    Fucking LOVE that verse.

  • Love her - a phenomenal woman, phenomenally.

  • love this.

where did you get the audio for it?

  • Wow, wow, wow! I wish I could go back in time or give the women of today a piece of her cause this is what we need. Strong & powerful women who take pride in the down falls in life cause without them, they wouldn't be who they've become which is hopefully someone who's stronger. Sometimes, our downfalls can make life more interesting & it makes us more interesting cause it gives us a story to tell. You're story can save another life or inspire someone. Find a purpose in life that serves another

  • her words are intricate layers of power, knowledge and soul.

  • what is the name of the instrumental in the back?

  • i love maya angelou.

i hope i spelled that right, but

    yeah.

that sent shivers down my spine.

i recited caged bird for school last year,

she has a lot of poems that people can easily understand...

i could relate to it well too. good job.

  • Please see Dr Angelous interview, she talked about the power of words.

For further info on utube look her up under " On The Power Of Words" broadcast by (CBS News).

She stated during that interview that

vulgarity is vulgarity in any language.

Labelling some one mentally ill because you disagree with them or they opinion is different to your own is wrong and unecessary.

  • You're joking, right? If not, please do not pass go, do not collect $200, go straight to the nearest mental hospital and commit yourself because you are stark raving mad.

  • You're too ignorant to be allowed to breed.

  • are you serious? wow. dude. go watch a britney vid. we're not here to compare but be touched by the soul through words and music. yes there are allot of great writers when people dig deep but that comment... wow not cool.

  • ARE YOU SERIOUS? you must be mental.

  • @2dope2

Please kill yourself. Dr.Maya Angelou has been here way before Britney. So that argument is invalid. Dr.Angelou has written poetry that has inspired millions, and has gone through hardships that has changed America. You fail.

  • i may not be black, but i know how it feels to be robbed of your heritage and ways of life,,but i do hope that one day black people get their reward for helping build the United States of America btw im native american

  • @dynastyballer13 dont worry we all been robbed some kind of why by whites soo were in this hole together and we are sure to get

  • beautiful :)

  • shameful history and a shameful present.

"if u want me 2 make my mark and leave that in time

i say save iraq and free palestine".

  • Wonderful, fiery, soul!

  • omq diisz is da most beatuful peom i hve ever heard.. and btw i wuv dha way she reads it =]]

  • thank you for sharing this!

  • Real poetry is about emotion. About expressing yourself. If you'd rather read Robert Frost, fine, but please don't bash other writers.

  • I added it to my inpirational list of videos.

  • Comment removed

  • There is no other way to describe her but truly amazing. Its a gift to listen to her. Those words...so deep. So much meaning. So much emotion.

  • def my favorite video on youtube

  • hey question

where did you find this audio recording..cause im also doing this poem for a project

if you could help me out that would be great!

    thanks

  • good job she is inspired me to write to this day went to one of her speakings this is the first poetry she read that even since then i felled in love with her works

  • Very well done

  • I believe this to be one of the most significantly inspiring pieces of African American literature that I have ever heard. I am leaped into a realm of truth and pride because of this poem. I believe this to be one of the most beautiful and uplifting poems ever that can be translated to any culture or individual. Angelou is a hero of mine.

  • she's not talking to gay people trust me

  • She's talking to anyone that's oppressed. Sure, she sets the theme through African American strife, and possibly women's strife, but there is a grander and deeper message to be heard. I surely hope you're not a ignorant bigot, in hatred of those who don't deserve ignorance.

  • you are a beautiful person. I actually typed a response to what moimehdi said but then erased it because he's not worth my time. You nailed it right on the head. He is plain ignorant. You are a very nice person for actually breaking the poem down for him. I would have never given him that time of day. He's beyond ignorant. He's stupid. No disrespect to anyone in this art form. Thats not what its about. Thats not what Maya is about either.

  • Comment removed

  • and then the troll rolled through.......you are out of place here. You can't even decipher a poem beyond literal words. Are you fond of dr. seus?

  • For the love of sanity - get off the cross, someone needs the wood. The poem is a testament to human spirit ... shit, get off the self-pity boat already.

  • She may not have written to the gay people, but she is speaking to anyone who can relate to her struggle.

  • @mwj12487

She wrote to every person gay, black, asian or any other who suffered, was abused or asulted... the triumph of human spirit always rises!

  • @vlatkito please stop no she didn't she wrote to the African slaves how can she write for someone who hasn't had nearly the same amount of suffering as those who were in bondage once again find your own inspiration her poem means exactly what it means if she wanted to say gay Asian and etc she would of said that because Mrs angelou is know for saying exactly what she means so once again please stop your both wrong

  • @mwj12487 no she is talking to black people find your own poem and your own struggles are yours not ours stop trying to use the black struggle as a crutch to help your own its not the same. someone cant just automatically guess someone is gay unless they behave that way but being black is something that is always there

  • This is really good editing. Fantastic job.

