Dang congrats dude!! Ima try this one for state solo and ensemble this year, and I can tell ill prolly have a screwy left hand during performance, just cuz thats how life shafts you sometimes haha, but what can ya do right? Good job again!
Alright man thanks a lot I'll try this solo out this year and if I do great I'll post it up on YouTube :D Wish me luck ha and Once again congrats on all your success
That's cool dude......hey i wanted to do this solo this year....what kind of tips would u recommend?? I think I have the chops for this but this solo looks pretty challenging
@kiwilights It is a very challenging solo. In terms of this piece, some tips I would recommend is to play it VERY slowly at first. Don't attempt to play it up to tempo initially; it is very difficult and you won't grasp the musical foundation of the piece. There are visuals included in the piece; remove them first. The success rate of this piece depends on how well you can interpret the rhythms, rather than the visual aspect. Practice some standard rudiments (flams, accent grids,
@kiwilights paradiddles, paradiddlediddles) as well as hybrids (cheeses, invert cheeses, etc). There are a wide variety of tempo markings, time signature changes, and dynamic contrasts; these are all very important to the piece. If I were to establish a goal, it would be to play this as musically as possible, rather than as visually as possible. This video isn't a good representation of the piece, so I'd recommend checking out my other video, i.e. the video with the same name minus State.
@kiwilights Thanks man! It wasn't my best rep of the solo; I had another one that I posted that's better (with the exception of a stick drop). I went to Smithville HS in Smithville, TX, although I kind of taught myself. The percussion program isn't as emphasized as other programs, and I wanted to better myself. So, that's what I did.
Haha, thanks. Yeah, my right hand, I don't know about it haha...I can play really fast on it but the hand and technique just looks completely grotesque, haha.
Yeah, thanks! It's a fun little thing to play. That and I had already warmed up for a good 15 minutes before hand with some good SCV exercises so it was just to get the blood running through my hands again. And nice! What piece did you play?
maybe he was the shortest in his drumline lol i am so your drum has to be up a litttle higher lol or it your snare line would look like manhattan skyline lol
Yea. Gusseck's great and he writes great cadences and excersices...only thing i dont like is the fact that he made The snares in 06 play matched grip..lol i hate matched grip
06? Gusseck quit temporarily after the 05 season...the 05 season played matched grip. I remember talking to someone about that...they said that they do Russian shows like that every so often and that they do matched grip for it. I dunno why.......
hah, im about to be a sophomore at east bernard, i play snare, i think we've played yall's school in pre-season football, but anywayz i played tornado by mitch markovich for my freshman state solo and got a 1 but anywayz im thinking about doing this solo next year :) but what is your setup on the drum with the mylar head, (whats the batter head, snare head, and are you using a staccato disk)
For the Mylar, I used the mylar head that came with the drum (it's school owned so I'm afraid I don't really know that answer, it was an old Remo head...) and an Evans MX5 + Staccato Disc. for the side.
Tornado is a fun solo. Mitch Markovich makes great solos...I played The Winner my freshman year.
I'll let you know, this solo is hard and demands major chops. If you need help dude, let me know. I'll be more than happy to try to help! :)
This video was when I was a senior. I'm about to be a freshman in college. lol. This video really isn't that great, I like my District solo a lot better.

just out of curiousity what sticks are you using? Scott Johnsons?
littlesnareboy 2 years ago
Yeah, I think I used Johnson's. If I didn't, then it would've been Hardimon's.

hahah i love how you used Grievous' Groove as your warmup (i'm assuming). I was there the same day as you. I made a 1 on my marimba solo.

Awesome job, man. Forget the minor mistakes; that was a Queen solo, and you dominated it.
By the way, Dynasty = Win.

Definitely FTW on the Dynasty. :)

Eh, it was just experimentation. lol. I look at it now and I think I was trying to get a flatter angle with my sticks. Just to see how it felt.

ahhhhhh it always happens to the best of us lol

Yeah, hell, I made a 1 with it...that's all that matters, haha.
