He made some good points, but what makes a plug-in car a better or worse choice isn't just the price vs. electric autonomy. There are many factors to consider and my initial impression is that overall the Volt is in a segment above the Prius.
both great cars the prius is awsome on gas and has alot of great things but the volt looks so much better than the prius....i like the sport look to the car gets great power for what it is little expensive but well worth the money my wife traded her camary for a volt and we love it great car gm hit a home run on this
Plug in Hybrids = Inferior Electric cars with low mileage
If you want a real Electric car, get the Tesla Model S, it gives you 300 miles per charge 100% electric and comes with an charging cord that will give you 150 miles in just 30 minutes. Plus you can plug it in to a generator (the same generator that powers your house or your business) to plug it in to your car and it'll give you more than 100 miles and less than one gallon (depending on the generator)
@alicazer 'real' electric cars' are too impractical right now. Plus even if it was practical people despise change and have to be slowly introduced to the concept, that what i think anyway
the volt has been talked about because if a battery fire issuse after an accident ... i would rather buy a prius or a camry hybrid, and install a "enginer" system in it, for it to plug in for a cheaper plug in car ... to look at the enginer kit go to enginer [dot] us
Very intersting notion about the cafe rules which makes the car makers even produce cars like this. I drove them both and definitively loved the power of the volt.
the toyota prius is the best hybryd on the road no doubt and atleast toyota steps up to fix problems that arent even their fault the reason the pedals were sticking was because people had 2 and 3 floor mats in the drivers side floor. and how come chevy is buying back their volt o thats right they keep catching on freakin fire oh but you dont hear that on the news do you. i garuntee the reason is gm is government motors
@SkullFrog2 The accelleration problems were not because people had 2-3 floormats in their cars.. Where did you pull that fact out of? Chevy isn't buying back their Volts, either. There were no reports of fires from consumer's volts. The only fires that happened were from the NHTSA's neglect to unplug the battery after the crash testing was done. It happened 2 weeks later. 'Government motors' has nothing to do with this.
My wife works 5 miles from the house after work she goes to the gym and might tack on an additional 2 miles in errands well below the range of the electric battery. The way she drives now she puts our prius in 40mpg range a car that can easily get 45mpg but she rather wait till the last minute to leave and race stop signs. So the plug in prius car is talor made for our life. We have made but a few big trips with the car 1500 miles to Phoenix one time. This car will save us thousands.
FYI, I am from PROTON Malaysia and we have got the Volt just last week from USA and last year we got a Prius and an Insight for our benchmarking exercise. We tested them all and the Volt is a clear winner. design, beauty , technology and class the Volt is the winner and the true king of the Hybrids....
The volt isn't a plug in hybrid, it's a range extended electric car, the engine only generates power for the batteries and only sends power to the wheels if the battery is close to flat and you need to accelerate quickly, but that happens very rarely
Some of you people really kill me. How does and electric or hybrid car look gay? The gayest car out there is the Jeep Wrangler. I see more gay people driving them than the Prius. Oh by the way. Yes I am gay and I do own a Prius. I got it because it looks like a hybrid car and gets great fuel economy.
What happens when the Leaf's battery ties at mile 100. With a full charge and all 9 gallons of our gas tank full we are going well over 340 miles ... The pure electric car has a place in the world but its only for those with short commutes and no need to go outside of a 100 mile radius of your house. Considering we have racked up 2200 miles on our Volt during month 1 we would be dead in the water with a Leaf.
Tesla is bad ass BUT you can't buy the 300 mile range S for the price of a volt. Tesla S STARTS at $57,000 dollars and goes up to sub-80,000 dollars when you want to go 300 miles. So, unless you meant you can go by two Volts for the price of a SINGLE Tesla S I dont agree. :)
Buy a $40,000.00 electric car to save gas? But how about my electric bills? Hybrid cars charge up its battery for free without having to use home electricity. I suspect electric companies are planning to create stations nationwide or around the world for plug-in cars where you can swipe your card to pay or bill you like a typical utility expense. Save gas but raise utility bills? I don’t get it!
