after watching 2 seasons of dexter in less than a week, i'm so used to seeing him as a self concious person not letting anyone into his mind and being so careful of what he is doing. and then seeing this.
MCH is very much a triple threat - amazing actor, dancer AND singer! Watched 6ft under before Dexter and was worried that I would only see him as `David`` - well 2 minutes through Dexter and I was hooked - wonderful actor!
I find this hilarious and amazing at the same time. It's really well-done and MCH is surprisingly good at singing, but the fact that I knew MCH as Dexter beforehand and thus tend to see him as the character just makes it hilarious to watch. :P
i just started watching this show and saw this episode yesterday. LOVE IT. love david. michael c hall is brilliant. one day David grows up to become a bulky hot serial killer named Dexter ;P
Thank you so much for posting this. I've been trying to find it to send to a friend. We seen him do a Sammy Davis Jr, dance number in the movie Gamer and I've been trying to find the Sammy Davis Jr. dance number from SFU.

You completely missed the point of the "debate" (though that word is subject to interpretation since it was just intelligent folks bashing their heads against a brick wall). The discussion wasn't about Hall, it was about the fact that some idiot claimed that no straight actor could play a homosexual character unless they were either secretly gay or bi or had no self respect and only wanted the money....which is a grossly ignorant comment on all counts. I couldn't care less about Hall's sexuality
After further reading of the ongoing discussion, i have come to the theory that perhaps Typhoon's faulty arguments stem from his assumption that everyone shares his opinion on homosexuality, which obviously isn't the case. Yea... but but but but.. Come on. Acting is acting but only somebody that's actually gay can lip-lock with another guy which I was just scarred by. I can;t get over it.
It's sad to see there are such losers out there. Do you know that there are straight men who do hardcore gay porn just because the pay is incredible? Or do you think that the actress playing Deb in "Dexter" is into men twice her age just because her character hooks up with an older man in the show? Is Hall a real serial killer? You're disgustingly ignorant. It's called "acting" for a reason, and the best actors are the ones who convincingly play characters entirely different from themselves.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No no no no... That's not the point here. Look what you said here "the pay is incredible". That's what I was disappointed in. If he did it just for the pay, then he might as well be a male prostitute.
That is the ENTIRE point here, hillbilly. You claimed that no actor could have sex scenes with another guy unless he was actually gay. The porn comment was to dispprove that idiotic statement. And no, it's not prostitution, how childish are you? There is a huge difference between doing porn or being a prostitute and being an actor creating a character that happens to have same-sex love scenes. If it pays well to PLAY that CHARACTER, good for him.
Also, Hall is an ACTOR. Actors need to make money like anyone else, it's got nothing to do with the sexuality of the roles. It's a JOB. Hall played David for both the money and because he's damn good and wanted to depict an interesting character on a good series. No different from every single actor in the industry. Unless you're just starting out, you don't take roles to go broke, you take roles that you both like and get paid well for.
Thank you for clarifying that, StygianFilms. Some people are just so narrow-minded. I'm a heterosexual girl who's had a boyfriend for almost 2 years, and I wouldn't mind playing a lesbian in a show or a movie if that's what the part called for. If you're a committed actor, nothing will get in your way - including the sexual orientation of the character.
Same here, I'm a straight female and though the idea of hooking up with another woman is extremely unappealing to me as an individual, I would certainly do it if it was part of an interesting character or storyline. And if that's the case, I would give it my all to make it believable. Hall's sexuality doesn't matter, but as far as anyone knows, he's straight. So if he's comfortable playing a gay man, it only demonstrates his strength as an actor and comfort with his own sexuality.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No wonder you're getting so defensive... Listen. I had so much admiration for the guy as Dexter. I had so much respect for him as an actor that it was unbelievable. How do you think it felt to then see him degrade himself by making out with another guy. And it wasn't some quick shit either. It was like a whole entire love scene with another dude. All I'm saying is, I thought the guy had more self-respect than that.
So you consider it degrading and lacking self respect for an actor to portray a different sexuality? Guess you've never seen Queer as Folk, half the cast is as straight as the other half is gay. And they all have graphic sex scenes every episode. Hmm, I guess they're "degrading" themselves by being open enough to play great characters in an incredible series, huh?
How about Kevin Spacey? He's gay...I guess you consider it degrading that he's had many sex scenes with women. How gross. I thought he had more self respect than that!
Basically what you're saying is, you're a homophobic idiot? Okay, point taken. Thanks for the clarification.
By the way...not continuing further with this conversation. You've well enough shown that you represent exactly what's wrong with the losers of society. I can't imagine there's anything left to say. You either desperately need to grow up, get a life, or stop humping your bible and/or KKK manual...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That's pretty insulting especially considering how wrong it is. Come on. You're saying I'm not acting mature but you're the one expressing your opinion through insults. I never said anything directed towards so then what are you doing?... Look; if a man is straight, the only way he'd be able to agree to a role like that which includes sex scenes with other men would be for money. Continuation in next comment..
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That's a good motivator but the point is, if the person is willing to go through with it, he's putting money on a higher pedestal than himself. It's not very noble and I just thought higher of him.
Listen, you're entitled to your oppinion, but you're not getting an important point here. He's not only doing it for the money. Michael C. Hall is a big-time actor, and was probably rolling in cash before Six Feet Under even began filming. One major step in improving your acting is to take on a roll that is the complete opposite of yourself. If that means playing a person of a different sexual orientation, so be it!
