I lived in central USA for two decades - the scariest time of my life. The film GUMMO comes closest to the mindset of the area I have ever seen. It's like falling down the rabbit's hole, a cesspool of ignorance. religion, crime AND brain damage.
@t4705mb6 No. This is meant to be a hyper-exaggeration of the poor. You've just proven your own skewed perception of the poor, your hyper-exaggerated viewpoint. You see them as dirty and ignorant. But there is a lot of anger in this film, as these people ARE smart enough to know they're in a deep hole. For those of us who realize this, this film is sad to watch. For others, it merely cements their prejudice/disgust. We all have the same potential.
@grapebusted I was relating what I found in that area of the country when I lived there from 1982 to 2009. I expressed what I actually experienced. I am not only a world traveler but have resided in the US in ALL sections of the country. (I also have a background in psychology.)
People in the that particular area of the country have a habit of saying, "People are the same everywhere!", which, without doubt, they absolutely are not.
@t4705mb6 Well, while I'm impressed with your unrelated experiences, my opinion still stands. This film is hyper-exaggeration, an artistic rendering of a poor class of people. It's natural to want to "connect" to characters in films. However, in this one, we're repelled and drawn in at the same time, leaving us in this surreal neutrality. Anyhow, if we're tooting our horns here, I too, have a background in psychology. I also have an 8" penis if that matters. You're awfully old for such games...
@t4705mb6 Yes. Unrelated. I didn't ask for your resume. I don't care. No one cares. Your perception is skewed. Get objective. End of discussion. Frankly, you seem to be the one trolling. Now, leave me be.
@grapebusted the stuff you said is so true, about how they reralise theyre in the deep hole and that is why the film is sad.. also the stuff about being repelled and drawn in at the same time, leaving us in a surreal neutrality.. very true.. well put
Hard to believe his mom was the sweet young girl from "Days of Heaven." Linda Manz, why weren't you in more films? The length of your filmography is too small when compared to your talent.
The only strange thing about this clip for me, was the fact that he taped spoons and forks together to make weights. Other than that it was just a mum being silly.

ok fuck this movie,

Hahahaha, eww, that kid is...structured weirdly. I love thie part, though, his mom's neck thing was hilarious. Haha, I can't stop laughing every time I see it.
Lol the ones I know are. They seem to hoard canned pasta and bullets/ammo.I don't get the connection.I must be middle class,I hoard smoked salmon, sushi vinegar,National Geographics,Indy CD's.
That woman was cast because of a role she played in a 1978 movie called Days of Heaven. If you watch that movie you would get it. If you dont then shut your yap and watch Dancing with the stars.
This scene shows so much about these two's relationship. It shows how lost they felt after the father's death. It shows how much she loves her son. It does more than just illustrate it, you can just feel it between the characters. She loves him so much, and he her. This and the bathtub scene get it just right I think. I've always been very impressed by the fact that such a tiny and simple scene can show so much.
Real? How so. Have you seen lots of people like this? Doing this? This movie is no more "real" than Edward Scissorhands. Just made with less skill and vision.
it depends on what kind of person you are to understand the mother like it or not she's just a mom tryin to make her son laugh wile dealin with the death of a person she loved and lost (his father) she see's that he's drifting far away from him and she does'nt know what else to do but tell stories about his father talk about daily life and try to make her son laugh.....in the end gummo's mom is the most normal person in this movie
This movie is so disturbing that you have to keep watching. I don't get the point in this movie one bit but this is something I could really watch if I was baked
I can't really figure out what the point of this scene is. The movie is filled with racial and sexual connotations and i sort of feel like this is a play on the old black face sketches. fuckin movie is crazy though
It's about tension between a mother and her son. The best part is though that it doesn't just make the mother and son tense--it makes the AUDIENCE even MORE tense. That is, in my opinion, a very rare feat for a film to do.
