Nuclear fusion produces next to nothing in terms of radioactivity. The process doesn't result in radioactive decay...you're thinking of nuclear fission (conventional nuclear reactors use fission)

We do know how to contain it; the issue is sustaining the reaction for long enough to produce a useful amount of power. Currently they can only run for about 1 second per day, whereas they need to run for about 15 consecutive seconds. This would be enough to power a small city for 1 month.

Like I've said- fusion isn't clean, it produces radiation... it involves smashing two atoms into smaller atoms like hydrogen would become helium, thus producing a large amount of energy. Energy is in the form of wavelengths and most likely the energy from fusion will be... Gamma radiation! By the way: you should stop posting spam. No the energy is in the form of light and heat...that's why our sun and the stars (basically huge fusion reactors) produce no radioactivity, just immense light and heat. This is true of an artificial fusion reactor as well. Gamma radiation only comes from pulsar neutron stars and supernovae, it isn't a result of the fusion itself, but other processes. Also it might as well be renewable because it requires such minute amounts of hydrogen...which by the way is smaller than helium, not vice-versa.

Wrong again. Stars DO produce radiation. Our magnetic field on earth prevents it from filtering through and killing us all. Look it up on the net, do stars produce radiation. Radiation isn't the same thing as radioactivity, however you're actually right about that one. While I don't believe this would create a black hole either.... but there is more than just the mass of two particles. See, when an object approaches the speed of light, Newtonian based physics commit suicide and are replaced by the relativistic physics that Einstein came up with.
This means that everything gets messed up... including the mass. At that speed each particle would be ~fifty times its original mass... still not that much, but you can see where it could eventually become a problem.

Earth is a very very massive piece of spacerock. It can not be destroyed by Human invention not made specifficly for this purpouse. What they do there is not run it, smash some protons and see the result. But Once operational it can and must continue working for weeks, months, years who knows. I think that this experiment is great because from the sounds of it scientist are trying to get the core foundation of how matter came to be. Okay, so I can't claim to completely understand everything about this project because the information presented to the public is largely rudimentary and designed mostly to make us feel in the loop, if I may pun, of this more than $60 billion experiment, but from what I've researched it appears the experimenting side's main argument against anything bad happening is that these types of particles are colliding within our earth all of the time. Yeah... a couple of other experiments are also going on. One of which is trying to detect the Higgs particle that is theoretically a remnant of the Higgs field, which supposedly created mass in our universe. Plus, what is being performed happens all the time in nature, or in the cosmos in this case, but a thousand times more massive... and to date no blackholes have ever spawned from these collisions.
