  • LOVE IT!!!

  • Nice steam engine. Thumbs up! :)

  • Talk about some articulated stack talk! Love it!

  • Somehow it seems wrong to decorate that engine... like an insult to its masculinity or something.

  • This is one of my favorite vids ever of this engine. Best stacktalk I can recall hearing on a YouTube vid. :)

  • Skip, your the BEST. Thanks for what your doing here. Many of us just can't get out there as often as we'd like and your vids are so well done it's almost, well, maybe not almost, but sort of like getting to be there with her. The sound is excellent too. Steve sure does a superb job keepin' her up. He's the greatest RR Mechanic living. Keep it up Boys! We all need you and your passion.

  • Awesome. Good to see 3985 back.

  • Just listening to that is awesome!!

  • i remember lynn nystrom used to be the fireman. what happened to him?

  • @imagreatbigman lynn nystrom passed away on may 5 2010.LTN his son

  • Very well done, Skip! ;)

  • @trainfart - thanks friends, for the kind comments, as it is the encouragement to go out and get another one as long as the UP steam crew is willing to light UP her fire!

  • @SkipW how long does it take to heat up the boiler to get under way??

  • 5*****

  • bigmonstertrain!

  • Hear those dynamic brakes on Big Jack. It would be interesting to know how many pounds of drag that this simulates. I'm sure she was really pulling.

  • @844jim I have been a test driver in Australia and have done a few tests using dynamic to hold back the unit being tested. The dynamic barke is the equivalent drag of a full load on a grade. That is to say that if "big jack" could haul 4000 tons then that would be about the drag the dynamic would equate to.

  • they shud just hav the steaner running by itself, butnoooo thhat wud be cool

  • this wasnt its VERY first run. A few days before they fired it off and tested it back and forth on P2 of the depot if i recall the right track

  • @jointlinerailfan - true, that was a test with out a Load for a couple of hours & they called this the Lynn Nystrom Special with a Full Load, and about 6 runs on the Cheyenne strech that day from 8-5, for a full day of steaming! = a sucessfull breakin run. As the plan was for Laramie this day but the wye was out of service. And the 2nd option that day was to do a speer run. but lets just say a malfunction at the junction prevented that function so this to pass for her road test unfortunatly

  • it is good to have #3985 back nice video skip

  • Excellent!Perfect video!

  • Fantastic. So sweet to see, not one but two big brutes. That challenger sounds great. Excellent video.

  • That's a smokey maschine! Great video!

  • She still looks good after 2 years!! Even with the Dynamic's on from the DD40x i think 3985 could pull a building apart if she wanted to...LOL Awesome video other wise!!

  • The largest operating Diesel and Steam locomotives...wonderful!

  • Man what a sight to see this coming down the mainline. Are they planning to do a special run by? Wish they would come down to florida. What type of diesel engine is behind the steam locomotive? I've seen it before, just can't remember.

  • Sounds like the diesel has the dynamic brakes on to stress the 3985

    sounds great!