  • kanye west has this tattooed on his arm

shows u he can recognise another genuis' work

  • How could someone put such lame music behind such a perfect poem? Suddenly it's like a bad pharmaceutical TV ad... Maya REALLY DOESN"T NEED vapid, unimaginitive music behind her...

  • the audio was actually taken from an official audio recording of maya angelou, so apparently she likes the music. and so do i.

  • @mkimimi The music was superb.. and perfect.

  • @bluegreencommunities: Hate is an ugly coat one wears to hide low self-esteem.

The critic brings forth no beauty of its own, it only seeks to shame as it is ashamed.

Both the poem and the accompanying music are beautiful; that is, if you are seeking beauty.

  • @bluegreencommunities hahaha!!!! I guess Maya, does need the tv ad music!

  • Powerful beauty.

  • Awe inspiring. 5 stars just aren't enough.

  • dis poem inspires just likee qospel music wen ii thouqht lifee wasnt worth it sumetimes cus its full of bull i listened to dha sonq by an man sinqinq it && it just makes me say ii can do it. !

  • Dr Angelou is an inspirational figure for all generations. I have seen her perform live and she is truly alive as few humans are at every level of her being.

  • this is one of my favorite poems.

even if you aren't black, you can still relate to this.

    everyone can.

  • Amen sister......oxox

  • you idiot you know why? because of cocnut heads like you.the sad thing is you wouldnt understand it anyway

  • I first hear this poem on the soundtrack for the Broadway musical "The Civil War." It is wonderful, and is very befitting of America. It really speaks of the journey that the American people have been on for the past two hundred years, and is a perfect backdrop for this year's presidential election! Maya Angelou is great!

  • we done this in english this term at school 4 our prejudice topic, i really like it i think its beautiful xx

  • One of the Best! :)

    so am i

  • very nice

  • I love her voice so much

  • Angelou's poetry speaks to the heart. enough of the intellectual masturbation.

  • I love this poem one of my favorites but i love maya angelou

  • this is my favorite poem.

  • Bueatiful

  • wow they skipped alot in this poem =/

  • My point is this: Cullen's works paved the way for many today, INCLUDING, Dr. Angelou. To deny our modern-day artists is to deny those that came before them, and this is Dr. Angelou's central theme. You don't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been. Whether you choose to agree or not, the two are forever joined in ways that transcend poetry and prose.

  • And to piggy back and add on to what you have said. We study the greats of the Harlem Renaissance and other african american intellects during that time. Hughes, King, Hurston, X and we call our selves educated. and we are. DR Angelou called them "friend" she ate with them, studied with them, cried with them. What makes them more informative now than then. SO, if we can read them and be educated, why can't she know them and be as powerful.

  • Wonderful intellectual conversation you guys are having. It's nice to see black people having INTELLIGENT conversations without all the mudslinging.

    Peace.

  • To some, Cullen's works seemed lofty, i.e. "To John Keats, Poet, at Spring Time", but his piece, "Incident" still showed a man plagued by and subjected to horrific racism.

  • Tell me, how do you define "talent"? What are the actual tangibles you use to derive an answer for such a highly subjective art form? I understand that you are an ardent Cullen fan, but why? Cullen was a part of the Harlem Renaissance, which forever changed the very dynamics of Black art/literature/poetry in America. Yes,he and the works of his many peers (Hughes, Johnson, McKay)focused on proving "racial consciousness",an idea that often alienated and ostracized disillusioned classes of Blacks.

  • It amazes me to read some of the vitriol posted here. Dr. Angelou's work doesn't need the stamp of the Almighty Oprah to validate it; read her books, you will see she addresses things we've ALL dealt with in life. Dr. Angelou confronted and overcame injustice, fear, bigotry, and self-loathing. All of this nonsensical rhetoric about her scholastic achievements are irrelevant..just pick up "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" and discover yourself through another's journey. "RISE" children!!

  • as you can see by reading the comments, bringing up her "scholastic achievements" was not my own doing, but another's. i merely responded to the perpetual "dr" this, "dr" that going on here, which you've continued, and thus brought up the scholastic issue again. so, if you don't want to discuss it, stick to the standard title: either "maya angelou," or "mrs. angelou," or whatever else, but not the strange and improper "dr."

i do not like oprah, but it's not the point -- her lack of talent is.

  • This stance you've taken is nothing more than a battle of semantics. You are free to debate the legitimacy of using an honorary title, but it does not negate Dr. Angelou's literary contributions. I find you haughty, yet comical; it appears you have other issues simmering below the surface. Did you take a class from her and flunk? I reiterate that I find Dr. Angelou's work a comforting salve to a weary psyche..especially for those disenfranchised and harangued by injustices.

  • Preach on friend, preach on. And you know what I think is totally amazing. These idiots comments on DR Angelou, have not taken any wind out of her fantastic sails. She still rises.

  • LOL! Thank goodness for Dr. Angelou.

  • yes, I can see why she sparks the jealous in those who can never achieve her intelligence. Paper degree or not, the woman is WELL EDUCATED. talk about motivation
