@muffemod And that happens like... one in one thousand? besides onboard raid controlers are very reliable and you also loose youre data with JTBOD which has no performance boost only connects separate phisical HDDs.
@foxman105 One in one thousand alright let's use that. With millions of raid controllers out there it's pretty safe to say that raid controllers fail on a daily occurrence. It happens more often then you think. With JBOD you don't lose the data if the controller dies. The performance boost is nominal at best with SSDs, which lose TRIM support in raid configuration. Also firmware updates to the drives may require a complete format in raid configuration but not in JBOD.
@muffemod RAID controllers fail on daily occurrence, VGAs fail on daily occurrence, Motherboards, cpus, RAM... everything fails on daily occurrence. Its a risk that you cant eliminate. Now when we have 2 discs in RAID0 the risk of failure doubles. is less reliable than a sigle disc but it also (theoretically) doubles speed. Id you have important data just store them on a different HDD (which might also fail on daily occurrence). Oh... how many times have you updated HDDS firmware?
@foxman105 Your math is flawed because the risk of data loss in RAID0 is actually more than double, because you forgot to include the chance that the raid controller fails in the calculation.
@muffemod In my opinion its still worth the performance. I have RAID 0 in my PC for the 2nd year now and no issues have yet occurred. I've already written... if you want safety create a backup on a third disk or simply dont use raid.
@foxman105 I did that already you smart arse & didn't get a straight answer, hence why i asked on this video duh. So why don't people like You, Go F@*! Yourselves! :)
@TheTechGuy007 Then you cant use search engines. When you type in RAID SETUP first 4 links explain EVERYTHING... so my answer is still the same UTFG.
I can't really understand why raid 0 is a bit faster. It's unsecure if one hard drive fails, then you lose all your data. I would choose raid 1 for security. Then i have a backup of my operating system. But that Is my opinion.
@tuke8 The amount of space you have when using RAID 0 is based on the SMALLEST of the two (or more) drives, so if you have a 500GB and a 1TB, you're only going to get 1TB of space (500GB + 500GB). So yes, it's a good idea to use identical HDDs.
can any1 help me? can u set up RAID if my motherboard do not support RAID, and i dont ave the hardware to set if up. basically im asking if u can set up RAID just by software. please reply as soon as possible
@c01cullen 4 SSDs on a RAID0 sound like trouble to me, because if a single disk fails, your whole data is lost. But SSDs are really reliable, and you're saying you have a back up.
I am getting a SSD (that supports trim) for W7 64 OS, and i intend to have 2 160GB 7,200 HDD's in raid 0 for game files etc, and a 750 GB HDD for storage. My MB M4A89TD PRO, has 6x6Gb/s Sata III ports, and in Bios, I can set 1-4, and 5-6 in IDE, AHCI or raid. Please advise as to MB settings. I assume I need 750Gb & Sata DVD-RW in 5 & 6 set IDE. Will TRIM be supported on my SSD if I use raid setting on 1-4 ? Or do I leave it AHCI and use OS to raid other drives?
@TheHeroOfSatan if you have 2 of the 320 gb hard drives and run raid 0 on them, yes they run faster but if one of the hard drives fail the other is unusable as the way raid 0 stores information.
@Anthony152152 thats good because i hate computer data the easer it becomes unusable the happer i am .. i don't like to save anything i don't need . that will be what i will do .. what if i hook up a ssd to my hhd ? would that be ok lol. ?
@TheHeroOfSatan sorrry dude i dont think you could hook up a ssd to a hhd. you might be able to but it would be slower than the ssd by itsslef. raid 0 is only a big benifet if you have 2 ssds or 2 normall hdds. raid 0 on a ssd iss really fast, and raid 0 on a normal hdd is faster but not as fast as a ssd
@TheHeroOfSatan you could tryy but the RAID space would only be as bit as the biggest hard drive. so if you have a 1tb hdd and a 60gb ssd the raid space in raid 0 would be 120gb across the 2 and on the hdd the rest of the space i think you can just store normally on
@TheCheapWayGamer No, you have to reinstall your OS when changing to any type of RAID setup, as all data is erased from the HDDs you're using for the RAID as part of the process of configuring a RAID array.
@jayketterman2 If you put a 250GB HDD together with a 500GB HDD the RAID configuration will only use 500GB of the 750GB total, so you will lose 250GB but it will work.
@FrancekPirosrancek "can you have 2 drives in raid 0 then those 2 in raid 1 with another drive?" yes, thats called RAID 5 AKA RAID 5. its fast and safe. its really weird, you think you come up with a new memory config, but realize there already is a RAID for it... best are raid 5 and raid 10. raid 5 is what you described and raid 10 (aka RAID 1+0) is 2 hds in RAID 0 and 2 hds in RAID 1 backing up the other 2
Just had 2 quick questions, when you set up a Raid 0 between two drives does it only appear as one drive when you boot into your OS? Also if the two drives you are using have different speeds how does this affect it?
Hey man, i love your vids, very informative and straight to the point. So I wanted to ask how many drives for the fastest raid 0 setup? Basically, after 2 drives on raid 0, adding anymore drives is the performance gain faster, or fastest on 2 drives on raid 0?
How do i install an OS using RAID 0? And also, if the data is shared across 2 hard drives, how would i go about deleting something, if i deleted something would it automatically delete on the other hard drive or would i manually have to delete it off the other hard drive?
@matwocents raid 0 is good for combining 2 equal capacity size drives into 1 large drive. it is also good against autority trying to undelete your files in order to prosecute you for illegal materials.
2. for either raid set up do I have to have the same manufacture HDD ? like a Seagate and a Western Digital.
The reason being that I want to have a gaming rig but my Fiancé needs something to store her graphic design work, and possibly a simple FTP setup for those files.
@kasatka4520 A compromise between raid 0 and raid 1 is raid 5. But what I suggest doing is having the OS and all of your programs on a raid 0 configuration. And then buy a 3rd high capacity HDD and use that for your storage. That way you can have the speed of raid 0 but with added security without messing with raid 5.
A1: You can have a RAID 1 and RAID 0 set up at the same time... even with RAID 5 running alongside those two as long as you have enough identical hard drives, enough SATA connections for the hard drives, and if your RAID controller can run them at the same time... or you can have another PCI / PCI-E RAID Controller.
1: It's possible that you have RAID 0 and RAID 1 on your pc (called RAID10,1+0, et al.), provided that you have a minimum of 4 (yes 4) hard disks and if your system supports it through a RAID controller (either integrated on the motherboard or on PCI/ PCI-E card).
