Other drivers thought that Purley was Williamson standing next to his 'own' car, the marshalls couldn't do anything since they weren't wearing fireproof clothing. The emergency crew screwed up, entering the track on the wrong side etc. Race still kept going during the fire as you can see.
This isn't the whole story - David Purley stopped his car and tried to save Williamson; the crowd tried to climb fences to help but were held back by security with dogs: they didn't "watch him burn." Williamson died of smoke inhalation when Purley couldn't get his car turned over.
It was a bad one.. A realy bad one.. But I personaly find the crash of Tom Pryce and the marhall that died there the worst one ever. But both accidents where realy sick..
Roger Williamson was one of the most senseless deaths in F1 history. Not to say any other driver death should be minimized, but he could, and should have been saved. Such a tragedy.
yep, 8 minutes to arrive to help. In those days, safety was a joke. It was through the efforts of people like Jackie Stewart that tracks and cars are so much safer and medical help i always near by.
The organization didn't really knew what happened, and didn't stop the race. As a result, the emergency services had to travel almost a whole lap (one-way traffic) next to the track, because the other drivers drove at full speed.
Back then, emergency services weren't on stand by and the marshalls didn't have flame proof suits or fire extinguishers. Today....seems like the emergency crew is out there before the car even stops. Crews are all in flame proof suits and there are plenty of fire extinguishers available. Unfortunately drivers had to pay with their lives before changes were made.
8 minutes to arrive? really? how does a dangerous sport get the green light to go if there aren't that many safety workers to arrive on the scene of a crash in a more respectable amount of time? when bad crashes happen, time is everything
This may be the worst circumstances in which a driver has UNNECESSARILY died but the worst accident has to be the one that resulted in the death of Tom Pryce and fire marshall, Jansen van Buhren.
@erwinruys Depends on how you look at it... This is a horrible accident because Roger was unhurt inside the car and died of the fire... In the Pryce and fireman incident it was a quick and painless incident (or at least I hope so), but it looked very horrific... both incidents are horrific in their way and in my opinion hard to say which one was worse.... but this is just my opinion...
@rubenick I agree with you on that one. But Roger did not die of the flames, only of the smoke (which isn´t the nicest way to go but still better than to be burned).
@NOXXism There was a Fire-Truck only 100meters away but they were not allowed to drive against the way of racing, so they had to go around the whole track. Sorry for my english, hope you understand.
@NOXXism amen...But you put everyone else on the track in hella serious danger if you drive that firetruck toward the flow of racing(Just imagine a car hitting something that solid at over 150mph...It could/would kill the driver, all of the firetruck crew, and probably a few spectators)
@NOXXism Slowing down in a F1 car is a relative term, those closing speeds are still horrendous. The safety procedures they have now hopefully mean something like this will never happen again.
@NOXXism I'm sorry, but how does death and the potential for severe injuries improve a sport? Many F1 drivers of the past contributed and lobbied towards the safer Formula 1 which we have today, even Senna himself understood the great importance of a drivers safety and spoke often about improving it. If we had the cars of old, Kubica would have died in Canada, maybe Webber would have also died in Valencia. If you really want F1 to be that way, I must say you are one sadistic bastard.
@ROONTANG You misunderstood what I said. Senna would have not liked what his death made to the sport. What I said is that I miss the times where F1 cars looked like F1 cars, low, wide and short. These cars are ugly, they're full of electronics, and you can drive them without take the hands off the steering wheel
this has got to be the worst way to die and yes another driver did try to help him out with no avail he heard williamson screaming while he burned to death very disturbing accident
WTF are people on about below. Fucking idiots, its not fake look at the "grand prix the killer years" documentary you cunts. He was a well known driver. so FUCK OFF!!!!!!! Wish you'd all go and get burnt alive.
This is in very poor taste and is in fact a fatal F1 crash many years before this idiot who posted it was born. Judging by the stupidity I can only assume it is a child. As Kubica was seriously injured today people are genuinly interested to hear what happened.
