After firing it was customary to rub the black soot on one's face that was left on the track and launcher. Then, off to the local bar to consume large quantities of Ouzo. 84th USAFAD/6BN 32nd FA!
Footage of last live firing camp for the British army with the lance missile. This particular mission was with 3 missiles firing at the same target with launch pads approx 1km apart, smoke trails spookily write 666!!!.
That's a good shot, you blink...you miss the launch...I fired two of them in Crete on the Range in the Med. What a great time, and the food down town kicked but ;c)
The black smoke coming out the side was from the spgg (solid propellant gas generator) who's main job was to pressurise the system and force the two liquid propellants (UDMH IRFNA) down to the engine, via diaphragms which burst at the correct pressure. The secondry job of the spgg was to initiate spin which was maintained by the control surfaces (fins) which where slightly offset.
misses eine halb hahnchen mit pommes frites. I used to get that every Saturday from this Ma & Pa restaurant located real close to our detachment in Wesel, Germany.
The X1 Discoteque! Many nights there, until we got banned. Did you ever go down to the Tref Punkt bar? I remember a very nice looking young girl who used to work there. She had long dark beautiful hair. Many great times in there. Drinking Weissen Beer until the wee morning hours. I lovede Crailsheim. Man , what I wouldn't give for a decent Jagerschnitzle mit Pom Frittes right now!
Hi! C Btry. 2/42/ F.A. Crailshiem Germany 1984 thru 86'. man I miss it so much. Two of the gratest years of my life were spent right there in Crailshiem.
SP/4 Carroll, C Battery 2/42 FA 84 thru 85. I still miss The Rod and Gun club, The italian pizza guys on post. Elsies Gast House, The Treff Punkt, Weissen beer, Whacker beer, The Whacker site. And the occasional trip to Nuremberg. I know McKee barracks are long gone, but I sure do hope the Possum Club kept going. I cannot find a good jagerscnitzle mitt pom frittes anywhere here.
If I remember rightly the carrier is about 70% M113, I don't understand why the carriers and recovery units where not deployed in the falklands (minus the missile). It's amphibious.
Yes, the Lance missile's launcher was based on the M113 chassis. Just like many other US systems, like the Chaparral anti air system or the Pershing missile. Pershing missile also used a modified M113 chassis as a TEL.

i used to be in west germany in a weapons support groupin munster guarding the lance between 81 and 83 great piece of kit but on exersise for about 8 months out of the year
was at 8 regt i was in 70 coy rpc we used to look after security and the digging of many holes there was also 144 coy rpc did much the same at that time we were the biggest regt in the british army that is all the regt,s and corps together many great memories of munster and germany as a whole hefy,s braty,s pomfrites half hanchen and getting p###ed on our time of happy days
ive never studied this particular missile but correct me if I'm wrong but just like the THAAD (Theatre High Altitude Air Defense) System, is it possible the loop from the smoke trail that made the 6 is from the missile spinning to burn off excess fuel to keep it within the range it was fired on? look on wikipedia for THAAD for a picture
If I'm correct, the THAAD system is somewhat new and the Lance Missile was first developed in the 1950's and later deployed in the early 1970's... The missile does spin and that's what the puff of black smoke is initially. I would imagine that the "666" thing was one time occurrence. The Lance was an old-time missile and used azimuth & elevation coordinates to determine it's trajectory to hit the target...
The Lance is not for air defence, it's a tactical nuke. If the weapon did have to be used against the USSR the crew only had a life expectancy of eight minutes, hence the shoot and scoot tactics. lay on, erect, launch and get as far away as possible, in eight mins?
This is very hard to believe, giving the fact that the system is completely manually operated. They should've automated the system, like the Russians did with the Tochka.
The smoke trail is made by the engines used to spin the missile in order to give it more accuracy. They are not made to burn excess propellant. Not even THAAD works like that. That spiral like flight was only used in 2 or three tests so the missile wouldn't exceed the test range range. In a real situation, the THAAD missiles would not fly like that.
How long it took for the Lance to be emplaced and getting it ready to fire? Why didn't they automated the system, like the Russians did with the Tochka, which is the Lance's Russian contemporary counterpart? From my point of view, the problem with the Lance system is that it needed to much time to be emplaced and getting it ready to fire. This, opposed to the Russian Tochka.
Awesome.... I drove an LT in 6/33rd...
