I convinced a 20 year old friend to sit down and watch this movie telling him it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. At the end I turned around and asked what he thought. “The special effects were a bit crap” came the reply. I decided there was no point in trying to make him understand.
This seems to be the only posting I can find on Youtube anymore that had the Godzilla roar and all the original noises when the truck goes over the cliff! LOL
This is so awesome. I love great actions scenes. Thankyou so much for posting this. I have done a few action scenes myself on my channel if you want a look.
Sure i had this truck after me in Scotland a few years back!!! Thought of DUEL straight away! Was like i was TOWING IT or something!!! Classic film :)
Think NIKKI has maybe had the same thing happen to him now... shall tweet him!!!
I agree, I could watch this over and over..one of the best movies...Keeps you on edge and Dennis Weaver was awesome! I never heard a car sound that way when "she" was giving up. But who cares, it adds to the adrenaline! Thanks for posting this.....
Some movies you watch are around 120-135 minutes and you wish they could be around 90. Duel is around 90 but you wish it could maintain this for around 180 minutes! INTENSITY!
The driver didn't escaped, the system that was installed to keep the truck straight failed so at the last moment the stuntman got out. Still it could be a vain attempt to escape. source: imdb ( the Internet movie database )
Stuntman or actual trucker doing this to a guy, if my truck's about to go off a cliff to a fiery end, I'm gettin' out of it - or tryin'. So it works either way.
Show me a movie that has this level of intensity with only 1 main human character? That's what separates this movie from any other i've seen: the intensity level with so few characters. You can't take your eyes off it.
No he didn't. This movie was originally aired on television in November of 1971. It did so well that Universal had Steven Spielberg shoot some additional footage to increase the length of the movie to 90 minutes so it could be released theatrically outside the US. The original TV movie broadcast didn't have the sequences with the kids on the school bus and the scene with the truck trying to push the car on to the railroad tracks.
Oh, and to all the fans (myself included) debating whether the driver escaped just before the truck went over the cliff. Pause at 4:17, that is clearly the silhouette of the stuntman, although i don't think they wanted you to see that. As you're meant to be keeping your eyes on the truck cab and the car. But that still doesn't take anything, and i mean anything from this awesome movie. Some of Steven Spielberg's greatest work.
At 4:17 look directly above the truck cab and you will see a silhouette of the driver/stuntman, slowly getting up, and moving away. Watch it several times, you will see it. Admittedly the dust cloud makes it less clear.
It's quite hard to see, he appears for about 1 second only. Also notice that the door is wide open, a dead giveaway that he dived out the left hand side.
I don't know if anyone can help, but in my dvd version, it is missing the dinosaur-like roar, as the truck goes off the cliff. That really annoyed me cause i thought it was an awesome effect, as if the truck was a T-Rex devouring a velociraptor or something like that. If anyone knows why it isn't on the dvd please let me know, thanks.
I am also a huge fan of this movie, and I also have the DVD. If you want to get the original TV sound thack than you have to go to the main menu. Frome there you will click on "ENGLISH2.0 MONO (original sound thack) and then once you click on it the yellow line will go to the NUNE and then click on that. then you will be back at the menue. And just click play. You will also hear other different sounds threw out the movie. Hope this helps.
Thanks. I'll give that a try. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain how to acquire the original soundtrack. Thanks again for being so kind.
I myself had a bolex super 8 mm camera, however,i didnt know until tonight that Duel was shot in the super 8 format. i really thought that Steven shot in either arri 16 or a 35mm.

