...and entertainment value, as well as technical proficiency. I picked this song because it gave me an emotional platform to create this routine. No, it's not the Blue Danube and we are doing some lifts and such, but it is 3/4 timing and the leg and body swing, as well as the formal hold, when appearing, are all a reflection of the classic Viennese Waltz.
This is David Weise, the male dancer in this video. This is my first time reading the comments over the past years. Very interesting;-) Thank you to those that had kind words to say about our performance.
Here's a little insight: the producers of the American Ballroom Challenge, and the organizer of the Ohio Star Ball set up this 'Showdance' event as an addition to the normal dance program for competition. In this extra show event the couples are encouraged to show maximum creativity...
Beautiful dance, and as usual a lot of stupid comments from ill-informed jerks. Learn about the different styles of dance and the rules. International style and American style are different. One is not right and the other wrong. No different from the different types of car racing. Appreciate all of them.
I think a lot of people here are just very badly informed. The title says it's SMOOTH Viennese Waltz. That means they're allowed to get out of closed position.
Apparently you're not a dancer. It CAN NOT be taken out of a modern musical or a movie. This dance requires training, and a very good amount of it at that. The movies today show very poorly choreographed Argentine Tangos, because they'd rather sell sex than romance, and they don't want to waste their time and money training.
All very pretty-pretty but did anyone spot any actual Viennese Waltz? I've re-run the clip a couple of times, making a particular effort not to blink, but still it eludes me.
American Style smooth is in many ways harder than International Standard, mainly due to the transitions between closed and open. After all it's much harder to refuel a plane during flight than when it's sitting on the tarmac.

David & Valentina were my teachers for a year and they are fantastic people in person and I feel very lucky and fortunate for that experience! One thing you learn in Ballroom dancing is that a lot of uncommon songs have the beat for a lot of these types of dances--think outside the box georgewu5!!
We dance viennese waltz to "Breakaway" at our studio all the time and I know they do at other local studios as well. The song is simply wonderful to dance to...I dont understand what is wrong with it. Do you not like the music or the dancing? (confused)

@Czerniakowska I agree with you, No matter how pretty it may look, it didn't have any actual Viennese Waltz..
jiraya350 2 years ago
It's a disgrace to call this a waltz. This could be taken straight from some modern musical or movie. That's what Hollywood does.

This ruined the character of the viennese waltz completely. Can you use Chinese music with viennese
rhythm and danced viennese waltz? This is something
I had been worried about for years. Just like using
country western music to play Brahams !!! Absolutely
disgraceful! Why don't you create your own? The Pueto
Ricans already borrowed the Cuban mambo and said they
"invented" the L.A. Salsa. Why couldn't you call this
video " American western Waltz" or something like that?

In response to georgewu5, "Pueto Ricans"??? And when did any "Puerto Ricans" say they invented "L.A. Salsa"???

That was the most addle-brained comment, on so many points, I've read in a long time. Thanks for the laughs.

1. i like chinese music and if it were to have the viennese beat, hell yes i would dance to it.
2.this is american smooth not international standard, and even if it were standard it would still be acceptable to dance to this music.
3. What does Puerto Ricans and Cuban mambo's have anything to do with this....?
