Hey I have a qestion okay so I am deaf and got a choclear implant back in 08 I used to be able to have a conversation with using sign and i stopped siging so i could learn to hear I still have the ability to understand sign but it has been 5 years since i was able to carry out sign in a conversation how long will it take me to be able to commuticate with sign again
I think the concept that it's not just direct translation is hard for learners of all languages. It might be harder for ASL students because of the assumption that ASL is somehow based on English than for students of a foreign language, I don't know.
That is really great, i highly suggest bringing a group of students to a deaf school among the US, it would be a really good exposure. I am a Gallaudet University student, I graduated from Illinois School for the Deaf. I have always seen ASL classes from other schools come by just to see the deaf environment and such. It will be a neat experience for them. :)
@Skipper3456 I'm a senior in HS now and my school offers ASL 1-3 it's a very interesting course especially the song project that we are doing, I feel that every school should offer it. Which there's no deaf community around here so it feels good learning about the culture.
takes a while for the newbies to loosen up eh? :) Sometimes same is true for us oldies but it's so much more fun and usually better qualitiy signing when we do :)
A couple friends of mine recently terped Pat Benetar's concert at Universal. Missed the first terp but sure she did great and the 2nd one did awesome including this song. :)
I went to school for interpreting but I actually just teach ASL for HS now. I try HARD to get students to understand it's more than just signing English words! :) Thanks for the encouragement....I'm still learning and growing myself.
Who isn't still learning?! I interpreter for 2 3rd grade boys and we use the Fairview Program ... so many of their classmates can sign fluently to them. That's pretty exciting. Don't you love the feeling when they just " get " it?

Wow! I really love that! So you teach high school? Or are you an interpreter, or both?
You were very conceptually accurate!!! Way to go! Teenagers can be hard to stand in front of and do that sometimes! I think it was wonderful!
