so mad, i was just in malaysia for a minute and didnt get an opportunity to ride down to singapore! but i got to play sf vanilla in kuala lumpur. @ berjaya time square. next time, i hope to make my way down there
they were filming this during the national day parade, thats why there were jets and choppers with the national flag flying about. bad timing to film guys.....
In the 90s we used to have quantity - tons of smaller arcades around every corner. Nowadays it's all about quality - we have pretty well equipped arcades at most major shopping malls. Glad you guys liked it here.
Yeah the country looks nice but I would rather live somewhere where i don't have to worry about getting sent to jail for ten years for wanting to smoke some weed. What a fucked up judicial system they have going over there.
from Livermann : Just to make things clear, those helicopters and planes flying overhead was all part of a rehearsal for our National Day parade. It's pretty much like an equivalent to Independence Day for Americans. No we're not some sort of totalitarian state that likes to flaunt their military. We're just another normal country that likes to flaunt their military.
So that explains the F-15s and all flying all over alright people? :)
@Gen3si4 I just came from the Chicago Airshow today, and at the end of the radio broadcast that follows the show, the deejays said something 'like' this, "We're all in this shithole together, and we're not bad people. But don't nudge us the wrong way because the guile theme still goes with everything according to wikipedia"
Wow...didn't mean to offend anyone. So, you're saying the average family there has 700 bucks to toss down on console equipment, or just yours? If they do, your arcade scene will die just like ours has. This is just the trend I've seen for myself. Arcades are popular in places where people can't afford to play at home. It was even the same here in the US. When arcades were popular here, the games were to expensive to play at home. Again, sorry for any offense, none was intended.
that's not how it works at all. arcades are still very popular in japan as well. plus the average family living in singapore has more money than the average US family. arcades are the places were the players can all gather to play at high level (since online in fighting games is not a very good way to play, as even a milisecond of lag can make difference, unlike in shooters were it'd go by unnoticed)
It really doent go by unnoticed in shooters. Call Of Duty is the worst game for it, for example, you may empty almost a whole clip in a guy and he shoots you but then on the kill cam it doesnt show you firing a shot and theres other times where you may see your kill cam and it shows you shooting to the left of the other player but actually you had your crosshair over the person. One of the main reasons Battlefield is better is because it has dedicated servers so its much smoother
@dannkk lol! so you're saying that if people can cook at home, restaurants all over the world will have to close down; if beer can be stored in home refrigerators, bars will wind up; and if online shopping ever becomes possible, malls will shut down? The last time I checked, none of those industries are in danger of going extinct. Players gather in quality arcades for the sake of SOCIALISING and AMBIENCE.
@dannkk fyi, many of those players who frequent Bugis do have consoles at home. Very often, they practise at home before they put their skills on display in public. Most 7th gen console packages in Singapore cost less than 700USD, even when you include MadCatz or Hori fight sticks, while many of those players spend about 100USD per month playing in the arcades despite already having at least one console at home. So saying that arcades are a cheaper alternative to consoles is simply untrue.
@dannkk You still have no idea why arcades are still popular in large modern cities with a very condense population and great public transportation like Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, etc. People in such cities live in very small apartments, so they spend more time outside of home than in it. That means meeting with friends to play games at arcades and gaming centers rather than cramming them all into your apartment to play on a console.
@dannkk sad to tell you that we too have consoles at home but does that means we should be staying at home like you do?you sounds like the consoles means so much to you that you cant visit the arcades or it cost so much that you yourself cant afford to visit the arcade?either way you looks pathetic, just so you know that we usually meet for arcade then dinner or other activities like movies later of the day.you will be better off watching it online tho as im afraid the ticket will be too costy f
Absolutely beautiful footage of Singapore, I would love to go there someday. Just wanted to say I've been a fan of you guys ever since the days of lag kick lol.
Great vid guys.. I am one of the few ang mo's (white guys) that plays at Bugis regularly.. Excellent promo for Singapore. Glad the world can finally see the quality of play in this country! You guys should do more of these city guides
thier arcade scene is so gdlike...that is sick...just fucking insane. the place with the big screens for Marvel was like, the fuckin enterprise for Fighting games..lol
10:33, That was Singapore warning too lock down the city. Why? because two Americans came too Singapore, and was about to bring their information back too the States. Singapore. Does. Not. Play. >:(.
@Gootecks Sad to say, but we don't have that in the US because people have to much money. People that want it, can afford a monitor, console and game. Notice how it's kind of dying in Japan. They can also afford consoles. But then...Korea, Singapore, Mexico...they all have arcade scenes. They can't all afford this stuff, so they end up in lan centers and arcades.
@dannkk LOL that is bullshit about singaporeans not being able to afford this stuff. alot of these people have their own consoles at home, but it's just a different environment in the arcade.
@dannkk I dont know you, but it seems you are living in your own world. You still think that US is the richest in the world. There are many other cities in the world with so much higher GDP per capita than your cities. Ignorance is what I believe. Or just plain arrogance. Go travel around the world and open your eyes.
Amazing episode guys, I'd really enjoyed that episode... you guys should have a special on the travel channel and just find the best arcades around the world(with the occasional hotel). Please make that happen.
Just an observation from someone who used to live in LA and now lives in Singapore. The reason the arcade scene here is strong is because public transportation here is one of the best in the world for such a small country with a high population density. So travel to the arcade is actually not a big deal not like in LA where you have to drive long distances to get to an arcade.
@donsdgr81 that doesn't mean anything. here in nyc, our transportation system is pretty good also. you can get anywhere via bus or subway and yet there are not many arcades here. arcade scene is dead in nyc, even worse than L.A. it's a cultural difference, more so than transportation.
@lucirz last great arcade in nyc is chinatown fair but that shit is gone cause they don't make enough money to stay alive. there's the new "next level arcade" but that's not really an arcade, it's more of a gaming center, where u basically rent to play consoles really.
Gootecks actually missed another 3 2-player setups for AE in Bugis. So that's a total of 8 linked setups, 6 head-head, and 3 2-player setups so a total of 20 players can play.
Damn if I knew that Gooteks and Mike Ross came here I would have went to Bugis to play. The place is just about 10 minutes walk from my workplace so I got there every Friday. I met Mike Ross when I was in LA during SCR.
daaammmn ... and I thought Americans loved their flag waving .... lol ... singaporians take the " don't let the flag touch the ground " rule to new levels ... literallly !!!

LOL @ 7:18 when Mike Ross says he's gonna get blown away by the singapore dudes but doesn't show him getting his ass kicked. My guess here is that he slapped them up!
Just to make things clear, those helicopters and planes flying overhead was all part of a rehearsal for our National Day parade. It's pretty much like an equivalent to Independence Day for Americans.

No we're not some sort of totalitarian state that likes to flaunt their military. We're just another normal country that likes to flaunt their military.
