Instead of only western philosophers and poets he should have also included an even deeper study with George Ohsawa's macrobiotics. (five thousand year old eastern yin-yang wisdom).
He would have been less foolish and better prepared.
The distress note below was purposely not part of the movie.
Attention possible visitors. "S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak too hike out of here. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August ?"
He screwed up and no longer though of himself as the free-spirit Alex Supertramp in the end.
@ALLinALLgood you are wrong, go back and watch that part, they don't shout it out, but it is there, and even if they didn't the movie still is amazing and Chris understood more before he died then i think most people do right now. Please love instead of hate.
@redhorse891 I spent a year hitchhiking round europe and america. living of my guitar. only making enough money for food, and occasionaly beer :)
no to dissimilar from mccandles. but i didnt go into the wild. mhe discovered that happiness only real when shared. i discovered that too, while hitching though ireland.
i once thought it cheesy to say a film inspired me, but now i say it with pride.
This is great, I didn't know there was a movie about this, I'm an English teacher and this story appears in one of the books.. I'll tell my students to see it.

Alex Supertramp wished he never killed the moose. His life's worst tragedy. So Sean Penn then kills another moose to dramatize this worst tragedy. The real Christopher McCandless would've been heartbroken by the gratuitous murder of this spectacular animal for a movie. Sean Penn's self-aggrandizing is exactly what McCandless was running away from! Emile Hirsch really have to starve to death to dramatize McCandless' death. RESPECT ALEX SUPERTRAMP - DO NOT SEE THIS FILM!
you looser, they don't have to use a real moose for a movie shoot. they never hurt animals for movie shoots. don't u see the disclaimers?? and just for that u are appealing to people not to watch the movie?? get a life man!
So the real life Alex Supertramp wrote that he wished he never shot the moose. It was his life's worst tragedy. So Sean Penn then kills a real moose to dramatize the guy's "worst tragedy." Sean is an arrogant self-centered asshole for doing that. I bet he'd have Emile Hirsch really starve to death if it got Sean attention. This movie is HORRIBLE. Do not watch it people! Trust me!!!
Ive read the book a LOT, and im reading walden and into thin air rite now.
im an eighth grade gifted program and we have to read biographies. asking my teacher if i could read into the wild, she says "the point in this project is reading a biography about somebody who had a real IMPACT on the world, not just some hippy who hiked to alaska and died three weeks later." unbeleivable...i hate her. chris mccandless impacted my life soo much, in a positive way... i wish i couldve known him
I am about half way thru the book. It is incredibly moving! I am determined to go and see some of the places that are talked about in the book. Grand Canyon, etc.etc. and look at them thru Alex Supertramp's eyes. I am 63 recently widowed and this young mans life has just impacted mine.
I want to see this movie so bad!!! I havent read the book but I live in Alaska and the bus is an actual turist attraction (For thoes who dont know.) and you can hike up and see it. Its pretty cool but they have been talking about this movie on the local news and now I'm excited for it to come out.
Read the book 10 years ago.. saw the film yesterday.. went back and saw it again today.. great job Mr. Penn.. great job Mr. Holbrook.. and everyone.. lovely..
I saw this film at a special showing in Seattle. It was the most rewarding thought provoking movie I have ever seen. Love it. Wonderful. Gotta see it! I'm goin again. AT least 2 more times.
He dies while living in the old abandon bus in Alaska, not riding on A bus. He eats moldy seeds In The Wild and as a result starves to death. The book is fantastic, but I liked "INTO THIN AIR" by Jon K. even better.
I can't wait to see this movie...I was in the graduation scene. Look for a long curly haired blonde wearing an orange sweater across from Christopher's parents. Sean Peen was great!
I squatted in Bus 42 during winter and minus 51 thermometer readings. No big whoop. I doubt Sean Penn will do justice to the book which is among the best non fiction books of the last century, but filming in the actual locations from the story is a start in the right direction.
I met Sean Penn(the award winning director, and actor) when I was in Heely last month. The were up filming the summer segment in Alaska, and he stayed in the same INN as me. I got a picture and autograph too. I'm not sure if Vince and Emile was there though, but it was funny to see him in dinky little Heely Alaska, and I live in Kodiak, AK!
does anyone knows the name of that song right on the very beginning?