It expands your experience as and actor and also causes you to step out of yourself even more, thus making the character even more believable. He obviously put everything into being David Fisher by stepping out of himself because he was completely believable as a gay man, and that makes him a committed actor, not a greedy, self-degrading loser.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well, that still doesn't change the fact that there were countless other ways he could've "expanded his experience as an actor". If what you say is true though and in a way he wanted to take the role, rather than he was forced to because of his situation, then that means that he's just secretly bisexual and wanted to experience it with, clearly, an acceptable excuse. If that's the case, then w/e. I don't have anything against him if he's gay, but I do have something against him if he isn't.
... You're disturbed by him convincingly playing a gay man but not a serial killer? Nice POV you have going there.
If the role is good, it doesn't *matter* what sexual orientation the character is. It obviously factors in and straight men would have to deal with playing gay (gay men playing straight as well), but at the end of the day, people are people. You've got some seriously warped thinking going on.
I don't normally stoop to insults but you fully deserve them. You're an ignorant bigot, plain and simple. An idiot. I hate to resort to name calling, but it's called for in this case. By your logic, Hall is also secretly psychopathic and has dark desires to torture and kill people, which is why he took on the role of Dexter...to experience that side of himself without getting into trouble. I guess that doesn't bother you though. It would only bother you if he WASN'T a real serial killer, right?
Your reasoning makes no sense at all. I don't care that you're insulting Hall. He's not my friend or family, so it means nothing to me if you approve of his career choices or not. What bothers me is that that you're just a very poor specimen of the human race, and a prime example of the extreme stupidity and ignorance that exists in our society today.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
First of all, I never even insulted Michael C. Hall. Second, that's stupid what you said because you missed the point of what I've been saying completely. The fact that he played a role of a gay guy wouldn't matter to me if he wouldn't have actual gay experiences along with them. As I said, if he's straight which I'm being told here that he is, the only reason he's doing it is for the money. What I'm saying is that I think it's despicable to completely throw away your pride for money.
Wow, every time that I think you can't possibly top the idiocy of your last post, you do. You've gotten a number of people, myself included, already saying that he most likely did it because he likes the role. Your logic is ridiculous and childish. You don't need to be gay to play an interesting gay character. Furthermore, you conveniently skipped the part of my post making comparisons to his roles in Dexter and Kevin Spacey playing straight men, etc. You clearly don't get the concept of acting.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
OK! So he liked the role?... Ok, if he LIKED the role, then he's either gay or bisexual. That's fine with me. You clearly don't understand the concept of self-respect if this isn't the case. Look, all I've stated was that it made me sad and disappointed of this occurrence. I never even said anything bad about him but right away, you started cursing me. As I've mentioned, Michael C. Hall is an amazing actor but I thought of him as a person more highly than I do now for already said reasons...
Oh, so if he LIKED the role (and he must, because he's a good enough actor to be able to take his pick from plenty of roles) then he must also like playing a serial killer.
So Michael C Hall is a bisexual money-whore with secretly wants to kill people? Um, yeah.
Such as it is, you've proven a hundred percent that you're nothing but an ignorant hillbilly who doesn't get the definition of "actor", is closed minded and therefore thinks that his personal closed minded beliefs should fit how everyone else feels as well, and is very stupidly stubborn. I'm embarrassed for having bothered responding to you as many times as I have. I will not be responding again. You're far too absurd to take seriously.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Omg... Stop going crazy. I want you to explain to me but you're too busy name-calling. I fucking want you to change my mind because I'd prefer to keep my respect for him, especially considering the third season of Dexter is on the way. Maybe there really is something I don't understand but as it stands now, I really don't see "acting" as an excuse.
If you want your mind to be changed, then stop fighting back with your questionable logic! StygianFilms is making extremely valid points and you're just refusing to listen. Please open up your mind - that's all I ask.
jecafish, don't bother. This guy is clearly a troll. If everyone just ignores him, he'll eventually wither up and die. By blatantly ignoring and disregarding all points that we make, and stubbornly repeating the same mindless drivel over and over, he's clearly trying hard to be annoying and is looking to get a reaction. Just pretend that he doesn't exist. At this point, it's quite obvious that he's just a troll. Or severely mentally handicapped. Either way, just pretend he doesn't exist.
So what you're saying, is that a straight man acting as a homosexual man on a T.V. show is shameful? How so? Are you homophobic? Maybe Hall has respect for gay people. x_x Your statements on that argument make no sense, because in reality, you really don't know what's going on in his head.
Typhoon i think you need to do some research on acting in order to understand that actors can choose a role for many possible reasons. In this case, we can't know for sure without asking Michael C. Hall. I don't understand why his ability to portray same-sex intimacy would lessen your respect for him. If anything it should increase your respect considering he IS straight and is dedicated/professional enough to do it for the sake of his craft, the show etc. Michael C. Hall is amazing. Period.
i don't think it matters if the character he plays is gay or not. michael c. hall is an AMAZING actor, and he totally pulls off the character he is portraying in every show or movie he does. and he's straight in real life...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
God, you still are an opiniated boring cow. And how do you know he's not gay? Have you slept with him or are you just hopeful that you will one day. Yeah, right - too much to ask for on your part.
dude. he is such a good actor that i've only known him from Dexter and this just blew my mind. he is either gay or a serial killer, or just a really great actor.
they should right a musical to dexter! :D OMG! it would be aMaZiNg!!! I do have to admit... it looks funny seeing him sing when i'm used to seeing him kill! hahahaha but he's great at it! meaning both of corse! :D
Yeah, before his run on SFU he starred as the emcee in Cabaret! Can you imagine?! I think what he said in an interview was: "Everything I opened up for Cabaret, I closed up for David." Guess this one scene was like a tribute. :)
"I was thinking. Is not a person allowed to think?" Gosh, I'm so David when I say things like that. I'm a horrible person. LOL

