I was collecting escrow in a new building in Bellevue WA when a man was cut in half by a stuck between floors elevator. At first I didn't realize why so many people gathered around the elevator hall... Yuk.!!!

@glennbez The brake just stop working so the counterweight (heavier than the car) makes the lift slips to the top. There are emergency brake in case of falling down on every lift but emergency brakes for "falling up" are realy rare.

FAKE: first the elevator door was a normal door and they went out through the door when they thought they were there but the elevator somehow was still moving!!!
@Arabhacks Paternosters are pretty much belts with passenger boxes on them, they move in a loop and technically don't have a top or bottom to hit...sorta like an Escalator, except the box doesn't flip over when it goes over the top or under the bottom. Even if a Paternoster fails or breaks, it can't go anywhere, so it just stops.

@bjoker2421 I did watch the entire video and obviously the elevator was going UP. So therefore you can conclude that at the end of the video the car crashed into the ROOF of the shaft.
It wouldn't have killed them if they stayed inside neither? it malfunctioned and went UP not DOWN. They were more likely to get killed by trying to escape did you see how she was to being squished? :L
The governor is designed to stop a falling lift only and most lifts have no safety device to stop it "falling" in the up direction. This event can happen if the brakes fail because the counterweight weighs the same as the lift car + 40% of its rated load. There is a device called a rope brake which is designed to stop this but most lifts don't have them fitted.
Rymacs right, as the lift gets to floor they manage to get out just avoiding getting sliced in two because the lift brake has failed allowing the lift to free wheel up the shaft being pulled by the counterweight going down. Brakes are designed to be fail safe so god knows what happened in this case..
@matthewtchernev123 I'm not sure what was happening with the door, but I'm guessing it might be acting like a brake when partially open. The elevator is "confused" about why it's moving, it's trying to stop on a floor, and open the doors... but the brakes aren't working and because it's not actually leveling with the floor, the outside doors aren't opening. Eventually whatever was causing the door to slow the car stops working and it then speeds to the top of the shaft.
@Freezfy Elevators have enough force to decapitate or sever a person while in motion. There have been quite a few reported fatal incidents when someone got stuck between the elevator car and the floor.

It doesn't look like it fell to the bottom. If so, they might have actually been okay if they'd stayed on. Well, better off than if it had fallen and they'd stayed on. And, I don't mean to judge the father in his split-second realization and decision to jump off before his daughter, but man if he'd made it and she didn't, he'd hate himself.

The reason they would have died if the elevator fell would be that the elevator is falling faster than them so they would be stuck on the ceiling of the elevator the whole time it was falling so when the elevator actually hit the ground they would come down and hit the ground really hard, which could lead to a fatal injury of just straight out kill them.
Its the hurry up and wait elevator. Genius in design. Very efficient in the fact that it keeps moving.... until we learn that it was built by the polish
@drippingtalon actually that's not the moral of the story because had the girl gone first the dad would have died. the only reason they both made it out alive is because the dad went first and by the time the space started closing in on them he was safe and the girl was safe also since she could fit through. If she had gone first he would not be able to fit through once the gap began closing in

The elevator is obviously broken and it was falling down like 10+ stories high and when it hit the bottom the wire and the thing ( What you call them the things that attach to the elevator and help it move up and down.. ) break down due the the super impact it did.
I doubt that would have killed anyone. It looks like it got pulled to the absolute top and slammed into the stoppers.
Elevators are all created with a type of "Anti-drop" locks. Even if you cut the cable, the room will lock in place, if the system failed, power shut down, etc - it auto locks. The system has to disengage the locks to move it. No power = locks clamp down. No prevention for a glitch that causes it to keep pulling it to the top though.
@xRawlins - Yes, you can get killed. Back in August 1983 I lived in the Manhattanville projects in NYC, I saw a 7 year old girl killed when an elevator that was stuck between floors moved. Several people got off the elevator, but there were so many more left. I was standing on the 9th floor and the elevator floor is at eye level to me, I was 13. The parents placed the 7 year old girl on the elevator floor to jump off, but the elevator moved and crushed her, folder her in half between floors.
@xRawlins umm did you NOT see how they were getting OUT when it started to go up? You go ahead and put your body half way out an elevator and see what happens when your body meets the top of that floors ceiling....you will be split in two.

A similar thing happened in India and a little girl was dragged floors down and gored to death. These are preventable accidents. Good that these two got out.

The elevator is obviously broken and it was falling down like 10+ stories high and when it hit the bottom the wire and the thing ( What you call them the things that attach to the elevator and help it move up and down.. ) break down due the the super impact it did.

elevators are heavy. alot heavier than a person, and ceilings are hard, and unmoving.
if a elevator, is going up with a person, the wall wont move, and the elevator wont stop. the people would get crushed.

I doubt that would have killed anyone. It looks like it got pulled to the absolute top and slammed into the stoppers.
Elevators are all created with a type of "Anti-drop" locks. Even if you cut the cable, the room will lock in place, if the system failed, power shut down, etc - it auto locks. The system has to disengage the locks to move it. No power = locks clamp down. No prevention for a glitch that causes it to keep pulling it to the top though.

@xRawlins - Yes, you can get killed. Back in August 1983 I lived in the Manhattanville projects in NYC, I saw a 7 year old girl killed when an elevator that was stuck between floors moved. Several people got off the elevator, but there were so many more left. I was standing on the 9th floor and the elevator floor is at eye level to me, I was 13. The parents placed the 7 year old girl on the elevator floor to jump off, but the elevator moved and crushed her, folder her in half between floors.

@xRawlins umm did you NOT see how they were getting OUT when it started to go up? You go ahead and put your body half way out an elevator and see what happens when your body meets the top of that floors ceiling....you will be split in two.
