Stef, I love your stuff, but your economics are a bit off here. This is easier to see when it comes to free (not merely cheap food). If the food supply was constant, then the farmers didn't have any reason to labor (why would they?) and could pursue something else. The problem is not with free, or cheap, but with the dumping part. If Haiti farmers don't sell their produce to the world market, the resulting shocks (and not only to farmers) can be painful as any adjustment in a market economy is.

The "cheap" food part is easier to see if you consider whatever Haitians are paying them with. (and by the usage of the word cheap, you imply there is an exchange occurring.) I cannot help but notice that there is virtually "no" rebar in the broken concrete rubble in any of the media pictures and videos I've seen. Concrete without rebar has no tensile strength and will crumble in seismic zones instantly.

I have worked in Mexico where a days labor is measured by a 20 foot stick of rebar. These rebar would be accumulated then built with. Without codes!

I wonder what the availability of rebar has been in Haiti.

HAARP can accomplish something like Haiti's quake, and of course TPTB wouldn't have anything like a conscience to not, but I don't see the timely benefit for them here.