The amount of electricity used to charge the Volt's lithium Ion batteries is minimal. In Pennsylvania I am paying 12 cents a kWh. It costs me about $1.35 cents to charge every day. Its not a lot of electricity. Plus with the Volt, I can always gas up if needed and get 37MPG when I use up the battery. I can't say the Leaf has that luxury nor does Tesla, the Chinese built Coda's or the Fiskers.
I find American car makers just rush to catch up with foreign car makers like TOyota by throwing something together that isn't well made. Heck, even their normal cars that have been around for decades are poorly made. You hear story after story of your friends who buy brand new American, break down within months and need repairs.
Toyota is so reliable and its track record proves that. I'd never trust anything outside of Toyota nad perhaps Honda.
I have owned European, Japanese and American cars a lot the last 13 years. I drive approximately 30Kto 35K miles a year on each of our vehicles.American cars have made strides in their quality, performance and design the last 10 years. The Volt attests to that. This video is also comparison of an electrically driven vehicle versus a hybrid. Its apples to oranges. In that case, GM beat Toyota to the punch if you want to get technical. GM's warranty warps Toyota's too. 100K WARRANTY.
@ZeeSSman1978 well you won't need a warranty for a toyota within the first 100,000 miles:) You will for a GM. I've known friends who bought brand new GM's and within months of their purchase, they've needed repairs! Word of mouth is the biggest promotion and that is why Toyota has been number 1 this long.
In the future, who knows but for right now....i will trust foreign made over american made any day of the week!
Choose from one of three battery pack options to suit typical driving needs: 160, 230, or 300 miles per charge. Concerned with Range Anxiety? Like the Roadster, the Model S is engineered to plug into nearly any outlet, anywhere in the world. With the ability to recharge in 45 minutes, the car begs to be driven everywhere you want to go.
Good revue good points I sold Toyota I don't hate gm although they killed the ev1 and Toyota was afraid that gm was going to beat them so they created the Prius how ironic to see the who side by side
chevrolet volt 40K dollars cough cough. for that piece of shit car? it only gets about 40 miles electric you say? DAMN for 49K you can get a TESLA S all electric car that gets 300 miles per charge and drives like an aston martin and is already in the market for purchase. For that kind of money i would buy a TESLA
You need to do your homework. Tesla S is gorgeous first and foremoasr. However, To go 300 miles in the Tesla S you need to 'cough cough' up over 70k for the higher end models. Volt goes 30 miles on electric by the way not 40. Then the gas generator drives the Volt's electric motors at about 35 to 37 miles per gallon. We are averaging a 95 MPG equivalent now that my wife has a charging station at work. Before the charging station it was abut 59 MPG in our Volt.
@ZeeSSman1978 Volt averages 35 miles from electricity; however, many consumers are reporting 45-50 miles+ from pure electricity. It all depends on driving style.
People who don't introduce themselves are highly suspect and insecure about not being held accountable for the crap that comes out of their mouths. That's a telltale sign to stop paying attention to the pollution spewing from his biased, pointless review.
Its apples to oranges. The Volt costs more because it is loaded with options and technology not baked into the Prius. The Prius is a good car but its a hybrid. Its not an extended range electric like the Volt. The Volt also comes with a much better warranty. I think the Prius has proven itself , buts its not in the same league as the volt.
He made some good points, but what makes a plug-in car a better or worse choice isn't just the price vs. electric autonomy. There are many factors to consider and my initial impression is that overall the Volt is in a segment above the Prius.

Chevrolet Volt, $33.5K vs Toyota Prius, $23.8K
Volt: 37mpg * 9.3 gallons = 344.1 miles for gas only
Plus: avg 35 miles extra for electric only
Total:379.1 miles
Prius: 51mpg * 9.3 gallons = 484.3 miles for both gas + electric but Prius has actually 11.9 gallons, range up to 606.9 miles!
Does Volt worth it to you?
