When I described the look of this opera to a friend, she stated the problem with the production without even seeing it. She said that dressing everyone in the monochrome "robe-like" costumes must have negated one of the main points of the opera; that the tragedy occurs because of the differences in the cultures involved. She was absolutely right. The singing was very good, though. John Matz, the Pinkerton, was particularly wonderful.
I was prepared to hate this production. I have seen this opera numerous times. Surprisingly, the minimalist production enhanced the beauty of the music and the drama. I loved the production enough to see it 3 times.
i actually like the costumes--hint of kimonos without being over-the-top Orientalist. the minimalism matches the stage design. i just wonder how long this euro-style minimalism of both set and costume will last!
This is going to be my first Opera in March :) I'm seeing it in Dublin so I hope it lives up to this!

Wow, even in this small excerpt, the singing is outstanding.

the tragedy and differences of culture is laying in the music and not in the question of wearing kimonos or not.

the problem with Wilson productions is that if you turn off the sound you do not know if you are watching Butterfly, Tristan or Aida...

I prefer kimonos. It ruins the plot without them.

This is a performance from Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Very beautiful direction and voices. Great!

Great voices. I wish I could have seen it.
I know that we didn't have a great view, but what was up with the costumes? That looked kind of... Magic Flute-ish to me.
