The reason CS/CS:S is so successful is because it is possibly one of the most balanced games, it has great graphics (For it's time, and I still think they are pretty fucking awesome now to be honest.) and the ability to mod the game is endless. I can tell you that opinions concerning CSS are very divided. A lot of old pros didn't want to play it. What I didn't like is that the difference between a good player and mediocre one is forcefully reduced, so u develop much lower K/d ratios. That was done a little bit in 1.6 , while 1.5 you had a recoil that was much more stable.
