I actually met Sugarfoot today for Youth Action Team! That's the only reason I know him because I don't play drums. He's a really nice guy. The Ed Greene version was dubbed, but Sugarfoot didn't know that so he said he tried FOREVER to tried to find a way to play it without dubbing it, and when he got it he was happy. He finally played it for someone and they went "WTF!" because it never was done undubbed! Just goes to show the power of hard work and determination
@1982Rafael while playing with Tito Jackson as drummer for his blues band a few years back I was fortunate to meet "Sugarfoot" as well. As you stated it was overdubbed. He showed me how he plays the song. Believe me it was quite an honor.
@actiondown Cool! Do you still play with Tito? Does Sugarfoot keeps the left hand steady on the hi-hat? I still don't know exactly how he played the groove.
@actiondown The right hand does the hh pattern exactly like how it is on the record with the open and closed hh. The left had does All the work starting from the floor tom then to the high tom back to the snare. its complicated and hard to do but with prcatice it can be done. I wish i knew how to video me doing it to show you
The tom parts in Human Nature were overdubbed, too? Interesting. Not many drummers can play that song correctly, either. Sugarfoot is the only drummer I've ever heard or seen who plays that song exactly the way it is on the record. Most drummers play the tom parts with their kick drum.
thanks .... speaking of Ed ... dig his work on the early hall and oates stuff ...sarah smile , rich girl .... he is tremendous .... someone told me Ed lives in nashville now , and does studio work on country records
Thank you! I love this song too. Have you heard the "The Jacksons Live" CD version? That one is with Jonathan Moffett on the drums, it is really amazing.
Yes, I have the Jacksons Live CD and this has always been one of my favorite songs. You need to post a longer video of you playing this song :-) You are really talented! Wish I could have gotten this good on drums but I still have a set sitting downstairs so it's never too late!
Nice job. Would have been better if you'd edited the music in...then again.. youtube has been getting really strict about copyright so I guess it was smarter not to...they'd have just taken your audio anyway.
this pattern is in rick latham's 'advanced funk studies' for those that don't know...cracking book

@gabsmabs62 Yeah, I studied Rick's book, excellent book. There is also Contemporary Drumset Techniques from him too.

Damn!!! You nailed it! I always thought it was like 2 or 3 drummers doing that track.
Absolutely gorgeous playing man!

@turntapzap Thank you!

@turntapzap By the way, Ed Greene added the toms as a overdub; Sugarfoot live version is complete, I tried to emulate the 1981 version

You know the stuff was overdubbed on the recordings?
Thats what Sugafoot told me :)
The human nature drum part with the toms was overdubbed as well.....
Moog167 2 years ago
That is cool. I tried to figure out the groove without watching the drummers playing it.
I thought that Ed Greene played without overdubs...
Jonathan's version from The Jacksons Live album is awesome.

Thanks, I'll record the whole song next week and upload here.
I think that, even if you have just 10-15 minutes/day to play the drums you should practice a bit everyday, it is never too late to make some music!

Thank you, I was just playing the groove without the playback.
I want to record some music but I don't know if I'll have copyright problems. I'll probably play along to the track and upload my drum audio only.
