Nice bike! Could you like tell me where to get a brushless hub motor to convert my schwinn bike. Thanks. Oh I live in Illinois and am just wondering if you happen to know just how much power am I allowed so as not to go over what the law allows.
well, they make the hub motors in a bunch of sizes, your bike most likely has 700c, and ya, they have it. only thing you need to think about is how wide a wheel/hub the bike takes.
well with steel forks you can, and i have, but only do it if the motor is just a little bit wider the the forks hold, and if the biike is aluminum or carbon then you shouldn't be pulling them.
Lol, I want to do that... but it depends on the wheels, spokes are never standard on racers, there "should" be enough clearance for the hub.... but do check, get a specification and measure youself

There is absolutely a huge advantage! Voltage equals speed. Your top speed would increase by 48/36 = 8/6 = 4/3 times. So your top speed would increase by 33%!!!! Do it Do it!! ya!

So I guess you should always carry a switch blade knife so if Bessy decides to take you for the ride of your life you can cut her wires.

Nice e-bike ya got there! Lifepo4 batteries would help your distance and speed you can put more, they're small and light. I am going with 4 x 3.2v @ 200AH for mine. Since I only need 4 it won't be so expensive.

heck ya it goes up hills! :) quite a bit of torque with no controller. just an on/off switch. I have 14ah 48v sealed lead acid right now. range: about 16 miles with very little pedaling. But no one is that lazy! You've got to pedal some... To at least pretend that you are getting exercise. I just take it into my work and plug it in, though. Charges up pretty fast. An hour or so after each use of about 3-4 miles.
Not com, but ca. It's the $180 brushed crystalite motor. $180 gets you the motor already built into the front wheel. $150 for the rear wheel with the motor built in. The motor can handle 24v to about 72v. Maybe higher??? But with just an on/off switch and no controller, I wouldn't go any higher than 60v, unless you want the motor life to be shortened. Cheap and good!
Hi Paul,i want to add an extra motorized wheel to my standard e-bike,with just an on/off switch.But how do you wire it up?Is it just the red and black (pos.&neg.)wires?There seem to be a lot of other wires from the motor that usually go to the controller,like hall effect sensors,ect.Are these not needed without a controller?Advice please!
Hello! The on/off switch only works with brushed motors. Those motors only have 2 wires. One connects to battery PLUS, and the other to battery MINUS. Just stick an on/off switch in the middle of one of those wires, and there you go! I have mine like this:
Dang it! I removed your comment when I tried to hit reply! oops. OK, I used a metal on/off switch from Home Depot or Lowes. They worked fine. It was like $4. I think it was rated at 20 amps at 120v. Or, you could get a slightly larger on/off switch from an auto parts store that can handle like 50 amps. Those are like $8.
By the way, it can handle 48 volts no problem. That's what I've been running for the last 10 months, riding it daily. For a while I was using 60 volts.
I only have a front brake. I just give myself plenty of time. Usually I ride on the sidewalk. You are right about the controller. It's $65, plus $12 for the hand throttle. I have them, and tried them, but the power is WAY less than the on/off switch method. The acceleration is addicting.
In ontario, the legal limit is a 500 watt motor, that cannot exceed 32km/h

Unfortunately, it only works with a brushed DC motor to just have an on/off switch. The brushless controllers are more expensive, but there are no brushes to ever wear out.

heck ya it goes up hills! :) quite a bit of torque with no controller. just an on/off switch. I have 14ah 48v sealed lead acid right now. range: about 16 miles with very little pedaling. But no one is that lazy! You've got to pedal some... To at least pretend that you are getting exercise. I just take it into my work and plug it in, though. Charges up pretty fast. An hour or so after each use of about 3-4 miles.

Not com, but ca. It's the $180 brushed crystalite motor. $180 gets you the motor already built into the front wheel. $150 for the rear wheel with the motor built in. The motor can handle 24v to about 72v. Maybe higher??? But with just an on/off switch and no controller, I wouldn't go any higher than 60v, unless you want the motor life to be shortened. Cheap and good!