This is Steven Spielberg directing before he was famous. It might also be the first time a vehicle went over a cliff and didn't explode in a movie. As a trucker myself, I can tell you that there are actually some drivers out there psycho enough to do something like this.
I loved Saving Private Ryan too. But this movie Duel was so great because of it's simplicity. That's why i loved the Blair witch project, low budget, nothing really happens, but a great atmosphere.
the seen at 1:27 is a different truck than the one that acttually went over the sliff that truck after the movie sat for about thirty years as of 2007 then it was rebought and now is sometimes soon in hollywood callyfornia
i like this film because it shows how any regular person can have his life turned upside down at any time and make you realize what is important..he was worried about the hood of the car one minute and then was jumping all over it the next minute...love it still..one of my favorites...thanks for posting these scenes.
When you read the synoposis of this movie, it says a salesman driving a "rented car" across the desert ......... Has anyone seen ANY indication that he is driving a rental car? When he leaves his house, he drives out of his garage, and he has photos on his sunvisor, which doesnt
necessarily mean its his car, but I havnt ever seen anything to indicate that its a rental car either. He was also pretty fussy about the kids sitting on his hood, after he slid into a fence .
Three flicks creeped the shit outta me when I was a kid. Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, and Duel. My uncle was a trucker and he told me there were some, a small minority, that liked to harass motorists out on lonely stretches of highway. This flick is tense, suspenseful, and sometimes straight creepy the way the truck seemingly comes outta nowhere and then just stays right on his ass, even at nearly 100 MPH.
I remember watching them film this in front of my house when I was a kid, they went up and down the same mountain pass three times and made it look like it took forever. It actually only takes about 5 minutes. Shame they fucked up that bitchin old pete.
absolutely one of the most entertaining films of all time i love it what pisser the bloke in the red plymouth getting chased is good at building panic he just on his way to a job and has to have a go at the sicko truckie or die
You see the driver briefly (although not his face) when the truck overtakes the car at the beginning of the film. Also, you see his hand and his feet while he's stopped at the service station in Acton! The driver (Carey Loftin, who was quite a famous stuntman or, more specifically, stunt driver) was by all accounts quite a jolly fellow and lived to the ripe old age of 83, thanks, presumably, to his ability to jump out of trucks just before they fell off a cliff.
yeah it tells you who it is in the credits but you never see his face but bye the VIDEO not dvd and look real close at the cabin of the truck in the back of the box you can see him laughing and he looks like he is crazy
We all know that a remake of this classic film wouldn't come close to the original. Perhaps Spielberg would consider making a sequel to Duel, since the driver door on that truck was open before it went over the cliff. Hmmmmm....
Perhaps my favorite movie of all time! I could never get tired of watching this. This was when moviemaking was more simplistic, but a hell of a lot BETTER! I love that roaring sound the truck makes as it goes over the cliff! LOL
This was one of Steve Speilberg's first movies. This was made for TV. Speilberg had the class to show that car crashes don't end up in explosions and fire. Look up train crashes on youtube and you won't find one fire ball, just a lot of twisted metal. I watch MythBusters on the Discovery Channel to separate fact from fiction. Also, firing bullets into a gas tank won't make it explode or start the car on fire!
Of course. Gasoline doesn't explode like gun powder, or even catch fire at all from merely a collision, even a giant tanker. It catches fire like wood. And unless the bullets are incendiary or explosive, but otherwise correct. Shoot a gas, diesel or propane tank and even the tanks that feed flamethrowers and they'll simply leak.
I love it how the actor left the truck door open when he bailed out. But I have to say, they picked the perfect truck for this movie. It's just the "face" of it.
Didn't the Valiant during parts of the movie not shown here produce a V8 sound? So what is in it? a V8 or a Slant-Six? a 318 or a 258. Any Clues in the movie? isn't there a part where a mechanic looks under the hood recommending to change a hose?
esta pelicula la vi en 1973 y tenia 9 años, uffff! no sabia que era de spielberg, recuerdo que me impacto muchisimo, alguien sabe si se podrá conseguir en dvd en mexico?

I don't seem to be able to post links, so Google "10-4 Magazine" and "stlouisdumptrucks". First is an article about the duel trucks that claims three 351's were used. Second is site of the current owner of the surviving truck, claims two 281's and a 351 were used.
I got my info from first article, but now that I've seen the second page I believe it's correct since he goes into great detail on the specs of the surviving 281, I doubt he'd get the model wrong.
the quality is great!! thanks!

If he drove a 77 Vette. He would have lost him at the first of the Movie.

does anyone know what model that truck is?
farmboy120 4 years ago
A 1955 Peterbilt model 351, with a custom bumper made out of railroad track.

thanks
farmboy120 4 years ago
I thought it was a 289. I think the 351s had 2 driving axels, and this one does not.
cumminsfan 4 years ago
I don't seem to be able to post links, so Google "10-4 Magazine" and "stlouisdumptrucks". First is an article about the duel trucks that claims three 351's were used. Second is site of the current owner of the surviving truck, claims two 281's and a 351 were used.
I got my info from first article, but now that I've seen the second page I believe it's correct since he goes into great detail on the specs of the surviving 281, I doubt he'd get the model wrong.

this one has 2 driving axles.

No one ever sees the driver, and no, that car is no where NEAR the Dukes of Hazzard car. The Dukes had a Dodge Charger, this is a Plymouth.
