  • Great song, great band!!!

  • Great cover/homage but Slade's harmonies were much better.

  • OK, I thought I knew Slade, but can´t recall this 1 at all! Pretty good, though.

  • Dan Akyroyd on drums, ladies and gentlemen.

  • I love that Rick slides the riff to "Elo Kiddies" in there. ;)

  • Still Rockin balls! Better than ever/anyone.

  • i love slade from osaka japan!

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome the best fucking band in the world...CHEAP TRICK!

  • I'm not sure if I like Slade or Cheap Trick better.

  • Both Cheap Trick and Kiss owe Slade a huge debt of gratitude

  • Slade are a hard act to follow....but this is a great cover !

  • Can you imagine what Cheap Trick is going to sound like in another 30 years? My God we won't be able to handle it. They sound better every time I hear them. Robin's 55 and sounds stronger that he did when he was 25. Holy Moly it don't get any better than Cheap Trick!

  • From the Slade Album old new borrowed and blue from 1974

    great cover version!

  • @macca63 I agree great version...but Slade rule.

  • Love Rick at 0:56 xD

  • better than the original!

  • @hollywoodwillster Refreshing, great sound but you can t beat the Slade sound, especially the vocal part

  • The best non-single Slade song. This version owes a lot to Segarini's cover from 1978(?), which is even better.

  • This is awesome. It sounds like it is straight from the bands glory days in the late 70's. Cheap Trick have nailed this song :-) Slade always had some great little rockers.

  • Cheap Trick's version rocks more than the original.

  • CT's version rocks more than the original.

  • @sunsetbeachmuz Slade sound is better though, especially vocals, but is a question of taste too

  • Cheap Trick's version rocks more than the original.

  • not as good as the original.

    good song though!

  • This is using footage from all their previous videos or live performances right?

  • This video puts such a grin on my face.

  • Hope they do this one in Boston in January at House Of Blues! Great!

  • drummin and smokin..

  • Pure Cheap Trick magic- It retains the beauty of the original Slade song, But adds a freshness all it's own. Great job boys, This may be the one that brings you back for the ????Time.

  • @TheJetfighter666

dude they've already been back they're here to stay

  • Cheap Trick do great covers imbuing them with their own good time rock style while maintaining the spirit and charater of the original.

I think it would have been even better with the original Jim Lea walking bass line, which was a feature of the song.

    watch?v=Dxrs1GlolWM&feature=related

  • Great Cover! and if the story is true:

Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick said that his band went to see Slade perform, and that they used "every cheap trick in the book", thus inadvertently coining his group's name

  • Good to hear the cover version of the original Slade version. Never heard it before!

  • yep. i am on my 6th glass of wine already! But it is still a great song.

I play it on my ipod while i ride my harley. And yes, his house is about a block from my church! i go past it daily on the way to work. These guys are very good. i wonder if they ever play at Gators? nahhhhhh

  • Okay, it is now my mission to play this over and over during prime time in order to make this the number one hit of 2009. I loved this song in the 70s by Slade. Now it is more than worthy of being a big hit. I live about 3 miles from the lead singer's house. How fitting that i play it over and over til the modern generation discovers what a great tune it is!

  • still have my night gallery t-shirt

  • There are some songs that should NEVER be re-made. I thought this was one. But........ this is amazing! Why did they wait all this time to put this on an album?

  • Cobain probably got the chorus theme to "Teen Spirit" from here..... kinda same pattern on the chorus vocals too....

  • I personally like the guitar effect during the chorus it seems to fit in nicely with the beat of the song

  • I think it's nice song!

  • Note to self: must see this in concert. soon.... really soon.

    rOck On

  • Bun E Carlos looks like he's having a blast back there.

  • Great great cover of the great original by Slade. Love it. Should it be a single?

