  • ashamed to have this man as my congressman. How many generations should it take before someone does become a citizen? And what's wrong with having them have all the same rights as a citizen if they were born here and call this their home!? Their parent's legal status should have nothing to do with it. They don't see their parent's origin of birth as their home. I don't understand how you can deny citizenship rights to a person who was born here and calls America their home

  • @caffingdu I dont know about you, but i dont believe in pregnant illegals breaking the law by getting into this country ILLEGALLY and using their babies as an excuse to stay here. I also dont believe in paying for that babies schooling, health and so on when they clearly broke the laws of this nation. I would also rather give my money to my own kids not some "anchor babie." I dont bust my ass at work all day to support someone else's baby.

  • @dbaez011 When these babies are born and raised in America they become as American as you or me. Their culture is predominantly an American culture. Their home is America. How can you justify sending these children to a place they have never been to before in their lives???? It's not sending them "back" to Mexico. They never were in Mexico. It's ridiculous. And these children often grow up to become 1st generation college students, becoming productive members of society. They are not leeches

  • @caffingdu Your facts frankly are not accurate. I actually recently saw a statistic that said that it takes about 4-5 generations for measurable improvements in educational attainment and wealth. It took quite a while for the Irish and Italian Catholics to achieve what they have a achieved and they didn't have the ability to have their own media in their native tongues, they were forced to assimilate.

  • @JohnRhysMusician I would like to see that statistic, because I frankly don't believe it. 4-5 generations is 80-100 years back. Of course, times have changed a great deal since then, and there was a very small amount of immigration from Latin America over 80 years ago and there would therefore be too little data.   • @JohnRhysMusician (continued) And, if the statistic were true, then we would still be seeing a SIGNIFICANT disadvantage of Irish, Eastern Europeans, etc. in America since it was less than 100 years ago that immigration from these places finally began to decline, and we would still see significant portions of these populations that failed to assimilate.

  • @caffingdu We actually do see a disadvantage among those ethic groups. White Protestants continue to enjoy higher educational attainment and higher household incomes than White Catholic immigrants, most of whom are Italian and Irish. I'd encourage you to venture to a large city like Chicago and compare the neighborhoods that are mostly white and protestant with those that are Irish Catholic or Italian. You will notice a substantial disparity.

  • @JohnRhysMusician Of course there is still an advantage towards WASPs, there's still a large disparity between blacks and WASPs, and blacks have been here for about long as WASPs but I put the emphasis on SIGNIFICANT disadvantage when it comes to immigrants. Catholics/Irish/German may be disadvantaged, but only slightly if you would take statistic from the nation as a whole. And, even if it were a significant disparity, does this mean we should never have let say the Irish to immigrate here? 

  • @caffingdu (continued) Second generations kids always speak perfect english, though they still usually can speak spanish. and often, by the third or fourth generation most have completely abandoned their ancestor's native tongue for english.

  • @caffingdu Blacks were discriminated against. Latinos and others have not faced institutional discrimination.

  • @JohnRhysMusician (continued) These people have assimilated quite well into American society. Their descendants may still retain some cultural heritage, but it's not like most Italian-Americans still speak fluent Italian. As a young person in California who grew up in a very diverse neighborhood where there were many kids who had parents or grandparents that came from Mexico, I can see this where I live.

  • @caffingdu You are right, but the same cannot be said for Latinos because they are being encouraged to have an ethnic identity unlike previous immigrant groups. They have their own media, their own regions, their own ethnic lobbies.

  • @JohnRhysMusician When other ethnic groups came to America they initially tried to isolated themselves in "Irish Town" or "German Town", or "China Town", or what have you. And yes, today Latinos have some of their own media outlets, but that is a product of modern times where media is everywhere. What media outlets previous groups could create, they did. For example many ethnic groups of the past would have their own newspapers before the community would eventually assimilate.

  • This is hardly a new problem, and not really a problem at all.

    Foreign students often have children while in the US so the child has the choice of US citizenship when they turn 18.

    This is making a big deal out of nothing, this country was built on immigrants and if some of these children choose to move here they will just help this country grow.

    If he didn't mean for there to be birthright citizenship, he should have worded the amendment differently. This section is obvious.

  • Proud to have this guy as my congressman.. but by getting rid of NAFTA we can slow immigration during our economic crisis.. but we have to also think of the economic crisis NAFTA created South of our border. NAFTA caused a massive wave of immigration because the jobs that the US created in their countries were being shipped off to China which already owns all of our debt. Least I forget that getting rid of NAFTA will help to create more jobs here in the US, that and getting rid of the Banksters.
