I lived in central USA for two decades - the scariest time of my life. The film GUMMO comes closest to the mindset of the area I have ever seen. It's like falling down the rabbit's hole, a cesspool of ignorance. religion, crime AND brain damage.

But there is a lot of anger in this film, as these people ARE smart enough to know they're in a deep hole. For those of us who realize this, this film is sad to watch. For others, it merely cements their prejudice/disgust. We all have the same potential.

People in the that particular area of the country have a habit of saying, "People are the same everywhere!", which, without doubt, they absolutely are not.

This scene shows so much about these two's relationship. It shows how lost they felt after the father's death. It shows how much she loves her son. It does more than just illustrate it, you can just feel it between the characters. She loves him so much, and he her. This and the bathtub scene get it just right I think. I've always been very impressed by the fact that such a tiny and simple scene can show so much.