2: For a computer of daily graphic design use. I do recommend having RAID10. So she can access them fast + they're backed up.
PS. If ever she is considering on having an archive comp. Set up a comp with RAID 5.
Btw I forgot to mention. Theoretically, it's possible to use RAID 1 on some non-identical HDs. But trust me, not majority of them are. Another thing is that RAID 0 has to have the same exact HD size to the very least.
However, it is recommended to get same manufacturer, model and size HDs to save the hassle because some non-identical HDs are not compatible (even with just the same size) for RAID configurations.
Question for everyone on RAID. If I have 3 500GB hard drives, and I do RAID 0 on two; can I use RAID 1 on the the RAID 0 and the extra 500 GB hard drive, or does it need to be a TB hard drive (instead of the extra 500GB drive), or is it just not possible.
Hi there Nice video :) I have a question ... Is it better/faster to run 2x SSD in raid 0 than just running a single SSD with windows and games, I have just bought a 64GB SSD and thats enought space for me but would it boost my performance if i bought 1 more and run the raid 0 setup ?
@skaterguy288 do a quick youtube "how to set up raid 0" also known as Striped, it is in BIOS where you enable it, then you can enter the Raid BIOS, i havnt done it my self, but ive seen vids on utube explain (or try) i was thinking of doing a SSD raid vid, but darn theyre so expensive, dont have the cash to spend on a vid atm :P
@SutkasFan get two wd caviar blacks 500gb each for $50 each and set it up in raid 0, you will get equal speeds to modern day ssd's, you will save alot of money, and you will have 10 times the capacity :)
@SutkasFan im no expert on how hdd's work but seeing as a single drive can max 300mb/s it means that raid0 can max to 600mb/s. from my research the caviar black in raid0 is the best thing available for your money.
So you've been using it for years with no problems? What helps that time frame? I keep hearing about arrays failing and whatnot. What causes the array to fail? I've heard a SATA unplugging itself makes the array fail.
i wanna do this but my raid notices my CD drive also in raid .. and it doesnt allow it when i try to install windows .. how do i make that one IDE and my HDD's raid i canot choose wich one to make raid :/
i installed raid 0 on my mother oard, but the speed is slow (120 MB/s) because the controllers are made by jmicro, Are there any pci-e cards which can do the job of reaching 200MB/s
Will I be able to do raid 0 on two 80gb 7200rpm hdd? I currently have just one 500gb and is using win7 ultimate 64x. I'm thinking about buying 2 80gb hdd to do raid0 and the 500gb as storage. Will I have to format my 500gb because I want to put my os on the 2 80gb?
RAID is obsolete. With new methods of backing up data such as with external HDD's, there's no need for RAID 1 and beyond. I wouldn't trust RAID 0 either because when one drive fails, everything is lost. I'm using AHCI over two 500GB's disks and I have a 1TB external HDD for backup.
I kinda agree with this statement regarding RAID 1, however, I don't agree that RAID 0 is obsolete. With such a great performance enhancement, I'll take the (minimal) risk to connect programs that I can just reinstall another time. If anything is really important, I have another drive with a lot of space used for storing all of it.
I have 3 drives on my system. One 80GB that I use for Windows, and 2 500GB drives that I use for just storing music, movies, etc. I made a RAID 0 array with the 2 500GB's and there was no change in performance. I guess it didn't matter what config I used for their purpose, but I do install my games onto them and there was no performance change with the games either. So I just decided to use AHCI. I bought the 1TB HDD to backup the RAID. I might try again, I don't know. I hate reinstalling.
After talking to Intel they said that RAID wouldn't benefit me at all for what I use my drives for because files larger than the stripe size will be read at exactly the same speed as on a non-RAID config and virtually all my files are large since I don't have an OS installed on the array. The only benefit the said that RAID could only give me is better space utilization. So unless I buy another drive for the OS, there's no point for me to use it simply for my storage drives.
On a RAID0 array, if one drive fails because of a defect or something, you lose everything on all the drives. Formatting won't do anything if the drive ceases to function. It relies completely on all the drives in the array to be without fault.
Yes. The more drives you add, the higher your chances are of adding a faulty drive to the array. If you use a backup then that's fine. I use a backup as well but it's external because I had an experience where my two other internal storage drives lost their data while testing a program.
mm so if i put 2 in raid 0 ill be fine? by backup i dont mean that i do another hdd for backup.. i mean that i save data that i had downloaded and save them to pendrive and DVDs..
That's basically what I do for my backups. I use a drive image for my Windows drive that I save to my backup drives. Two drives should be alright but it's recommended that they be the same size and model. You can use two different sized drives but on a RAID0 array the largest drive capacity will be reduced to the capacity of the smallest drive. So if you use a 200GB and an 80GB, the 200GB will become an 80GB.
The reason I mentioned this again is because some details was left out in the Video. I also forgot to say, Stripe (raid0) twice the speed of the slowest drive, yes, also twice the size of the smallest drive, so don't Stripe a 500gb with a 160gb. You'll ens up with a 320gb hard drive.
Raid 0 = 500g+500g=1000g, 2 x the speed of the slowest drive, but, if one drive fails, all data is lost ( half of EACH file was on the drive that failed)
Raid 1 = 500g+500g=500g, no speed increase, but, when one drive fails, all data is already mirrored to the second drive, data redundancy. You'll use a similar solution on your company server.
Raid 5 = 500g+500g+500g=1000g
Cheapest best of both worlds, not very reliable. Rebuilding array could take up to 2 days.
yes, you call it raid 10. Both Raid 0 and 1 at the same time, but your motherboard probably doesn't support it. I believe you'll have to buy something similar to a 3ware raid 10 card to try such a solution. The best to go hardware raid if you're looking at game support.
Personally , I'd say, run 4 hard drives, 1 x raid striped ( performance ) and 1 x mirrored ( data safety ) Only windows and installed games on the performance drives.
let me ask this, in raid 0 how do i get the on a USB drive, also do you know if new motherboards come with a raid controller? i'm new to the whole computer building thing but i was just wondering how to do raid 0 since it is the fastest way to setup a configuration for a single hard disk!!
How is it with SSD drive

