This is a mish mash actually. The clips of the old set are from the pilot. When they were making introductions they were on the set used to film the first season. The kitchen in the pilot was also different, and a different actress potrayed Judy. However during the introduction, Judy was Jamie Foxworth, but this wasn't the case in the original pilot. At the dinner table, the behind the head shot of Judy indicates that is NOT Jamie Foxworth but the original actress.
what a great way to introduce the show!!! but I hate the fact that the producers took Judy off the show and continued on like she never existed =/ because her parents were greed for money >=0 I guess that's why she turned to pornographic??...idk but the ending was awesome...and R.I.P Michelle AKA Mayra
Goddamn, I wish TV was still like this. I'm 28 now and I grew up on these shows. I was just watching my Perfect Strangers DVD the other day too. I miss this stuff so much. It'll never be duplicated, and sadly, Hollywood doesn't give a shit. Well, I do.
@thunder97 lol I know right!?! XD but still it wouldn't be the same without Myra and Grandma (R.I.P) and they would to old-looking to act the series...sigh* ohh the 90's how I miss it
Amazing how that crazy Mother Winslow turned into such a breakout character. I still remember eating Mother WinslOw's cereal for breakfast every morning. I threw a fit and told my parents I was going to kill myself when I broke the pullstring on my talking Mother Winslow doll. And then she went and robbed that video store in Las Vegas and got mixed up with drugs. Such a waste.
Isn't it interesting how the sets of these shows change over time? The Winslow's living room looks totally different. Notice also that instead of seeing a front porch outside the front door you see a foyer. These things change yet you don't notice until watching earlier episodes later.
If Steve Urkel never made an appearance, this show would have been canceled after the first 2 seasons, in my opinion. Though, it did get carried away with him the last 2 seasons of this show.
Harriet was the elevator operator in Larry and Balki's work place. They took her and Carl's character off of Perfect Strangers and gave them their own show. Poof! A spin off.
@curtistol No, she just disappeared without explanation. There were rumors they apparently were planning to have her randomly reappear in the next season that was to also have Steve and Laura's wedding, but the show was cancelled.
@vmelkon The whole show changed when Urkel came on the scene. It got to the point where the show was too ridiculous. If it wasn't for him I guess the show wouldn't have been as successful.
Yeah...I wish that Larry and Balki made guest appearences on Family Matters, but they never did. Come to think of it, Family Matters was supposed to be about Harriet and her life with her family, but Steve Urkel stole the show and threw out the main idea for it. Maybe that's way JoMarie Payton left the show.
Yeah thats why I think the show was cancelled around the ninth season. She dislike the fact that the Steve Urkel Character was getting all the screen time and she was slowly getting shoved aside, so she quit the show. The other actress they got to replace her was no where close to fitting the role. Jomarie Payton was one of a kind.
Yeah they did, and it didn't make sense to replace JoMarie as Harriette. She was the reason Family Matters was a spin-off because she played the character on Perfect Strangers. Having some one else play the character just takes away the show being a spin-off.
They were supposed to be in the first episode. Ironically, Carl and Harriette were supposed to move into their apartment. It was Carl who spilled cement in "Father Knows Best???"
Actually, Harriette mentions in the Perfect Srangers episode "Crimebusters" that she and Carl lives in the same apartment Balki and Larry lives in when she talks about her phone service. All of that got changed when Family Matters started.
Yeah, Juleel White said in an interview that the Steve Urkel thing was suppose to be a one episode deal. Apparently Steve Urkel had lived next door to the Winslows all along and had a crush on Laura since kindergarden.
Lol, I can't believe that this show was actually a spin off of Perfect Strangers! They shoulda had a cross episode where the cast goes on the other's show. Hilarious!
Carl: Dear lord, thank you for this food and your many blessings. deliver us from evil! Even if it were to walk right through our front door!" LOLOLOL!!!!!
Wow I don't remember this that well at all, even though I know I watched it back then. I guess it is just not as memorable as Perfect Strangers was for me.
I remember this too. I remember Rachel trying to get Richie to talk and then I remember some mean lady telling Eddie to get his feet off the blanket. LOL. I was eleven at the time. Wow!
I always watch footage of people from the late eighties and think to myself, "Little did they know, Steve Urkel was just around the corner.... " They had no idea what was about to hit them.
That font and those clips are from the Pilot episode of Family Matters. It's funny, the episode featured a different actress as Judy even though Jamiee Foxworth was in this promo.
judy got kick off the show cause her kept asking 4 more money but would have returned if renewed for the 10th season in played by the 1st judy valerie jones
haha i forgot that the house looked different in the pilot.
it was a great show...but i realized towards the end they forgot it was originally conceived as a show about the closeness of family, and it turned into a show about Urkel
Her mom wanted more screentime for her and they said no and fired her. So on her last appearance, Judy goes upstairs to her room....and never is seen again for the rest of the series. And as a kid, I honestly never noticed.
Both of those shows were good and really dealt with situations. I didn't like how Darius was portrayed. When Urkel came to the show it turned into a show about him and not the family. It was a good show and I enjoyed it.

