I'm slowly listening up to DT again after letting off after SDOIT and went through a bit of a classical and jazzy period. Probably also because of that album, that one hit home hard. I just ordered TOT and Octavarium but something tells me I've been a bit short sighted here... :P

Well then, welcome back. ;) Some people really don't care for Systematic Chaos, and while I find it to be better than 99% of the music ever created, I still find it to a weak DT album. While implementing technical genius and brilliantly conceived pieces, I find it to lack the depth that albums like Octavarium and of course SDOIT have.

Anyway...to each his own. Hope you enjoy your trip back into DT-land.

I received the Special Edition with DVD containing the making off and the 5.1 remix today, I think I'm going to need a new amp to enjoy this :)

Thank you for your very warm welcome back PragueMeddler. I'm not going to say you're wrong, and I do agree that Oct and SDOIT have loads of depth, WDADU and FII took some getting used to too, and now they are classical DT albums to never be overlooked :)

I hope the same will go for SC, I like what I'm hearing nevertheless :)

Oh yeah, absolutely. I think SC goes along the same vein as FII and WD&DU for me, though for different reasons.

Like I said, I think SC is an excellent album in the scheme of things, and it gets worlds better when I watch these vids, haha.

Truth be told though, DT's never made bad music, though some of it may be a tad more appealing than other stuff. When you get to DT-level skill, it's all just preference from there on out since everything is just amazing regardless.

me too, sometimes I like to hear them talk as much as I love to hear them play, but the idea that it's sooo great what they're doing still hasn't caught on with them, they're still very prog and very down to earth with that, they still push hard but still almost look approachable. I wonder what DT would be like if LaBrie never had that bout with food poisoning in the early 90s--that's what ruined his vocal chords. Just listen to him in Images & Words and Awake versus, say, Falling Into Infinity and Scenes From A Memory. Good in the latter two, of course, but KING in the former!

He still has quite a voice, I'll give him that, but the more metal DT gets, the more out of place LaBrie seems to be.

(Oh, and Russell is my all-time favorite vocalist, too, so, yeah.)
