws. "Please take your rose tinted specs off"? Perhaps you're the one who has some kind of spectacles. You don't have to convince me of the greatness of T&D - they are great and unique, specially for their musicality and great choreography. But it takes nothing away from the other great ice dance couples, like Usova & Zhulin and Grischuk & Platov. G&P are very special, in their way of course. Longevity has nothing to do with it.
Ygrec1 3 years ago
Despite WHOEVER may reply to my comments I am quite entitled to voice my opinion whatever it may entail! :)
suzstephen 3 years ago
Please take your rose tinted specs off. Everyone will have their own opinion on this.
For me a great ice dancing couple must have technical & artistic ability, maturity, longevity, consistency and originality. T&D have been skating for over 30 years so in my opinion no one tops their chemistry together or contribution to ice dance.

marmar1212 3 years ago 2
lyverbird - you are absolutely right about the great skating and them deserving a medal, but not gold. However, I can't agree that T&D should've won the gold. I'm a huge fan of T&D, their OD was very special and was rightly placed 1st, but the FD was, at least for me, not as impressive technically or as well skated than Usova & Zhulin, who were robbed because of some kind of inner politiks.
Ygrec1 3 years ago
I thought that Usova & Zhulin should've been dropped to 3rd. Although they had a lot of finesse, the content of almost all of their programs has always been very dissatisfying for me. They had a lot of fire, passion, and drama but not a lot of technical abilities. Considering what their strengths were, it made their horrendous FD from that year even more of a puzzle.
gk891 3 years ago
gk891 - we can only agree to disagree.
Ygrec1 3 years ago
Fair enough, we can agree to disagree. But I thought U/Z looked slow and out of shape at the end of their FD. Although the handholds were good, I didn't think they were doing enough from within them. Back in 90-92, I always found it disappointing that Dubova always gave such greatly complex choreography to K/P and G/P but not with U/Z. They were very striking artistically but I just wasn't sold on their technical abilities.
gk891 3 years ago
GP have never been Dubova's pupils. So, please dont try to be the smartest ass in FS.
arakhachatran 3 years ago
They were her students from 1989 to 1992. Watch my vid on Grishuk & Platov at the 1992 Olympics and it's Dubova in the kiss & cry area. When it was discovered that Grishuk & Zhulin had an affair, it was Dubova who booted Grishuk out of her camp. Platov recently said in an interview that Dubova was the toughest coach he had ever. They were indeed her pupils.
gk891 3 years ago
Dubova was the evil bitch. She beat up Oksana in lake placid and also broke her front tooth, cracked her lip open and bleeding break Oksana's two ribs and left her with several dozens of bruises. She also bit up Yura Tchesnichenko and navka and so many other skaters.

OksanaGrishuk 3 years ago
Great skating to a horribly edited selection of music, I think this routine showed their potential alright and they certainly deserved to medal but in my opinion, they shouldn't have won the gold, T&D displayed more maturity and grace as well as effortless technical content that simply wasn't as flashy and obvious as G&P..
lyverbird 4 years ago
Torvill & Dean are still skating brillantly today. Where are this couple? Exactly... point proven!
suzstephen 4 years ago
They have different partners today. That's why you can't hear about this particular pair anymore.
zuzanka1981 4 years ago
suzstephen -the fact that G&P broke up proves nothing, and has nothing to do with their qualities. I love T&D, artistically they are in a class of their own, but G&P were a fabulous pair, maybe the best of them all technically.
Ygrec1 3 years ago
Feel that energy. Picture /video perfect faces, bodies and moves!
jjan2007 4 years ago
Please have a look at Torvill and Dean Rock n Roll OSP SHORT PROGRAMME in 1983!!! You will notice some of the choreography in this programme were borrowed from Torvill & Dean. Speaking of energy, this piece has far less energy than Torvill and Dean's Rock and Roll. Grishuk and Platov borrowed from T & D shamelessly except they are slower and not as in UNISON.
battycys 4 years ago
T&D are a bit better on the technical side, mainly their footwork. Read my comment under "Grishuk Platov 1994 Rock Around The Clock". But look at Grishuk and Platov's poses! T&D are nowhere close. You only need to watch T&D from thighs down. But with Grishuk and Platov, you can't spare anything. Their faces and their whole bodies are electrifying. Talking about borrowing, does any work come from a vacuum?