I always thought Estelle was mean to Carl, even though he was her son. A lot of times, it felt like she should have been Harriet's mother instead, bnecause she felt more like a mother-in-law than a mother to Carl, and she was nicer to Harriet than to Carl.
I always thought Estelle was mean to Carl, even though he was her son. A lot of times, it felt like she should have been Harriet's mother instead, bnecause she felt more like a mother-in-law than a mother to Carl, and she was nicer to Harriet than to Carl.
@Furienna yeah Estelle's put downs to Carl was rather crude. But I don't know why she was nicer to Harriet...mother-in-laws basically cannot tolerate their daughter-in-laws, and more than likely because they feel the wives are "the new woman in their son's life'...even though mother and son do NOT share beds together. That'd be wrong.
If I recall correctly, the show got really redundant and it changed networks. After the change, some of the characters (Harriet and a couple others) didn't come back, so it lasted one season on the new station before being cancelled.
Wow! Judy actually spoke (lol). I see the Winslows lived in an apartment in this clip. That show sure did make a lot of changes while it was on the air.
Judy spoke a lot, in the first season. And I only remember them living in a house on "Family Matters". However, they were just moving during an episode of "Perfect strangers".
That's not too unusual. A pilot is made to sell the show to the network and sometimes there's a space of time from when it's filmed and the show goes into production. So it could be an actor is no longer available or didn't test well.
Well, that is true that they didn't often air the pilot with one actor and then continue the series with another. I guess they didn't think anyone would notice the child was different. I know on the series Meego they inexplicable changed the teenage boy with another actor . . . of course that show didn't last more than six episodes!
Actually, Full House replaced the actor playing Danny Tanner after the pilot, choosing Bob Saget instead of the original actor they had chosen. The original guy was pretty bad.
Well, that one is a little different since the pilot of FH was never aired. According to the commentary on the first season DVDs, they actually liked John Posey as Danny. He just wasn't available by the time the show went into production.
I didn't consider that. I didn't know that Posey was replaced because he wasn't available. I thought John Posey was a terrible Danny Tanner, though it could be just because I'm so used to Bob Saget in that role. The whole thing seemed very awkward though, and he didn't sell me on his character as a recently widowed father of three. I'm not too sure the show would have been as successful with him in the role.
@Furienna abc was notorious for that. Abc's Roseanne(which aired in the 8pm central time format) changed David Jacob Conner(DJ) after just one show(I'm sure there was a dispute with the parents. Roseanne and Coach(which aired afterwards) both stayed in their time slots from beginning to end(88-97) I wonder if it's because Roseanne demanded for it to be that way(she was a bossy cow honcho to work for seriously(
Because sadly Perfect Strangers was on its way out as Family Matters was going forward. The original four shows for TGIF: Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, Full House, and Step by Step.
I would've enjoyed seeing "Perfect Strangers" continue into the nineties instead of end as it did. Then again, I haven't seen all eight seasons. Only clips and a few full episodes. Do you believe that "Perfect Strangers" could've continued or do you think that it completed its 8 year run with graceful humor and perfect timing?
@VaultMasterDBT yes. And the show featured Heather Locklear(TJ Hooker, Dynasty, Rich Men Single Women, Melrose Place, Spin City, JAG, Lord knows what else) and Holland Taylor(Bosom Buddies) it ran during the 90-91 season.
lolol...It makes me want to watch "Family Matters" again!
"And deliver us from evil...even if it comes walking right through that door..." I was really expecting Steve Urkel to come shuffling through the doorway! It would've been great timing! When did he show up on "Family Matters"? And why is it that Balki and Larry were never apart of "Family Matters". I do remember that Mark Linn Baker was for a short time as the curmudgenous boss but not Balki...How come?
Steve didn't join the show until after half the first season. He wasn't supossed to in more than one episode, but he was so popular, that they kept him on the show.
Harriet went up to her boss and talked to him in the second episode of "Family Matters". Are you sure he wasn't at "Perfect strangers"?
This is a mish mash actually. The clips of the old set are from the pilot. When they were making introductions they were on the set used to film the first season. The kitchen in the pilot was also different, and a different actress potrayed Judy. However during the introduction, Judy was Jamie Foxworth, but this wasn't the case in the original pilot. I didn't know that.
Furienna 4 years ago
Well, that one is a little different since the pilot of FH was never aired. According to the commentary on the first season DVDs, they actually liked John Posey as Danny. He just wasn't available by the time the show went into production.

I didn't consider that. I didn't know that Posey was replaced because he wasn't available. I thought John Posey was a terrible Danny Tanner, though it could be just because I'm so used to Bob Saget in that role. The whole thing seemed very awkward though, and he didn't sell me on his character as a recently widowed father of three. I'm not too sure the show would have been as successful with him in the role.

@wiganix Of course "Saggy" got on my nerves something awful. And so did Jesse. I liked Rebecca.

DJ was a different kid in the first episode of Roseanne
drinklime 3 years ago
Really?
Furienna 3 years ago

@TheCheshireofQuidget oh I was gonna say, while on the subject, Step By Step(a successful one as well) was added to the format.

Actually, the original fourth TGIF sitcom was Going Places, which was cancelled after one season. Step By Step arrived the season after.

TheCheshireofQuidget 4 years ago
I remember that Mark Linn Baker appeared on this show as Harriet's schovanist boss on a few eps. but not as Larry.

Steve didn't join the show until after half the first season. He wasn't supossed to in more than one episode, but he was so popular, that they kept him on the show.
Harriet went up to her boss and talked to him in the second episode of "Family Matters". Are you sure he wasn't at "Perfect strangers"?