However, it is recommended to get same manufacturer, model and size HDs to save the hassle because some non-identical HDs are not compatible (even with just the same size) for RAID configurations.

Question for everyone on RAID. If I have 3 500GB hard drives, and I do RAID 0 on two; can I use RAID 1 on the the RAID 0 and the extra 500 GB hard drive, or does it need to be a TB hard drive (instead of the extra 500GB drive), or is it just not possible.
musicgeneration1 1 year ago
If you're using Raid 0 and one of your hard drives dies, do you lose all the data?
lazareus 1 year ago
@lazareus Yes, you do lose all of your data.
musicgeneration1 1 year ago
@lazareus basically yes! so if you are on RAID0 always have external drive backups handy or use mozy.

I recomend you the OCZ Vertex 2 SSD.
It got a 285 MB/s writing speed and 275MB/s reading speed.
The 50 GB version is aproximately 240 Euros.

@SutkasFan
But i think you can find cheaper one.
SutkasFan 1 year ago
@SutkasFan get two wd caviar blacks 500gb each for $50 each and set it up in raid 0, you will get equal speeds to modern day ssd's, you will save alot of money, and you will have 10 times the capacity :)
Phen0mX 1 year ago
@Phen0mX
Does the two WD Caviar black 500 GB hard disks can reach the speed of 250Mb/s writing spead ? Or even 200Mb/s reading speed ?
SutkasFan 1 year ago
@SutkasFan watch this video /watch?v=GHtJtKSw2ws
average write speed = 185mb/s
max write speed = 500mb/s
Phen0mX 1 year ago
@Phen0mX
500Mb/s ?
The limit for the SATA 2, 3Gb/s is 300Mb/s, so how he reached so big high speed ?
BTW i haven't seen an SATA SSD's with that writing speed, not even in RAID 0,
2 SSD's couldn't reach that speed!
Awesome!
SutkasFan 1 year ago
@SutkasFan im no expert on how hdd's work but seeing as a single drive can max 300mb/s it means that raid0 can max to 600mb/s. from my research the caviar black in raid0 is the best thing available for your money.

