I also love the sound effect for the worm. As a child I would try to emulate the sound whenever I saw a worm on the ground. It's too bad worms don't naturally make that sound - the world would be more fun if they did.
I named my cat after remembering this short...my hubby thought I was NUTS. I've scoured everyplace looking for this and was beginning to think I'd made it up! Thanks for posting!
I remember this - especially the 'flashing-like' sound around the 0:35 mark. I was just wondering if this clip is about the same age as 'Marvelous Martha,' because the theme is the same (i.e. a girl who likes listening to words that begin with the same letter as her name). Thanks in advance.
@mstatz No. "Wade in the Water" is an Black spirtual from the 19C, when America was in the throes of the practice of slavery. I appreciate that babyfacedkayos recognized that. I also appreciate that you didn't.
It's not racist, it's words that begin with "w" that just happen to portray an "African American" girl "wading" in the "water". Are the words "walk" and "whistle" offensive to you too? Gawd! Relax, man!
Omg I can't even begin to list the ways it annoys me that you are trying to find something remotely racist about this CARTOON clip from SESAME STREET. Wtf does wading in the water have to do with anything? Nothing, that's what. It's her playing in a puddle you moron.
I like Welhelmina and the excellent W sound effects better than their "Marvelous Martha" counterparts. When I was small the "whiskers" part always made me laugh
@DiAnno13 I've often wondered the same thing. According to my sister it's because when people first started writing they wrote in cursive & in cursive a W looks like 2 U's stuck together.
Is that the correct spelling of her name? I wasn't sure. In my 38 and a half years alive, I've NEVER met a "Wilhelmina". If I can verify that as the correct spelling, I will change it.
Wilhelmina is one of several correct spellings. I happen to know a Wilhelmina quite well - and it's pronounced "willamina." (although that is the German spelling, and would be pronounced differently in German).
It was nice to see this clip, now I can share it with Wilhelmina. :)
Haha, it's awks cuz my name is Willamina... I look nothing like that. hah

I don't get it! Is "wading" a black term?
mstatz 3 years ago
@mstatz You've never used the term "wade" as in to wade in the water. Pretty common term in the English language.
SellsTS 1 year ago
@mstatz
are you serious? you dont understand " wading".....
no.... it is not a black term.... ODL
wading is walking in water that is like not even ankle deep.... like if you were to go walk in a creek/branch/stream.....
wow

Why is it called a Double-U when it's two V's stuck together?
DiAnno13 4 years ago
The name probably dates from the time when U and V were considered variants of the same letter.
ISNorden 4 years ago
Maybe when the two V's met, one said to the other, "Babe, I'm stuck on 'U'."
