Still not THAT soft, I think you can improve with better diffuser material because the tube concept itself should work nicely. Try something more opaque than that, a lot of light must be passing directly
Thank you so much for the examples at the end. I am new to all this and it's kind of aggravating when I don't really know what the hell people are talking about or what their goal in making these DIY projects. Great video and thank you so much.
No wonder your photos are only "Kinda good"! 100W light bulb? Gonna be a hunchback in no time carrying a power supply when doing outdoor macro work. Over a month later and still no "spoof"- you might want to trade in your disposable camera for some big boy toys there kiddo!
Great tutorial!
I actually splurged this week and picked up a couple Zeikos Slaves and intend on mounting them much like the Canon or Nikon Macro Twin Light. For the $20 total I think it is worth it.
LMFAO!!! What in the hell is this thing???It looks like a crack pipe,he IS ON CRACK!!!
WOW!! I'VE SEEN SOME PRETTY MESSED UP SHIT IN MY LIFE BUT THIS TAKES THE CAKE!!I YOU CAN GET THE SAME EFFECT BY JUST USING AN ADJUSTABLE LAMP AND A 100W BULB!! YOU'RE TAKING THE LONG WAY AROUND THE BARN DUDE,AND YOU WASTED TWO BEERS!! MAJOR PARTY FOUL!!
Jungle?? hmmm...I didn't know they had plastic slinky's in the jungle. You must live in a prestty interesting world where plastic toys survive and are all over the jungle!
Alright, let me continue my "dorkness" so my hits/views keep going up (thank you btw). I suggest you invest in a $700 Macro Twin Lite from Canon or Nikon or what ever model camera you use.
well after all of my freinds and I got done laughing at you we decided that I should make a paradoy of your video. When I get home fromt the studio tonight i'll make a quick one.Keep your eyes open for it.!!Should be finished around 9pm tonight.
@kindagoodphoto After I got done laughing at your horrible attempt at an insult, I decided to look at your videos. Surprise, I found none! Who wold have thought? Anyways keep working on your internet bravery, it needs a little touching up. Regards. @motleypixel Thanks for showing a great alternative to expensive rigs that most of us can create at home. Very informative!
Obviously you are NOT a photographer, and have no knowledge whatsoever of MACRO photography.
So it's almost pointless to reply to your post.
BUT, since you're so insulting I'll go ahead:
For field macro photography you need a portable light source, with strong, pure white, concentrated bursts. YOU CAN'T get that from a regular bulb, which is YELLOW light btw. You CAN'T carry around a power source for the bulb and it's too weak anyway to be any good (compared to a flash).
this is getting repetitious, lets save some time and both agree that you're a moron and leave it at that.if it is so pointless to comment on my comment then why do you keep doing it?are you trying to be cool and the big man by getting the last word in?ok,that would impress alot of people wouldn't it,you would be mr.super cool if that happened.well anyway,i'm going to save some time here.
Why not try a Pringles (crisps) Tube with the opaque cap on one end (to diffuse light) and cut the other end off to fit on flash? spray inside of tube with matt white acrylic paint too.
Anyone trying homemade solutions to avoid dishing out heavy cash for a twin speedlight solution will come up with weird looking rigs :)
I recommend you give optic fiber some thought.
Take a look at the Lester & Dine dental macro photography flash kits. After studying them, I've come to the conclusion that they use an optic fiber from the flash head to the poin and ring units.
A major advantage with this is a much lighter and manageable rig. Also, an almost unexisting light loss.
nice... it's just hard for me to get long cans over here.... but the idea really rocks... am sure once I find the material am gonna build up something similar....
why not put an omnibounce directly on the external flash unit (430ex) and then bent the light with the can construction. The omnibounce softens the light at the source.
Excellent video. I saw LordV on Flickr and was thinking of trying this

Well first, they weren't my beers and yes I did waste them aka didn't drink them...I poured them down the drain where that foul piss water belongs.
You go right ahead and tote your adjustable lamp, 100W bulb and extension cord around the jungle.

Doesn't matter what it looks like, the only thing people will be looking at is the final product- the images you take.

Cool. You could take the diffuser off the side can and use a reflector to push more light into the shaded area ..... Just an idea :o)