OK Thanks, i realy appreciate that!

Doesn't a RAID 1 uses the size of the smallest disk? For example, 500gb and 250gb
kenmha 1 year ago
@kenmha Yes, RAID 1 with these 2 drives would show up as a single 250G mirrored. RAID 0 with these 2 drives would show a 500G array (2x250g striped).

So you've been using it for years with no problems? What helps that time frame? I keep hearing about arrays failing and whatnot. What causes the array to fail? I've heard a SATA unplugging itself makes the array fail.
I got a 500GB external backup so data is safe
either way. :)

Snapscape 2 years ago
I kinda agree with this statement regarding RAID 1, however, I don't agree that RAID 0 is obsolete. With such a great performance enhancement, I'll take the (minimal) risk to connect programs that I can just reinstall another time. If anything is really important, I have another drive with a lot of space used for storing all of it.
4 x 64GB Intel X-25E in Raid 0
1 x 2TB Western Digital Caviar Black
Shadowed7 2 years ago
I have 3 drives on my system. One 80GB that I use for Windows, and 2 500GB drives that I use for just storing music, movies, etc. I made a RAID 0 array with the 2 500GB's and there was no change in performance. I guess it didn't matter what config I used for their purpose, but I do install my games onto them and there was no performance change with the games either. So I just decided to use AHCI. I bought the 1TB HDD to backup the RAID. I might try again, I don't know. I hate reinstalling.
Snapscape 2 years ago
After talking to Intel they said that RAID wouldn't benefit me at all for what I use my drives for because files larger than the stripe size will be read at exactly the same speed as on a non-RAID config and virtually all my files are large since I don't have an OS installed on the array. The only benefit the said that RAID could only give me is better space utilization. So unless I buy another drive for the OS, there's no point for me to use it simply for my storage drives.
Snapscape 2 years ago
what do you exactly mean fails? like it gets damaged? i mean cant you reformat the hard disks?
kidowner 2 years ago
On a RAID0 array, if one drive fails because of a defect or something, you lose everything on all the drives. Formatting won't do anything if the drive ceases to function. It relies completely on all the drives in the array to be without fault.
Snapscape 2 years ago
ok.. but does raid 0 increase the chance of fault? i backup my data whenever i need..
kidowner 2 years ago
Yes. The more drives you add, the higher your chances are of adding a faulty drive to the array. If you use a backup then that's fine. I use a backup as well but it's external because I had an experience where my two other internal storage drives lost their data while testing a program.
Snapscape 2 years ago
mm so if i put 2 in raid 0 ill be fine? by backup i dont mean that i do another hdd for backup.. i mean that i save data that i had downloaded and save them to pendrive and DVDs..
kidowner 2 years ago
That's basically what I do for my backups. I use a drive image for my Windows drive that I save to my backup drives. Two drives should be alright but it's recommended that they be the same size and model. You can use two different sized drives but on a RAID0 array the largest drive capacity will be reduced to the capacity of the smallest drive. So if you use a 200GB and an 80GB, the 200GB will become an 80GB.
Snapscape 2 years ago
yea yea i know that.. :) i plan on using 2 WD caviar black 500GB..
kidowner 2 years ago
@kidowner Well it does, if one drive fails, you loose all your data
Flashlabs 2 years ago
@Flashlabs already responded by someone else, thx anyway :)
kidowner 2 years ago
The reason I mentioned this again is because some details was left out in the Video. I also forgot to say, Stripe (raid0) twice the speed of the slowest drive, yes, also twice the size of the smallest drive, so don't Stripe a 500gb with a 160gb. You'll ens up with a 320gb hard drive.
dadude27 2 years ago
Raid 0 = 500g+500g=1000g, 2 x the speed of the slowest drive, but, if one drive fails, all data is lost ( half of EACH file was on the drive that failed)
Raid 1 = 500g+500g=500g, no speed increase, but, when one drive fails, all data is already mirrored to the second drive, data redundancy. You'll use a similar solution on your company server.
Raid 5 = 500g+500g+500g=1000g
Cheapest best of both worlds, not very reliable. Rebuilding array could take up to 2 days.
I'd recommend Raid 10.
Raid
dadude27 2 years ago
yes, you call it raid 10.
