this is anoher thing i miss about old school sports: clever nicknames. The Microwave, His Airness, Dr.J, The Iceman, The Mailman, The Admaril, The Worm, The ROUND MOUND OF REBOUND, The Answer, Clyde The Glide, Hakeem The Dream, Wilt the Stilt, Mr. Clutch,
now look what we have: D.Wade, D.Howard, K.G. D. Rose, King James is ok, Kobe...no disrespect to the athletes but yea, you get what I'm saying. The nicknames of yesterday held prestige, they held a resume.
@terryts2 Well as a Houston fan the announcers have come up with some cool nicknames for Rockets players: Yao the Great Wall, Chuck Hayes as the Chuck Wagon, and Luis Scola as the Scooper Intendent :P Oh, and Moses Malone was also the Chairman of the Boards.
@terryts2 Dwight Howard is called the second superman by some (you know after Shaq left Orlando) not very original i know. Pierce is the Truth. Kobe is the Black Mamba and Kevin Garnett is the Big Ticket/ the Kid. How could you forget? lol. Durantula, Vinsanity, Matrix, Agent Zero, etc.. Sure some of them are like early 2000 nicknames, but you can't say that they still don't have clever nicknames.
everybody hates the pistons.. but there is one thing about them that you guys cant deny.. the nba changed the rules so jordan couldnt get hit anymore.. so he won all those titles after the rules were changed
@fletch2240 Well, to be honest, Piston defense in the 90s was scary enough, the 80s probably felt like they were trying to kill you. And they probably were.. lol
@AngeloVicencio Honestly, if you watched Vinnie Johnson during his career, it seemed like there never was such a thing with him as a "forced" or "awkward" shot. Not saying I know that for sure on this shot (the clock must have been going through his head), but he could make just about anything when he was hot, and he knew it. Let me throw out Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, and Vinnie Johnson as the greatest three guard combo in league history? I know someone may come up with better, but let's see.
@AngeloVicencio Sorry, misinterpreted your intent. I agree with you on the appearance of the shot, I was just trying to make sure Vinnie wasn't sold short on putting up all sorts of shots that somehow went in.. The trap (I think) we all tend to fall into is reading the words and not hearing the tone/intent. My apologies.
@marturion1 - "[Pistons] underappreciated team!" Just finished watching 1988 Finals game 7 highlights. Those Pistons were clutch! Sticking shots like a bunch of savants!
Pistons Glory Days. Bad Boys. Isiah, Bill Laimbeer, VJ, Dumars, Salley, all greats. And RIP Chuck Daly we will gratefully miss you. Thanks for giving us championships in Detroit.
Most passive winners of an NBA championship ever.

What great memories and what an underappreciated team!
This was the front page headline in the DETROIT NEWS the next day,
VIDI, VICI, VINNIE!
Which is, of course, Latin for "I saw, I conquered, Vinnie...."

nimajneb31 2 years ago 2
just Carmelo Anthony (last season, scored 45 in the whole game) and George 'the Iceman' Gerving (when scored 63) have ever scored 33 in a quarter
Couldyournameis 2 years ago
He was called the Microwave because he would heat up fast and stay hot.