I'm a heterosexual girl who's had a boyfriend for almost 2 years, and I wouldn't mind playing a lesbian in a show or a movie if that's what the part called for. If you're a committed actor, nothing will get in your way - including the sexual orientation of the character.
jecafish 3 years ago 5
Same here, I'm a straight female and though the idea of hooking up with another woman is extremely unappealing to me as an individual, I would certainly do it if it was part of an interesting character or storyline. And if that's the case, I would give it my all to make it believable. Hall's sexuality doesn't matter, but as far as anyone knows, he's straight. So if he's comfortable playing a gay man, it only demonstrates his strength as an actor and comfort with his own sexuality.

Typhoon859 3 years ago
So you consider it degrading and lacking self respect for an actor to portray a different sexuality? Guess you've never seen Queer as Folk, half the cast is as straight as the other half is gay. And they all have graphic sex scenes every episode. Hmm, I guess they're "degrading" themselves by being open enough to play great characters in an incredible series, huh?
StygianFilms 3 years ago 3
How about Kevin Spacey? He's gay...I guess you consider it degrading that he's had many sex scenes with women. How gross. I thought he had more self respect than that!
Basically what you're saying is, you're a homophobic idiot? Okay, point taken. Thanks for the clarification.
StygianFilms 3 years ago 5
By the way...not continuing further with this conversation. You've well enough shown that you represent exactly what's wrong with the losers of society. I can't imagine there's anything left to say. You either desperately need to grow up, get a life, or stop humping your bible and/or KKK manual...

