Django Reinhardt et le Quintette du Hot Club de France, avec Stéphane Grappelli Stéphane Grappelli (vln); Django Reinhardt (g solo); Joseph Reinhardt, Eugène Vées, Pierre “Baro” Ferret (g); Emmanuel Soudieux (b); Beryl Davis (vcl)
This group also recorded HCQ Strut (instrumental).
Don't Worry 'Bout Me (Davis vocal) & The Man I Love (instrumental) recorded at this session, but Grappelly is on piano and Pierre Baro Ferret added (rhy-g). All tunes recorded in London, 25 AUG 1939. Mai Beryl Davis vivre éternellement! :I:
@Amberjack1973 ...Beryl died at friday 28th October 2011 in the age of 87 years...she was only 15 years when she did this song with Django! R.I.P. Beryl. Grtz, Aad
You can hear how much an influence Django was on Les Paul and Mary Ford. Some of those licks are so fast and clear that he has a mandolin feel here. What a musician - thanks for posting
Wow, I can't believe this is the first time I've heard this recording!... The clarity and tone of Django's guitar really stands out. I thought I'd heard everything he recorded. I guess I need to keep searching!
Beryl Davis is (last time I checked, an hour ago) is still very much alive and well. She has been a popular performer in the UK and the US ever since the 30's.
You can really hear the influence Django and Grappeli had on American Western Swing music in this recording (especially when they play those little call and response lines to her vocals) Great record. Thanks for putting this one up.
@zalman595 Wait a tic...American swing had call and response long before HCQ...I love Django, but I think those guys learned that from a peripheral figure by the name of Louis Armstrong!?!
I hear ya.. I wouldn't consider myself a Francophile -- more of a Djangophile. If it came off that I was intimating that these guys invented call and response, then I didn't express myself well enough. I was trying to point out the similarity between this "jazz" style and many American "country" styles. Some see it as an either/or situation. When you consider the effect Django had on seminal figures like Atkins and Les Paul, it's clear his influence wasn't only on jazz.
Great Compilation! I saw Beryl Davis for the first time playing with John Jorgenson ans she is still amazing. BTW, the last time I saw them together, she sang this very song.
You have great taste, nutloaf. This is my favourite music track right now. Beryl Davis was only 15 years old when she did this recording with Django in 1939.

Sad she passed on the day Ireland's first Gypsy Jazz festival [Cloughtoberfest] opened.

Certainly I couldn't agree more...BTW Django was miraculous, but a lot of these Gypsy Jazz francophiles seem to think he came out of nowhere!
