24h tv is rubbish it's just an excuse for signed repeats of the daytime output, trashy sh*tty films and the oh so boring "like watching paint dry" ITV nightscreen if I had my way there would be NO TV-am,NO sign zone on BBC and I would still closedown and switch off transmitters late at night.
It might as well be in 1986 it doesnt make any difference does it? Most of us r asleep anyway during the night what is the point of 24 hr tv? the nightshift workers would not have any time to watch tv unless its a vigiant job and r watching to pass the time.
haha .. the good old days!! ... i was 3or4-years old then.
Its funny, I live-with / work-for an 80year-old, from a rural area ... he's a cool guy, but finds it shocking that anyone would be awake past midnight!!
Let-alone havin a drink, shagging, or surfing the net!! LOL
I would like to point out that BBc2 went 24 hours on weekdays with the Learning Zone in October 1995 but then was fully 24 hours with that in 1997 and Channel 4 went 24 hours full-time in 1997; the only exceptions to this are Olympic Games or telethon and election events which would enable television to remain on the air without closing down.
Professional while being friendly. Good programming all the time. News you want to hear, instead of hearing that Liverpool's superbanana thing is being built everywhere. Regional identity. That was the old ITV. As I live in Liverpool, I have to receive transmissions from that abomination of mankind we know as Granada. Once, they were good with good news and sports coverage. Now, they control the whole network and show nothing but celebrity crap. Thanks Granada(!)
ITV can be compared these days to a dingy landfill site where rubbish is dumped and the public is expected to buy it. Look at the way that McDonald's staff serve food to you after you've paid for it - that's just the way ITV serves it's crap to it's viewers. Mike S.
24h tv has just become a graveyard for repeats quizcall type shows and general dull rubbish! If I opened a tv station today it would closedown as soon as the last programme has ended after a quick weather forecast and a quick look at the following day's programmes then a prog menu and music final fade to the current time on the clock and fade to black with colour bars and stereo test-tone to transmitter shutdown.
@JauntyOne87 That rubbish may bring in advertising revenue but much of it is just SHIT! If I was in charge of the IBA I would have resisted the lure of 24h broadcasting and still shutdown late at night than fill the overnight hours with mindnumbing crap!
I live in the Granada region, and I so much preferred ITV this way as opposed to the ITV we are now lumbered with, which has about as much taste as a piece of used chewing gum, and is worth as much. Mike S.
Yes, but it's strange for me because untilo mid 1986 here in spain TVE started at 13.00 and closed always around 1 in the night. And I was surprised for the time changes on thames.
Up until 1987 it was commonplace for all ITV stations to shut down at 12.30am or so most days, before 24 Hour TV started, some stations such as Thames did experiment with late night broadcasting which did mean on many occassions they'd broadcast until 4.00am or so.
I thought that was pointless as ITV would be back on by 6.15am anyway!
thanks for the information. Here in spain, this was the system, TVE started up at 7.30 and closed down at 2.30-3.45 in his two channels, the another channels started at 7.30-8 and closed around 3. Those were the late night broadcasting, and 24 hours did not come until end of 90's
Here it was more useful, because it rans until 8 with Testcard!
I seem to remember LWT going on overnight in the late 80s, i remember staying up and watching NIGHT NETWORk, which was music based and also showed the PARTRIDGE FAMILY and CAPTAIN SCARLET. Anyone else remember the show? Mick Brown was one of the presenters.
LWT and Anglia were the first regions to start 24/7 broadcasting in 1987. the other regions followed within a year with those which resietd longest starting in early Sept 1988. The only exception was Ulster which didn't go 24/7 until later on.
Can someone tell me when Emmerdale moved from 5.15pm ON Thames to 7pm slot?

"We're back at 9.25, also in the AM part of the day." That's be 9.25am or "9.25 in the morning" then.

Nice closedown music, and not a bad evening line-up either - I'd watch it over the garbage they put on ITV these days!

Somehow, I can tell you the closing music for this night - it was 'Reaching Out' by Richard Myhill, taken from KPM CD13.

Just out of interest why did you have to switch off your tv set at night, and pull the plug out?

Perhaps Rillington2000 meant 1998?
olliedann 4 years ago
sorry. I meant all ITV stations were 24/7 by late 1988. Channel 5 went 24/7 in around 1995 and BBC1 went 24/7 in Nov 1997 when News 24 started.
Rillington2000 4 years ago
Channel 5 didn't launch till Easter Sunday, March 30, 1997 and was 24 hrs from launch.

you can't really say that bbc1 is 24 hour tv,it just links up to their news24 channel in the early hours

Thames in 1986 usually closed down at 3 to ten? or some early hour? I say it because I've seen two another videos from 1986.