  • 2:04 - 2:18 sounds just like the riff on ELO Kiddies from the album "Cheap Trick" from 1977! :D

  • A good cover of a great song by a great and underestimated band(SLADE)

  • @tonyins67 YES you are right!

  • Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

  • How can they go wrong.

Cheap Trick doing a Slade song,

    PERFECT!!!!!!!!

Two of the GREATEST rock n roll bands

    "EVER".

    Love it.

  • @petethehawk But Slade had more tunes and versatility. Great cover though

  • @carlphone I couldn't agree more, Slade are one of the most underated rock bands ever.

And without doubt the best live band iv'e ever seen. Cheers Carlphone.

    Keep on rockin!!!!!!

  • Life would be so dull without Cheap Trick.

  • theyre referencing themselves with the drum opening and parts of the guitar solo... its like theyre saying "we're back to our roots" ...so happy...

  • The beginning is almost identical to ELO Kiddies

  • rOck On! rOck On! rOck On!

The concerts, records, tapes, cds ... keep bringing it. And Thank

  • great version of a great tune....Cheap tick and Slade kill any band that's out today

  • the album of 2009- the show in madison Wi recently was AWESOME

  • Just to see the words, "Cheap Trick" and "Slade" in the same sentence are enough to tell me that I am gonna love this!!

    ... and I do!

This, made my night! Thank you!

  • Cheap Trick knows who the Sladest band in the 70's was....

  • Long live noddy!!!

  • This is Slade tune....well done remake!

  • very good

  • nice version..the new album for those who have not purchased it is amazing ...robin is just incredible ..they are great musicians and ive heard great guys..i remember them when they were this young seeing them at the garden as frshman in high school during the dream police tour....next stop cheap trick ..cleveland ohio!

  • is it as good as rockford?

    that was a great album

  • This album blows Rockford out of the water, and I really like Rockford.

The Latest will absolutely blow your mind.

  • Ok i will check it out.

  • o claire was my favorite song from that one

  • Love Rockford. Decaf is my fav. O Claire is an incredible song too.

  • Brilliant cover version.

Jim Lea sang the lead on the Slade original. Noddy is great but Jim's version rocks...

  • Kudos to the editor who had to piece all that old footage together to fit the new tune. Not a fun job.

  • Why do we have to be 13 to be dreaming of Robin whisking me away? Been dreaming that for 31 yrs!!!

  • awesome !

  • OMG I love this, it makes me feel like I'm a 13 year old praying for Robin to whisk me away!

  • i wonder why they didn't release the version from night gallery??

  • love it and im only 8 i listen to it when my dad puts the cd in the car!!!! and i sing to this song

  • thats great your dad has good taste..i remember hearing surrender and i was hooked...these guys belong in the rock and roll hall....its rediculous ..rick nielsen is one of the best pop song writers of all time...

  • Great version of a great SLADE song :-)

  • Jeff Lynne and Cheap Trick, that would be one of the greatest collaborations ever.

  • yes

  • Why did they keep this song 30 years???

    ITS GREAT

  • cuz it is elo kiddies

  • I also heard hints of that song throughout. I don't mind though, that old stuff is fantastic.

  • dont like it

  • why not mate?

do you like the original, or the Bob Segarini version either?

  • why not mate?do you like the original, or the Bob Segarini cover?

  • Night Gallery is when they stayed up all night and played songs if you go to the channel lookup Night Gallery.

  • LOVE IT IM ONLY 8

  • Love Robin's younger voice, when it was so sweet and tender. Also, love his voice today, it's stronger and richer, because he built it up over the years. I'm hearing his more mature voice, in this song. In any case, this song is great!

  • This is a new song mixed with night gallery at the end when rick knocks down the amp thats the ending to Hot Love Night gallery.

  • This is not a new song. This song was written and recorded by Slade back in (I think) 1976. Very well done here, I like the "Elo Kiddies" guitar solo.

  • I know the song itself is old but cheap trick recording it is new because most of this is off nightgallery.

