@Jastro88 They make sense if you take it in context of the musical, 1776. That's where they got the lyrics for this. It's kind of a mash-up of a couple different mantras from that musical. If you go look up a synopsis of the musical and the lyrics of some of the songs, it will probably make more sense.
okay, so when i first watched this ... i fell in love, and i was thinking that i loved this other guy, but he looked really familiar, not knowing from where tho. then today i read the little side comment, and realize that i listen to vocal spectrem every chance i get. i love this vidio and i love you :) by far my favorit person on youtube :)
This is a RIDICULOUSLY Great tag. Definitely one of the ones that got me inspired to start multitracking.
Firemanbucs, think more positive thoughts about your voice. Like you I top out at G#/Ab but really thats 2 notes away from Tenor high c, C5 which is the highest standard note in Opera repertoire I think. (Wikipedia). Sure there are higher notes but who cares. In pop repertoire a male hardly ever goes above that B,bflat.
If you can hit A in full voice just get lessons to develop your mix.
That's what I'm doing. Developing a mix voice with speech level singing. I like to consider myself a 2nd tenor rather than baritone though I hit bass notes rather easily. I just don't warmup :-p)
Well as a baritone, I envy you greatly. You have one of the purest sounding voices I have ever heard (second to Bing Crosby lol) On a good I'm only topping out on a high Ab... And it has to be a VERY good day haha.. And by the way Tim it looks like Simon is eating his mic. Must have dipped his mic in some vodka or something. =)
Well I'd say most days, I can comfortably sing a high C or C# in "full voice." Good days: I can sing higher & Bad days: not so much! haha. I've trained classically, so it's not a pure chest voice up there.. it's a headvoice/mix, which is better and more comfortable than just flat out belting. Or watch my 9 Octaves video to see me crap out on a G or something like that! ;) - TW
@VSTenor Tim Waurick, in my opinion, you are the best tenor in barbershop. I shook your hand at midwinter in Pasadena a couple years ago. I have purchased Tim Tracks and heard almost everything you have done. I go to UW-Madison and am a real big fan. Thank you for what you have done to barbershop! keep it up! -Jack

Vocal Spectrum came and sang at the chapter in Arkansas I was a member of. I missed it because I was on a choir trip, but I heard they did phenomenally. How cool that you got to meet him.
Also, I can't be sure, but I think the bass in this video goes to the 7th and then resolves to the 6th. It's actually written with the bass jumping the octave from "Be-eee" and the bari moving below the bass and resolving from the 7th to the 6th.
This is bloody brilliant for sure, but I'm curious; what is going on with the tuning on the second bari/bass note of the word "be"?
I know this sounds picky, but I don't think it really hurts the tag that much. I'm just curious where the lack of a locked chord there is coming from. It's a very delicate chord, so it's kind of hard to tell. Despite the fact that it sounds like a fairly solid interval, I'm thinking the baritone's second note is the source...

Cool, that explains a lot actually. Bb and A are definitely going to break the "locked" quality of the chord. So the chord doesn't only resolve; it goes from dissonant to harmonious in the chord transition. This a really cool effect but, seeing as I have not heard it before in barbershop, I can't help but wonder if it's legal for competition.
Also, I appreciate all the comments posted to humor my curiosity.
The combination is not contestable. There are certain rules against the major 7th being in the bass, and as far as I know, the M7 must always be above the root. This tag is pushing the limits a bit as far as that goes, but hey, it's pretty isn't it? =)
That dissonance sets up for a BEAUTIFUL resolve when the baritone drops it back into the right key. Holy lord. Does that not give you shivers up the spine?

The answer was posted by bordonthestreet, but since there are so many comments now, here are the lyrics again:
"Till then, till then
I am as I ever was and ever shall be
Yours, yours, yours, yours, yours...
For God's sake, John, sit down!"
The entire song is in the following video:
/watch?v=TY3TubZdYqA
The tag is adapted from the John and Abigail Adams duet -- jump to 3;40 in the video for the beginning of the "tag."
CarlyCarlyW 2 years ago
This is bloody brilliant for sure, but I'm curious; what is going on with the tuning on the second bari/bass note of the word "be"?
I know this sounds picky, but I don't think it really hurts the tag that much. I'm just curious where the lack of a locked chord there is coming from. It's a very delicate chord, so it's kind of hard to tell. Despite the fact that it sounds like a fairly solid interval, I'm thinking the baritone's second note is the source...
Any thoughts?

Cool, that explains a lot actually. Bb and A are definitely going to break the "locked" quality of the chord. So the chord doesn't only resolve; it goes from dissonant to harmonious in the chord transition. The combination is not contestable. There are certain rules against the major 7th being in the bass, and as far as I know, the M7 must always be above the root. This tag is pushing the limits a bit as far as that goes, but hey, it's pretty isn't it? =)
