I think that Dave and Tom did an excellent job of explaining the full penalty here, although some may not get it. It was JESUS' SOUL which was made an offering for sin (See Isaiah 53:10) when it was "poured out...unto death" (Isaiah 53:12), which means that Hebrews 2:9 is obviously speaking of more than physical death.
