all you need to know :P

  • Linus is right, Vista is the shit. If you know how to properly maintain a computer, you shouldn't have any problems.

  • @SynysterCondom Oh my god I love you , your not doing the hole " Vista sucked " bs , it was actualy pretty good and I loved using my computer when it had it . People just like to talk bull about every thing .

  • Wait can't you just format a normal HDD with the 4096 bite option?

  • hit 1 to hear linus say tell

  • HIT 2 TO SEE LINUS SAY COMPUTER

  • "Properly prepare for how I use it"?. Ehem. Like what? I don't know if this disk will be used for tiny small datafiles, or video the next day from the other. I think actually i had one of these. I had about 500000 tiny 1.2kb files on it..it got overheated, starting to make click sounds.. I wouldn't go near this again. Ever.

  • @StoneOakvalley if you got a Green drive theres your problem. Green drives were made to use less power than typical drives, however, they sacrificed alot to do this. i suggest getting a Blue or, if you have the money, Black/Velociraptor.

  • What happened to your hair?

  • Can i use this without jumper

  • when i saw the title i thought it was a drive with a 4kB capacity lol

  • @uut0

    what an asshole...

  • just to throw it out there, I got two of these drives and formatted them in linux using parted. While it looked like it worked, when I started copying data to it, when it got about 40% full it completely freaked out and wouldn't accept any more data with tons of other errors.

Did some research, as of the linux kernel 2.6.34 the advanced drive is supported. I believe I used an older one and that may have caused the problem. the drives are bricks now and need to get new ones

  • when I read the title I thought you were gonna show us an old school hard drive with only 4kb of storage.

  • Hi Linus, Do you ship international and do you allow pay via paypal?

  • Yes I love windows 7 just saying I love 7

  • For my computer build I'll get an advanced format wd green 1tb and a Vertex 2 50GB SSD :D

  • What's with the "park/unpark (LCC)" problem? I'm thinking about buying a WD20EARS and read a bit about this issue.

  • i love vista.

  • @Virgle144 yes vista is a great os but windows 7 is a fantastic os. you just need to try it once and you will fall in love with it. i am saving up money to get a copy of windows 7 premium.

  • I bought this drive about 2 weeks ago and now i hate it...it's like sleeping all the time, 3-4 second delays appear often when doing certain things and its annoying...so i wouldn't recommend using green caviar drive for installing operating system on

  • I think they should be focusing on bringing the cost/capacity radio of SSD drives down.

  • What if you have two partitions but the second partition is only for virtual memory/page file? Would you still need to use that align software?

  • has it got lost in the post:? havent received it yet

    :)

  • As always good job but for the love of god remove the windows vista pc that connects to that screen, windows 7 the best!

  • what program do i use to format my 2 western digital external hard drives?

  • Watch the official GTX 480 DX11 GAMES VIDEO

    Metro 2033, just cause2 :D

    /watch?v=THQ_KGISY6k

  • can anyone tell if i have to mount the jumper (windows xp) for the wd5000aaks..

  • I have this exact same drive, for storage.. yep it's quite slow, but not a Single write error ever.

  • :O This video is actually really helpful. Thanks.

  • this drive operates at 5300RPM, , not 7200

  • Thanks for your info... it is posible to make three partitions of it still for with the same feature>?

  • If I format the drive under win vista will it be alligned correctly under xp later on? Planning to use as an USB drive! Please get back to me!!!

  • everytime i go on the site i wanna buy everything... good video. :) keep them comming

  • awesome video champ

  • Heh, good thing I have Windows Vista. But great tip, nevertheless.

  • Hey Linus, how about adding it to Windows Home Server?

  • how old is he?

  • @xDjAsOnF im guessing he´s about 24-26..

  • Linus is so smart. =]

  • cool vid

  • Forgot to turn off the screen saver ;)

  • nice.thanks 5star vid n ifo

  • Good tip about EARS never thought about that. At least I had formetted my drives under Server 2008 so alignment was all good.

Is there any performance improvement formatting as 4k (or 4k multiples) block size?

  • SDDs have failures and errors too. The difference is that it marks defective cells as dead and stops using them resulting in a continually dwindling storage space.

