  • Love the footage starting at 2:31...Snow hitting the grownd and the crow calling in the background. Awesome stuff!

  • NS cut alot of the ex-NW and ex-SOU SD45s lifes to be very short by selling them for scrap prices in the 1980's. Therefore, I'm quite amazed that they not only kept the 6 ex-conrail SD-45's it inherited from the merger, but also invested the money for them to be rebuilt with 16cylinder 645's.

However the economics of keeping and maintaining older locomotives is more just now than it was in the 1980's

  • This was shot the day after my birthday last year!

  • Great catch thank you.

  • I saw an SD45-2 in BB like 3 weeks ago, My jaw dropped!!

  • wow! notch 8 is great, but that rs3l just topped it off. now if it was a solid conrail painted lash up that would make it soooo much better lol. anyway, great vid thumbs up and a fav

  • i'm in heaven watching this. i may have even commented on it before. but this is a great video

  • awesome catch what a sound combined with that sweet leslie!

  • Nice!!!!

  • That must be pretty rare to see SD45'S on 65J... usually you see the SD40-2'S

  • Well I was amazed to see two of the five they have out actually leading a unit train instead of a local in New Jersey.

  • i miss the EL scheme, it was badass

  • Sweet video, Zack!

  • Who would have thought.. SD40-2's became a possibility, and now the SD45-2's have done the same.. Just wow.. This is utterly outstanding. Nice to hear the true sound of an SD45-2 duo...

  • Well, these engines were downgraded to the 16-645, their original 20 cylinder engines were removed about 5 years ago.

  • Yes I know.. Even if they are using the same motor, I still look at it in the classic way of it being 45-2 duo sounds. ;)

  • I miss all the good stuff great video man

  • Awesome video! But what is that smell?!

  • I still can't believe this ACTUALLY happened. It one thing to have them tucked behind the catfish on 19G...its a COMPLETE OTHER thing having two of them hauling trash loads in 8.

  • Yeah Im so glad me and Eric caught this. It was pretty Badass.

  • THAT it was, just wished I could have been somewhere out there in the area to celebrate the LITERAL once-in-a-lifetime catch with you guys.

  • Good times, and that was an impressive throttle up. Won't soon forget that trip.

  • Definitely not. That was an awesome catch. We should have another trip soon, dude.

  • Very nice video, Zack!

  • Thank you, Im glad you liked it.

  • Great Catch, is that the original Erie horn?

  • I looked at the pictures from when these 6 were EL units, and it sure looks like it is the original. Although Im not 100% positive.

  • ok cool, this will be a good video to have in my favorites for modeling purposes. gotta program the right horn!

  • I must have been the only one who didn't shoot this. :-( Ah well, glad you and Eric were there to get it.

  • It was quite the catch...dont mean to rub that in your face lol.

  • that is THE awesome

  • Great vid, and I love the 2nd shot of them in the snow! Glad they were going slow, because you can get a better loook at them that way. Nice one Zach! 5* rate!

  • Thanks a lot Kenny, it wasnt just the sights of the units, it was the fact they were letting those 645s rip upgrade. The sound is just phenomenal.

  • I can imagine. I know when you're on the west slope out past Altoona the sound of those SD40-2's in notch 8 is awesome. But I have to be honest, those rebuilt SD40E's just don't sound as good.

  • Good catch, Zach-o!

  • Thanks, Kev-o!

  • Ah it was great seeing these two, even though the 3354 and 3343 went ahead of them in Altoona. I didnt care if it was dark. The sound was beautiful

  • I agree with you completely, the sound is something else.

  • WOW!!!!! Very nice catch!!! Well you Never Know With NS usually those things get designated to spot for awhile , so who knows :D

  • Well this was all due to a derailment NS had in Ohio that day. A whole bunch of the power had to get tied down on spot, so there was a lot missing down here where the intermodals would usually drop off the power.

  • Awesome catch. Excellent video*****

  • Thank you much.

  • Great catch man! Their sister unit ,NS #1701, is working Conrail South Jersey right now. Nothing like seeing and hearing one of those Ex-EL's in person! Thanks for posting this!

  • Yeah every time Ive seen these before, theyve been in tow on 19G, so I never was able to hear them. Im glad I caught this because this is unlikely to happen again. Theyre quite frequent in your parts and it seems NS likes to keep it that way.