  • The edited the footage to make it look lik they were singing this song. U2 did the same trick for their video window in the sky

  • whats nightgallery?

  • it was an allnight rock club in waukegan il.

  • So is Bun E Carlos still with the band? He did that pop stint with Tinted Windows.. Or is he with both bands?

  • Tinted windows is just a side project

  • Robin can sound any way he wants to. He is the best singer in rock music.

  • PEOPLE! This is off of the new album. I have the first album, and I've seen the same clips in the night gallery videos. It was the videos that were shot in '76. Thank you BigBishop1.

  • Did you ever notice that when CT does a cover song it's better than the original? California Man, Rock 'N' Roll Tonight, Magical Mystery Tour, etc.

  • Definitely one of their best traditions! To your list, RBRT, I'll add Speak Now and Day Tripper.

  • often , yes. not in this case though

  • I like this version a lot more. But when I'm out of sleeping pills, slade's is good too.

  • blah blah blah

  • if it is an old recording than hats off to Julien Raymond and whoever engineered this album for making it blend perfectly with the new recordings(which are also awesome).

I'm thinking like him: how did this song stay hidden for thirty years!? I LOVE IT.

  • its not

  • I beleive it's an older song because Zander doesn't sound this poliahed anymore, but this could be one of my fdavs from this year.

  • I geuss he is polished as this is new

  • I do not care when it was recorded. Its my new FAV! I love you Robin!!!

  • my mom is like ubsessed wit cheap trick!

This is her fav song! and mine!

  • no......................

  • You guys gotta get the new DVD of the 1978 Budokon gig. It's FREAKING great!!

  • Cheap Trick IS rock and roll. Period.

  • it's all about Bun E!!!!

  • Queenigma is 100% correct! And the comment might be the BEST one about CT that I've seen.

  • I do not believe this was recorded in 1976. The song "ELO Kiddies" was recorded for the debut LP but this version is really just a cover with ELO KIDDIES mixed in. If it had been recorded that long ago I am positive we massive Cheap Trick fans would have bootleg copies of it. I am almost 100% positive this was recorded recently. Easy enough to do, you know...these guys are masters in the studio, they can still sound like their 20 year-old former selves.

  • its a new recording played over footage from 1977 waukegan nite gallery performance

  • So far ahead of their time and still kicking ass today....one of my all-time favorite bands. Seen them 54 times in concert! NEVER disapponts!

  • Jimmy Lea must be proud, good job Cheap Trick!

  • im pretty sure he will be most happy about the money mate.

  • The dangling cig kills me everytime. LOL!

  • Another excellent cover by CT! How can this not be a hit?! Wake up America! This band is a national treasure. They're LONG overdue for some respect. CT isn't "back." They NEVER went away. They were just discarded by the same music business that's now trained the herd to accept today's lame pop music

  • Queenigman said it all.

  • the boys are sounding so fresh 30 years after Budokan--better than Rockford I think. Some of the more melodic, hook-laden tracks here remind me of "Stop This Game"--what an incredible band. They should headline this tour. My ears are still ringing from their show at Wolftrap in '05. Their awesome set was just too short.

  • man. who, now a days, can hold a candle to that type of songwriting? answer: NO ONE.

Cheap Trick is forever. Any band should be so talented. Good song guys. I'd love to hear more from the vault! Can't wait to hold a copy of the new album in my hands!

  • its a Slade song mate,

if you didnt already know that.

  • It's a classic sound because it was recorded over 20 years ago and released now.....jeeeeze,where are all the real cheap trick fans

  • Wrong - they just recorded this recently and mixed it in with ELO Kiddies. The main part of the song is a Slade cover. CT loves to do cover songs from groups that influenced them. re: The Move/Roy Wood, Big Star, Beatles,

  • Actually pat was correct, this was recorded in 1976, and included on the album now. This has been mentioned many times in the various articles about "The Latest".

