I mean like your monitor is capable of displaying brightness levels no greater than 255, and our brain just is like a computer which I'm sure the brain has maximum sense levels (above which any further nerve stimulation will not cause any greater pain level, even if more damage is happening). And I was pretty sure I was at (or at least approaching) that level of pain with what I felt with my dislocated knee cap.

It hurt so bad I thought I would pass out (I've heard before than pain alone can render you unconscious if it's bad enough), but I never did faint (though I kept praying I would, it was so painful). It was the worst pain I can even imagine that a person is capable of feeling.