  • Thanks Linus...good infor

  • Exveryone hates HDD man, but not everybody can afford buying a SSD :(

  • scuzzy ftw niggers

  • NICE HARD DRIVE, i hope it comes in a Black Edition, for more speed

  • i love NCIX

  • @superwiicrazy me too :)

  • I have 4 of these drives as well as two older ones on a raid setup, now I am wondering if I should have used the realligning software. The raid controller is on the mainboard and it's a Intel ICH10.

    Don't suppose anyone knows.

  • digital ears ftw

  • another great video Linus!

  • I can watch him waaaay longer then most others he at least knows his stuff and talks good which is a big factor for me in good vids.

    5/5

  • @jobrien2001 But he knows what hes doing

  • @jobrien2001

    GTFO.

  • Why the hell are you using Vista?

  • Hey nothing wrong with vista I love it!

  • I like Vista. With the latest patches on a decent machine it's as stable and fast as Windows 7.

My work machine is Windows Vista and regularly goes 30-60 days between reboots.

  • Really? Guess I must be the unlucky one haha. I've moved on to Linux now so I'm happy. Actually, you wouldn't happen to know this but is the WIndows 7 OS built on the XP OS?

  • Windows 7 is based upon Win Server 2007 which i based on Vista.

Basically XP and 2003 are the last of their kind.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes its a fukin typo it is Win Server 2008.

  • @NCIXcom My XP Machine goes months without rebooting. Havent tested my win 7 PC yet. But Vista sucks lol

  • @NCIXcom I like that. If it works, use it! Ive been using vista for 2 years and I have never had any problems with it.

  • @NCIXcom i prefer vista over 7 for gaming. you get the customize game feature that you dont have in 7

  • @NCIXcom I agree, I also have Vista Ultimate on my PC(CPU-I5-750 4 GB DDR3-1333, HD4870) and it runs great, I have tried Win 7 too but I didn`t notice any increse in performance. Interesting fact I` m from Latvia and in latvian vista means chicken :D :D :D

  • @Ards777 Nice! Now I know some Latvian! :)

  • @NCIXcom you're probably right..and but that's not including the registry adjustments or i should say..CORRECTIONS. not to mention other main o.s. adjustments to make the system run at least 10 to 15% better as it should out of the oem package or retail box. I skipped vista, but i learned all of this the hard way tweaking my friend's vista home premium machine he bought prebuilt 3 years ago. win 7 home premium vs vista home premium needs 512mb less ram to run same stuff. this is R.T.testing.

  • @NCIXcom my laptop, which cost about 400€ (i think about 550-600$) couldn't really run vista together with some games all that well, it used up 44% of my memory on idle and about 30-40% of my processor (T3000@1.8ghz) that's hy i installed XP, tho i need a 64x version, cuz it only recognizes 3,4gb memory, while i have 4 installed :S

  • @andrei644 Vista is not very optimized, but if you have the kind of PC Linus has, you can run Vista fine even when you try to click in a folder!

  • @andrei644 Because I have had no problems with it,If it ain't broke, don't fix it .

  • I just got the WD Caviar 500GB Blue. Is that good? xD

  • hey nice tips and nice drive. i'll be listening out for the ears drive hitting my letter box soon

    :D

  • Hi Linus,

again a great video with a lot of information. I really appreciate your hard work.

    Take care and many greetings.

    FuenfamTag

  • 4kB?

  • watch and listen and you will understand (its not the storage)

  • Ha ha ha even windows thinks he's boring

  • My EARS are burning.

  • is it the same as when i use format (from cmd) and type /A:4096 ?

  • Comment removed

  • linus knows his stuff :)

nice tutorial thnx for that :)

  • so its suppose to increase performance in xp? is it going to load progams and games much faster. If so, how much faster

  • This works on ubuntu linux?

  • I didn´t get it well, it has less chances to get errors?

  • not really, from what he said, it just increases sector size

which makes you waste more space per error, but spend less space for marking errors

not so much as a "performance" gain in terms of speeds

  • thx

  • "You should check it out here."

    *crickets*

  • my god.. all of you fucking "first" guys are ruining youtube..

    OT: niice vid linus :D

  • Yeah they are pathetic, unfortunately ignoring them does not make them go away.
