Other drivers thought that Purley was Williamson standing next to his 'own' car, the marshalls couldn't do anything since they weren't wearing fireproof clothing. The emergency crew screwed up, entering the track on the wrong side etc. Race still kept going during the fire as you can see.

This isn't the whole story - David Purley stopped his car and tried to save Williamson; the crowd tried to climb fences to help but were held back by security with dogs: they didn't "watch him burn." Williamson died of smoke inhalation when Purley couldn't get his car turned over.

yep, 8 minutes to arrive to help. In those days, safety was a joke. It was through the efforts of people like Jackie Stewart that tracks and cars are so much safer and medical help i always near by.

The organization didn't really knew what happened, and didn't stop the race. As a result, the emergency services had to travel almost a whole lap (one-way traffic) next to the track, because the other drivers drove at full speed.

Back then, emergency services weren't on stand by and the marshalls didn't have flame proof suits or fire extinguishers. Today....seems like the emergency crew is out there before the car even stops. Crews are all in flame proof suits and there are plenty of fire extinguishers available. Unfortunately drivers had to pay with their lives before changes were made.

This may be the worst circumstances in which a driver has UNNECESSARILY died but the worst accident has to be the one that resulted in the death of Tom Pryce and fire marshall, Jansen van Buhren.

@erwinruys Depends on how you look at it... This is a horrible accident because Roger was unhurt inside the car and died of the fire... In the Pryce and fireman incident it was a quick and painless incident (or at least I hope so), but it looked very horrific... both incidents are horrific in their way and in my opinion hard to say which one was worse.... but this is just my opinion...

Many F1 drivers of the past contributed and lobbied towards the safer Formula 1 which we have today, even Senna himself understood the great importance of a drivers safety and spoke often about improving it. If we had the cars of old, Kubica would have died in Canada, maybe Webber would have also died in Valencia. If you really want F1 to be that way, I must say you are one sadistic bastard.
