Taiwan can in theory diversify its export markets, but it cannot diversify its energy source. It won't be 20-40 years, but the mainland will be able to profoundly affect the Taiwan economic climate without firing a shot or just a few shots. Taiwan's energy source is totally exposed because it is an island so close to the mainland. The Taiwan business community will demand better certainty or they will leave. The USA cannot do much because it sees the more it does the worse it gets for Taiwan.

The mainland can use attrition of various degrees and forms, progressively more assertive, in the coming decades. The USA will not be able to interfere. For one thing, the US cannot ascertain if the people on the island will prefer war or Hong Kong II, say in 2040.
One day Taiwan will have to choose, 30-50 years at the most.

@edmondle I never said that the UN recognized Taiwan as a independent country, but other world governments do, one such is the United States, who believes in freedom and is selling military weapons to Taiwan, there is the UK who has now sign a new trading agreement with Taiwan and even the UN is starting to open up to Taiwan in terms of diplomatic missions and other areas, the US now has diplomatic relations with Taiwan so im not trying to be smart im just stating whats real , cause im not dumb

China is already a number one super power in military and economics. The only problem is the one child policy. Its lonely to be a one child in the family. China should allowed to have two child policy. Three child policy good is good luck.

One child policy doesn't apply to all chinese. frome wikipedia, 35.9% of China's population is currently subject to the one-child restriction.

The major advantage of a highrise is the ease of inter-office communication when an electronic means does not suffice.
Documents can be shuttled in very neat ways with a highrise.
This is great for large organizations.

Is Taipei Chinese? For a while longer may be or may be not. The people in Taiwan may not consider Taiwan Chinese.
How much longer would the ROC linger on? 30, 40, 50 years? Eventually the ROC will wither and die and Taiwan will be a part of the PRC.
The mainland would likely never use direct force on Taiwan, but how can Taiwan withstand the increasing pressure on its island economy forever? Its energy link is hopelessly exposed.
Businesses will shun Taiwan more and more.

Generally, those who fail to conquer need highrises.
The US has more land by conquest, so it does not need many highrises.
Earthquake is far less damaging in the US because most residential buildings are one to two story wood frame buildings.
You need the land to have the trees for the lumber, and something cheaper to build on.
Highrises look nice, but the underlying reason is that China failed to conquer useful arable land, as much of north America.
