It's explained in the movie that Godzilla's heart is basically a nuclear reactor and at this point in the series, his heart has practically begun to meltdown. The meltdown has affected his body and changed his appearance, hence the constant heat and smoke coming off of him. In order to stop the inevitable explosion, the army used freeze cannons to try and cool him down and instead, have him melt away.

Hmm - they say Destroyah is an intelligent Kaiju - he doesn't use the same tactic if it don't work, he adjusts if things don't work his way and knows when to retreat although the timing just wasn't perfect when Goji melts and the JDSF pummel him with freezing beams. Then again - it proves the legacy of the Oxygen Destroyer itself - in the form of an armoured Precambrian horror...

Good editing, depicting it as Godzilla killing him with the fire breath. The ending originally did exactly call for Godzilla to kill Destroyah, with him beating it to death after it got shot down, but the makers of the film wanted the focus to by on Godzilla's death, in the ending he and Destroyah died together.

@dragonstormx Thanks. And yeah it's disappointing that this is one of the rare Godzilla movies where the army actually manages to kill a monster on their own. And it had to be Godzilla's greatest foe ever. I truly wished it would've been the alternate ending, but if Toho wants to give Godzilla's death a touchy moment, then let's condone it. I mean after all his battles, Godzilla deserves a great and heartwarming death, right?

They actually did seem to film the alternate ending and put on the DVD, you could probably find it if you put on youtube. I saw it, and yeah, Godzilla's death doesn't get as much focus as it did the final cut. Probably the best way things would have been is just piece them together and have the footage of his death in the final cut go after Destroyah's drops dead.

@supereldinho The Godzilla in Godzilla Final Wars is Godzilla Jr if the viewr wants it to be, thats why they made it look similar to the Heisei (90's) Godzilla but still gave it differences, its up to the viewer to decide whether or not it is Godzilla Jr.