  • wrong its a new recording played over 1977 footage according to ct myspace

  • It is an old recording. Here is a quote: "According to producer Julian Raymond, "Cheap Trick are fun to record because they are each a master of their craft, and there are so many great new songs on this record. But we also included an old one called 'When The Lights Are Out.' I couldn't believe it wasn't released in '76 when the band did it. I insisted they put it on the record just as it was."

Will you accept that the producer of their record might know the age of the song?

  • not this version though

  • re-recorded surely

  • Recorded in 1976.

  • This is 100% pure AWESOME. Back? Hell, they were "back" five albums ago, since '97 and they just keep getting better!

  • Comment removed

  • diggin' this remake

should be released as a single for what it's worth--the boys are back!

  • this song was never put on a cd

  • Do you mean the Slade one?

Cause the Cheap Trick version is on their next CD "The Latest", which is released tomorrow.

  • rick is awsome

    bun.e is awsome

    robin is awsome

    tom is awsome

  • Bun E's alright!

    Tommy's alright!

    Robin's alright!

    Rick's alright!

  • Great old footage!!

  • What more can be said other than They're Back!!!!!!

  • A great NOD from one great band to another!

  • Noticed the ELO Kiddies riff as well, i am loving this song as well as the others that they've been teasing us with, can't wait for the CD!!

  • I believe the elo kiddies riff was taken from this song to begin with. listen to the original

  • Anyone notice at around the 2:10 mark, the guitar riff is their old song "ELO Kiddies" ? I love how Rick will throw in subtle jokes like that. As he's always said, if youre gonna steal a few chords, steal from the BEST

  • The kids singing in the closing chorus is also like ELO Kiddies.

  • The coolest band ever!

  • Love this video!! So fun! I think Robin should wear that peach/pink suit on this summer's tour.

  • Wow! great song! Also very nice work on coordinating the video images with the song, perfect timing in many spots where you see Robin or Rick singing almost identical words. Really looking forwards to hearing the entire CD.

  • This song has the CLASSIC Cheap Trick sound to it. Proving yet again who the GREATEST band EVER is!

  • SLADE;-)

  • Best song of 2009!

  • There are different bills coming through Colorado this year; one has Cheap Trick and another has Weezer. Why not those two together? It would fit perfectly.

  • awbYEATS, if you were a Cheap trick fan, behind that apparently straight cover you'd notice a lot of subtle nods to old CT songs which raise our appreciation of the song.

Plus CT version has more energy and relief IMHO.

  • I'm not a cheap trick fan how? because I think the original has richer harmonies? or because I didn't explicitly say I thought that it was reassuring that at least they sound revitalized? or is it because I just disagree with you that doesn't make me a fan?

  • Sorry, awbYEATS, I didn't mean anything bad.

I just thought that, as a Cheap Trick fan, you would have noticed the nods to their early stuff, and therefore wouldn't have describe the song as a "note for note cover".

We're all CT fans, and we're all different. That's what's cool with that band.

  • Cool song.

Listening with good earphones, I just noted all those backing vocals ear candies.

Julian Raymond has done a very fine job with the Latest production.

  • Nice cover from the ROCKFORD FOUR!!

Fun, and lotsa melody..oh and it ROCKS!!

    Cheap Trick

    Cheap Trick

  • CT hits another out of the park! Looking forward to the new album in a big way!

  • Oh Yeah.

  • I can't stop playin this track. Gotta be one of the best things they've recorded in 30 years. It's an earworm(thanks Slade!)

  • Love it !!!!!

  • Did you ever notice that everytime Trick does a cover song it's almost BETTER than the original! California Man, Rock 'N' Roll Tonight, Magical Mystery Tour, etc.

  • คฬєร๏๓є!!!! :)

  • Brilliant!I love how they synced up their new song to old video of them playing Ello Kiddies. Great Song.

  • fuckin nice

  • Great!! So great! Keep Rocking !!
