My husband died to suicide on 17th September 2001, aged 38, and this was his favourite song and we played it at his cremation service. Wish he could have listened to these words that day and as he told me, this is a song of hope, that everybody hurts sometimes but you need to hold on. I will forever wonder why he could not. :(

If your hand is producing so much pain that you can't take it the last resort is to cut it off. He took his life because he was in so much pain it was destroying everything, him, his relationships and his life and he wanted to try and let everything else in his life be okay and get fixed.