That's a good motivator but the point is, if the person is willing to go through with it, he's putting money on a higher pedestal than himself. It's not very noble and I just thought higher of him.
Typhoon859 3 years ago
Listen, you're entitled to your oppinion, but you're not getting an important point here. He's not only doing it for the money. Michael C. Hall is a big-time actor, and was probably rolling in cash before Six Feet Under even began filming. One major step in improving your acting is to take on a roll that is the complete opposite of yourself. If that means playing a person of a different sexual orientation, so be it!
jecafish 3 years ago 2
It expands your experience as and actor and also causes you to step out of yourself even more, thus making the character even more believable. He obviously put everything into being David Fisher by stepping out of himself because he was completely believable as a gay man, and that makes him a committed actor, not a greedy, self-degrading loser.
jecafish 3 years ago 4

Well, that still doesn't change the fact that there were countless other ways he could've "expanded his experience as an actor". If what you say is true though and in a way he wanted to take the role, rather than he was forced to because of his situation, then that means that he's just secretly bisexual and wanted to experience it with, clearly, an acceptable excuse. If that's the case, then w/e. I don't have anything against him if he's gay, but I do have something against him if he isn't.
Typhoon859 3 years ago
You've got some seriously warped thinking going on.
ginandironic 3 years ago 4
I don't normally stoop to insults but you fully deserve them. You're an ignorant bigot, plain and simple. An idiot. I hate to resort to name calling, but it's called for in this case. By your logic, Hall is also secretly psychopathic and has dark desires to torture and kill people, which is why he took on the role of Dexter...to experience that side of himself without getting into trouble. I guess that doesn't bother you though. It would only bother you if he WASN'T a real serial killer, right?
StygianFilms 3 years ago 2
Your reasoning makes no sense at all. I don't care that you're insulting Hall. He's not my friend or family, so it means nothing to me if you approve of his career choices or not. What bothers me is that that you're just a very poor specimen of the human race, and a prime example of the extreme stupidity and ignorance that exists in our society today.

Typhoon859 3 years ago
Wow, every time that I think you can't possibly top the idiocy of your last post, you do. You've gotten a number of people, myself included, already saying that he most likely did it because he likes the role. Your logic is ridiculous and childish. You don't need to be gay to play an interesting gay character. Furthermore, you conveniently skipped the part of my post making comparisons to his roles in Dexter and Kevin Spacey playing straight men, etc. You clearly don't get the concept of acting.

Typhoon859 3 years ago
Oh, so if he LIKED the role (and he must, because he's a good enough actor to be able to take his pick from plenty of roles) then he must also like playing a serial killer.
So Michael C Hall is a bisexual money-whore with secretly wants to kill people? Um, yeah.
clairebbbear 3 years ago
For your analogy to be correct in terms of what I was saying, that means that all I did was call Michael C. Hall gay, which I didn't...
Typhoon859 3 years ago
Such as it is, you've proven a hundred percent that you're nothing but an ignorant hillbilly who doesn't get the definition of "actor", is closed minded and therefore thinks that his personal closed minded beliefs should fit how everyone else feels as well, and is very stupidly stubborn. I'm embarrassed for having bothered responding to you as many times as I have. I will not be responding again. You're far too absurd to take seriously.

Typhoon859 3 years ago
If you want your mind to be changed, then stop fighting back with your questionable logic! StygianFilms is making extremely valid points and you're just refusing to listen. Please open up your mind - that's all I ask.
jecafish 3 years ago 2
jecafish, don't bother.
StygianFilms 3 years ago 2
So what you're saying, is that a straight man acting as a homosexual man on a T.V. show is shameful? How so? Are you homophobic? Maybe Hall has respect for gay people. x_x Your statements on that argument make no sense, because in reality, you really don't know what's going on in his head.
KieIsCrazy 3 years ago
Typhoon i think you need to do some research on acting in order to understand that actors can choose a role for many possible reasons. In this case, we can't know for sure without asking Michael C. Hall. I don't understand why his ability to portray same-sex intimacy would lessen your respect for him. If anything it should increase your respect considering he IS straight and is dedicated/professional enough to do it for the sake of his craft, the show etc. Michael C. Hall is amazing. Period.
JJPhingaz 3 years ago
i don't think it matters if the character he plays is gay or not. michael c. hall is an AMAZING actor, and he totally pulls off the character he is portraying in every show or movie he does. and he's straight in real life...
